Southern Reunion a success once again in 2005 I was unable to attend the 30th. South-ern Reunion this year which was held onMarch 5th at the famous Registry Hotel inNaples, Florida. As usual the hotel providedexcellentT food and service plus the wellknown ambience. The enthusiastic groupof 132 Durfee grads and guests enjoyedreminiscing and, particularly, the new Triviaquestions! Each table was decorated in the30th theme and included beautiful center-pieces which were awarded to the personat each table who would soon be celebrat-ing a birthday. Attending this year were two formerDurfee faculty members, William Bradbury48, History Department and ArmandDallaire, Science and Physics for 30 years.Of interest, also, was that the group of at-tendees ranged from Sam Gourse 36 to

Susan Almeida 77. I am told that the com-mittee is hoping to find younger people totake over the helm and perhaps anotherarea of Florida to be considered. Its pos-sible a change of location would drawmore people and the current committee hasoffered to assist in the transition. At anyrate, the Reunion will go on and will con-tinue to be held the first Saturday or Sun-day in March. This small uncertainty is dueto the fact that it is at the height of thetourist season. The usual raffle and auction and otherdonations this year was very successful re-sulting in approximately $2,000. which willbe donated to the Scholarship Fund. In-cluded in some of the auction items were afun bottle of wine plus a signed cookbookfrom Emeril. In the past five years, the

Southern Reunion has donated over $10,000and this will total approximately $12,000 withthis years offering. Good Job! Joe McGrady 37 once more led thegroup in singing On the Old Fall RiverLine and the 30th Southern Reunion ofBMCDurfee graduates ended with GodBless America. I wish I could have at-tended, but, maybe next year. Thank you to this wonderful Florida Com-mittee. GOOD JOB!Lucille Roussell Hadley 36(Courtesy of Janice Phillips Fiedler49)

Cynthia (Class of 1970). Lucille returnedto the workplace again to supplement herfamily income and to put to use her manytalents. After two successful careers workingat United States Luggage and later South-eastern Massachusetts University, Lucilleretired in 1987. At last, freed from theconstraints of family and major financialresponsibility, she was able to continuemuch of the community work that has beeninterwoven throughout her life. Althoughthis life path sounds very ordinary, if onelooks at the decades of devotion to boththe community and to Durfee High School, what one sees is a model citizen and no-table member of the community. Her pastand ongoing activities include the some ofthe following:- Founding Member of the Reunion Com-mittee for the Class of 1936- Active Member of the Save the Bells:Committee for the Durfee High SchoolTower Bells- Active Member of the Save the B.M.C.Durfee High School Building Committee- Established, maintains and fundraises forthe Class of 1936 Scholarship Fund- Participant and Reporter of FloridaDurfee Reunions for 10 years- Active member of the B.M.C DurfeeAlumni Association- Maintains the Class mailing list for theCHIMES Newsletter- Choir member at Central CongregationalChurch, First Congregational Church andthe Congregational church in Stuart, Florida- Past Chairperson of the Missionary So-ciety at the First Congregational Church- Past Director of the Sunday School atthe First Congregational Church

- Member of the fundraising committeefor the Fall River Symphony Orchestra- Reliable friend, driver, visitor and errandrunner for many shut-in friends- Community Participant- letters to the edi-tor, voracious reader, communication withlocal, state and federal representatives andsenators sharing her views articulately andwith the historical perspective that 85 givesone- Active participant in the Fall River Sym-phony Society Executive Board- Past President of the American LegionAuxiliary- Post 228- Somerset, MAAs you can see, there are no degrees, busi-ness leadership positions, or military ser-vice. What there is is a lifetime of volun-teer service born of passion. Becausewhat makes a treasured member of theDurfee community cannot be definedsolely by money, power or fame. It is in-stead the ability to create change on anindividual level. To raise, love and inspirenot 3 daughters, but an entire neighbor-hood of children, to aid and comfort notjust dear friends, but all who come to herin need and to rise up in the world of so-cial barriers not alone, but instead as a quietselfless catalyst. She may have stayed behind, but a com-munity has risen on her shoulders. Rec-ognition and awards belong not only tothose who find success beyond the bor-ders of our community, but also those who, while remaining within its geographicalboundaries, give tirelessly in embellishingthe fabric of the Greater Durfee and FallRiver communities. Lucille has lived a successful inspira-tional life here in Fall River. She has in-spired both those who remain here andthose whose dreams take them beyond itsborders.

The members of the Durfee Bells Preserva-tion Society, Inc. are happy to report that onceagain, great strides have been made this pastyear in their effort to Save the Durfee Bells. Throughout the year, the company that waschosen to restore and refurbish the bells, MeeksWatson Company of Ohio, has kept the com-mittee members informed about the progressof the work being done on the bells. The com-pany has made a mold for the missing bell anda new bell has been designed and cast. All ten of the bells have been cleaned andtuned and their tops have been milled to acceptnew mounting hardware. Electrically operatedbell clappers have been procured, and a designfor the chime frame that will support the bellsin the tower has been approved. The companyhas sent photos of the refurbished bells to thecommittee and the bells look truly beautiful. Our decision to offer a Brick Pathway ofMemories that will lead to and around the pro-posed Bell Tower has been met with great en-thusiasm by Durfee alumni. Memorial bricksare available in two sizes and can be inscribedwith any name or saying that is meaningful andsignificant to the purchaser. A 4 x 8 brick canbe purchased for $100 and a larger 8 x 8brick can be purchased for $250. To date nearly200 of these beautiful bricks have been pur-chased. Please contact your Class Reunion Commit-tee and encourage them to purchase a Memo-rial Brick in honor of your class. Many classeshave already done so! The final and most difficult part of thecommittees work has been to approve a de-sign for the tower that will house the bells. Af-ter months of investigation and discussion, thecommittee has decided to recommend a belltower that will be approximately 30 feet talland will consist of two levels. The bottom levelwill be made of a combination of flame facegranite and half-inch thick glass. On the sec-ond level of the tower, the bells will hang fromthe chime frame and will be surrounded by adecorative fence for safety. If finances allow, a

red roof and a multi-faced clock will cap thetower. The committee has chosen a design that willbe reminiscent of the original Durfee BellTower, yet, because it will be on the grounds ofthe new, modern high school building, it mustfit in esthetically, and not clash with the archi-tecture of the new school. The proposed BellTower is expected to cost between $150,000and $200,000, including site preparation, de-pending on height and other options. The towerdesign is not only beautiful but also very func-tional. It is hoped that sales of Memorial Bricksand other planned fundraisers will help raisethe funds necessary to complete the Bell Tower. Last June, the committee was saddened bythe death of Dr. Ira Rex, who had been a found-ing member of the Save the Durfee Bells group. His enthusiasm and dedication to the projectwas greatly appreciated and he is sadly missed. At the Annual meeting in April, four newmembers joined the committee. They are: Rev-erend Shirley Andrews, 54, John Freeman, 52,William Keating, 58 and Leo Sirois, 67. We are extremely grateful to all of you whohave donated to the Durfee Bells project, andhopefully, with your continued support, ourdream of hearing the historic Durfee Bells ringagain in the very near future, will become areality! There is a special section in this issue of theDurfee Chimes for you to designate a contribu-tion to the Durfee Bells project. Please sendany thoughts or comments to: DBPS, P.O.
