soundsThe river Rhine is to the Netherlands what the Mississippi is to New Orleans. In these ‘low lands’- the delta of Western Europe- multiple streams of cultural influences have both come down the river and in from the sea. They flowed in from Northern, Eastern and Southern Europe; since the 17th century from its maritime links with Africa, Asia and the Americas. During the 20th century political and economic changes led to a new massive influx of migrants. This added legacy profoundly colours the contemporary Dutch music world. So expect to find more than music derived from its former colonies in Indonesia, Suriname and the Dutch Caribbean but also from the Balkans, Cape Verde, Latin America and the Mediterranean. In short, Dutch delta sounds.

Crossovers are the trademark of our current world music scene that also serve to foster innovations in jazz, classical and pop. Think of the sonic experiments of Boi Akih, rooted in Indonesian tradition, the oriental adventures of Arifa, the astonishing improvisations of Senegalese singer Mola Sylla, the reinvention of Surinamese music by Paramaribo born flutist Ronald Snijders. Or listen to the eclectic klezmer by the Amsterdam Klezmer Band, Carel Kraayenhof being hailed the new hero of tango nuevo and discover how anarchic punkers The Ex turn into Exthiopians, or the way Fernando Lameirinhas transplants fado on new land. Even ‘Mother maqam’, the fabulous Iraqi singer Farida Mohammad Ali, begins creating her own crossover while living in exile in The Netherlands. She calls it ‘dozza jazz’, an east-west hybrid.

ResearchEver since the 1980s a dynamic scene developed with a wide range of artists, festivals, labels and venues. In order to advance and promote Dutch world both domestically and abroad, World Music Forum NL was founded (2006). It commissioned exploratory research on the world music industry in the Netherlands. The results have been published in ‘A world of sounds & opportunities’. Download: www.worldmusicforum.nl/english/item/a-world-of-sounds-and-opportunites-world-music-in-the-netherlandsA brief overview of facts & figures about the Dutch music scene can be found on our website: www.worldmusicforum.nl/english

European World Music Monitor In 2014 World Music Forum NL took the initiative to set up a European World Music Monitor. Its aim is to create effective tools to facilitate the formulation of music policy and empower World Music on a European scale. In general terms, a monitoring system can easily be collected from public resources. Developments and trends become evident through an examination of data gathered over the years. In order to initiate a pilot programme for the European World Music Monitor several European partner countries (a.o. Germany, Hungary, Netherlands) will continue to explore possibilities at Babel Med 2016. Such issues as the research model, implementation and financing involved in the constitution of the monitor will be discussed on Saturday March 19th.More info can be found at www.worldmusicforum.nl/english

Ahaddaf QuartetWith roots in Morocco, Italy, Germany and Armenia the Ahaddaf Quartet discovered its musical route in The Netherlands. The alchemy of lute and double bass, intertwined with percussion and piano, became their unique trademark. On stage and CD (Nasim Al Andalous-2012, Spoken soul- 2014) the band creates an evocative blend of Arabic-Andalusian tradition with jazz and Latin influences. The result is a virtuoso rendezvous of catchy melodies, striking themes and enchanting solos.www.ahaddafquartet.com

13

Jungle by NightYoung, gifted and white. Beginning in 2010 this bunch of nine enthusiastic teenagers started turning Dutch music fans plus the rest of the world into afrobeat/ ethiojazz disciples, even impressing the likes of Tony Allen and Mulatu Astatke. JBN’s mix of sheer talent and stunning performances have made them festival favorites be it jazz, world, pop or dance both at home and abroad (France, Japan, North America, UK). They continue the notorious Dutch tradition of such other adventurous collectives as ICP and Willem Breuker Collectief.www.junglebynight.com

14

Kuenta i Tambú (KiT)Kuenta i Tambú translates to “Stories and Drums” from Papiamentu, the language spoken on the islands of Curaçao, Aruba and Bonaire (Dutch Antilles). KiT fuses its Afro-Caribbean heritage from Curaçao with European dance with verve. The result is a bouncy balance between ritual chanting and infectious tambú rhythms with electronic samples. Some call it global bass, others prefer tambutronic to mark this colorful explosion of energy fitted for every dancefloor. www.kuentaitambu.com

15

LuzazuLNomen est omen, LuzazuL sounds light and blue at the same time. They sparkle like a lighthouse fuelled by waves of duende and saudade. On their CD Canvas (2014) the Dutch/ Portuguese quintet fuses fado with flamenco spiced with subtle Latin and jazzy improvisations. The bluesy undertones of flamenco guitar, feathery percussion, electric bass and piano are highlighted by the mesmerizing voice of Magda Mendes. www.luzazul.nl

16

NO bluesFew bands are able to boast of their own musical style but NO blues can. Locked up in a studio five Dutch and Middle Eastern musicians invented a new sound. They baptized it ‘Arabicana’, a hybrid of Oriental taqsim and American folk and blues. In the past decade NO blues have refined their duels between ud and percussion with guitar and double bass from a novelty into a superior style. It has resulted in a strong statement of their ethos on their recent album Oh yeah habibi which builds a new bridge between East and West.www.noblues.nl

17

The Nordanians The Nordanians’ unusual line-up makes for characteristically unusual musical fireworks. Violist Oene van Geel, guitarist Mark Tuinstra and tabla virtuoso Niti Ranjan Biswas have joined creative forces resulting in a wonderfully infectious wave of improvisation. Their musical spectrum ranges from traditional Indian ragas via jazz and funk all the way to intimate chamber music. Their musical travels for the ear are a pleasure for audiences all over the world and a challenge for every critic:‘A three-headed monster with the casual light-footedness of a ballerina’; ‘A very logical sounding mix of Indian and western improvisation, tough funk sounds and electronic effects’; ‘Humorous country blues with scat and contemporary classical music with Nordic landscapes’; ‘The Nordanians made clear that serious music could also be fun’.www.nordanians.com

18

Rumbatá Beat BandRight from their start (1990) Rumbatá enjoyed considerable success on the international salsa scene due to their original approach of Latin American music injected with jazz and swing. The band members lived in The Netherlands, but came from all over the world. After a five years break bandleader Jaime Rodríguez returned (2014) with his Rumbatá Beat Band playing Latin mixed with contemporary pop and jazz influences. The line-up is formed by the core of Rumbatá, added with fresh young talent.www.jaimerodriguez.nl

19

TenTemPiésTenTemPiés is an international collective based in Amsterdam. Their danceable music is a powerful mix of Latin rock, reggae and ska with an Amsterdam twist: Damsko Mestizo! From their beginning (2008) the 8-piece band have built a strong live reputation, being compared to such acts as Manu Chao and La Pegatina. From Chilean descent Maurino Alarcón and his band write music which is inspired by political issues and social injustice worldwide, thus adding a deeper layer to their festive performances.
