Introduction

With 17 athletes (8 men and 9 women) the Dutch delegation for the 33rd European Indoor Championships is the largest since the 1998 tournament in Valencia, Spain. The team contains a reigning champion (Eelco Sintnicolaas, heptathlon), a reigning world indoor champion (Nadine Broersen, pentathlon), as well as two reigning European outdoor champions (Dafne Schippers and Sifan Hassan). The Dutch team has several experienced athletetes, with Gregory Sedoc participating for the 6th time (winning Gold in 2007 and Silver in 2009). But with five athletes still eligible to contest U23 Championships later this year in Tallinn, the Dutch Team also includes ample young talent. Holland has won 45 medals in 32 editions of these European Indoor Championships, 12 in the last 7 tournaments. All medalists can be found in this booklet, as well as other statistical information, athlete profiles, an interview with Sifan Hassan (below), and more.

A word with Sifan Hassan

It has been only 15 months since Sifan Hassan got her Dutch passport, but the 22-year old athlete has put it to exceptional use, scoring record after record as well as international titles and honours for the country that has embraced her. At her first Championship finally allowed to wear the orange vest, Sifan won the 2013 European U23 Cross Country title. Subsequently, last Summer, she won a Gold as well as a Silver at the European Championships in Zurich, plus the IAAF Continental Cup. As fast as her trophy case fills up, Sifan also slashes her times, with her 4:00.96 over 1500 meters leading the World indoor Rankings late February by more than two seconds. Question: You have improved across the board ever since you started formally competing at the relatively advanced age of 18. Are you at all surprised by how much you keep improving? Sifan: Yes, I am a little bit surprised that I still improve this much. I hope this will continue! Q: The past 15 months were amazing with the Cross Country title, the European Championships medals as well as the Continental Cup. Was there one race that stood out for you? Sifan: For me there is of course one race that stood out: my gold medal race at the European Championships. I won’t forget that 1500m.

Q: You win Cross Country races, but are best known from the track, now both indoor and outdoor. Do you prefer either of them, or perhaps even road racing? Sifan: I really like both cross as outdoor track. For me the 1500m is a great distance on the track, but I also love to cross! Q: You have ran amazing times over all distances from 800 to 5000 meters. Is there a distance that suits you best, and/or which one do you personally prefer? Sifan: My favorite distance is the 1500m. I cannot easily say why. Maybe because it is my best distance. I just feel good when I run the 1500m, it gives me a better feeling than another distance. The 5000m for me is a little bit too long

Page 6: Dutch Athletics Team - Atletiek.nl · Q: You win Cross Country races, but are best known from the track, now both indoor and outdoor. Do you prefer either of them, or perhaps even

- 6 -

Q: As a Dutch runner with Ethiopian roots, you have access to many strong running traditions. Is there a specific athlete you look up to, or consider an example? Sifan: My example is a Dutch athlete: Ellen van Langen. How she won as a Dutch athlete the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Barcelona (1992)… She did it in 1:55!! That is just amazing. I’m happy that I can work with her! Q: Can you describe, and indicate what you like about, your training situation with Honoré Hoedt?

Sifan: Every athlete does have favorite training exercises and parts that they don’t like. My favorite training with Honoré is in the winter when we are going to a sort of cross track behind Papendal. Then we are doing 6-8 minutes run on that cross track. That is awesome! Q: In Prague, as before and likely in the future, you can choose between multiple distances you qualify for. How do you make that choice – based on best chance, training situation, preference?

Sifan: For me it is important to win a gold medal in Prague. I will chose the distance which gives me the best chance on winning

that medal. For later tournaments I don’t know yet. 1500m is my main distance, but it also depends on how training is going and what I prefer. Q: What are your goals (times, championships) for later in 2015? Sifan: In Beijing I want to be on the podium for the 1500m. Also it would be really great if I run a personal best on the 1500m! (sub 3:57.00) Q: With the World Championships later this year and already looking ahead at the Olympics in Rio, will your focus be on the 1500 meters, the 5000 meters? Both? Sifan: My best feeling is with the 1500m. The 5000m is a little bit too long for my feeling. Therefore I will focus on the 1500m. Q: 2016 is also the year of the European Championships in Amsterdam. Are you looking forward to that? Sifan: Yes of course! It would be great for me to run a big tournament in my home country! And the best would be to give my country a medal at that tournament! GOOD LUCK in Prague!
