ARCHITECTURE & HISTORYDurrington House is Grade II* listed and is describedin the History of Essex, published in the mid 1700s,as a “Capital Mansion, build for Samuel Feake,Esq, a Director of the South Sea Company”. Thedate ‘1723’ is inscribed on the lead roof and the Househas clearly evolved over the centuries. It is probablethat Samuel Feake’s house was constructed on thebase of a Tudor property. The 18th century part is oftimber frame with brick infill, whereas the later 19thcentury addition is predominantly of traditional brickconstruction, under a slate and tile roof.

According to an entry in the British ListedBuildings Register, “an engraving opposite depicts thehouse in all essentials as now, including the bays, although shown with fewer glazing bars”. Thischange was made by the London architect AnthonyLloyd when the House was extensively modernised inthe 1960s.

The property exudes character and a sense ofhistory. A secret underground brick-arch passage runsfrom the front door. The detail etched into everyaspect of the House is most impressive and thetriple bay front elevation is of particular note. Thestriking central bay boasts a prominent porch withmodillioned pediment and has symmetrical flankingbays each with bay windows and double-hungVenetian sash windows. The majority of windowsfeature either pedimented heads or cornices and theHouse is adorned with an exterior modillionedcornice.

Durrington House has a romantic history and hasbeen occupied by several well-known bankingfamilies, including the Glyns, the Goschens and theHambros. It is most closely associated with the Glynfamily, co-founders of Williams & Glyn’s Bank (nowpart of Royal Bank of Scotland), a family oflongstanding wealth and renown in the area, whowere recorded as owning large tracts of land aroundSheering in the 19th century.

The British novelist and scriptwriter Elinor Glyn (néeSutherland), who pioneered mass-market women's"Erotic fiction" erotic fiction is believed to have livedthere at the turn of the 20th century and was

notorious for her invitation “to sin on a Tiger skin orerr on some other fur”. There are numerousreferences to Durrington House in her biography,“Elinor Glyn: A Life” by Antony Glyn which refers toElinor’s marriage to Clayton Glyn on the 27th April1892. After their honeymoon in Brighton, it is saidthey “returned to Durrington in triumph… At theend of the drive was the fine Palladian façade ofDurrington House, no mean threshold over whichto be carried”.

SUMMARYDurrington House comes to the market for the firsttime in over 50 years having been within the samefamily for two generations, during which time theproperty has been maintained to a very high standard.

The property is set in extensive private and secludedgrounds and comprises a substantial yet manageable10 bedroom country house with an excellent balanceof formal reception rooms and family rooms. Theancillary accommodation includes 4 self-containedcottages and a range of outbuildings containing anoffice, garaging, potting sheds, greenhouse andstores.

The gardens and grounds are of particular note andhave been lovingly tended by the current owners. Anumber of the outbuildings are currently used aspotting sheds and stores for the gardens which, coupled with the large greenhouse, provide support tosustain the wide range of formal and informalgardens.
