Get ready for a new Golden Age.What a result. And what an opportunity to make changes for the better. I figure we’re about to see the dawn of a Golden Age in Townsville and the North Queensland region. Can you see it too? The point is there’s no reason why there shouldn’t be. All we have to do is take the opportunity now that it’s here and run with it. We’re all living right here, right now. Life’s short. Best enjoy it.

Apparently many GenXers don’t know where chicken strips come from. Most don’t realise they come from chickens. True. I saw a 30 second documentary on it the other night. It’s so incomprehensible to them that one of the fast food places have commissioned late teens to visit chicken farms as a community service. The doco showed them rounding up chooks, running through mud and herding one terrified chook into a shed. There’s no indication of how they convert them into strips but the story ended with these GenXers eating a big pile of deep fried chicken bits. And loving it. And each other. Next week they’re visiting a bank.

Ok, we all watch television, don’t we? Some people I know have become hooked on it. My Kitchen Rules that is. My wife not only tapes it but has to be home every night to watch it. Not

that we’re cooking any more than before. We just have a more critical approach to food and eating out now. Even my mother’s phone conversation (straight after the weather report) is about who’s going to win, who cooked what and who she dislikes the most (no offence Mum). But it’s all coming to an end and we’re looking to the TV guide for the next show to hook into. The Block looks like it could be it. That’s as well as Revenge, Luther (next series?), Q&A, Grand Design and the footy.

After living most of my life in Townsville I’ve really come to love rain. It’s the stuff that separates the really beautiful sunny days we have most of the time. And it makes the place clean and green. Our hearts go out to our unlucky neighbours who copped the destruction of the ‘mini’ tornado the other week. We hope everything gets back to normal for you as soon as possible. Till next month when we can talk about the new Mayor and City Council.

Every year DUO Magazine holds a competition where 12 local girls are chosen to grace the magazine’s cover for a month of the year. This month we introduce you to:

JOYCE ZENGJoyce, 28, works as an operating theatre nurse at both the Mater and Townsville hospitals. She and husband Raymond are both huge fans of the Townsville Crocs and Formula 1 racing and went to Melbourne earlier this year to watch the Australian Grand Prix. When Joyce has spare time, she loves taking their two gorgeous border collies for a walk, run or trek up the hill.

HAIRTOUCH OF UTOPIAIt was really nice to work with someone with short hair. Joyce’s hair cut is quite sharp and we wanted to emphasise that, straightening her hair using Osis ‘Flatliner’ and Cloud Nine straightening irons. To add texture to the style, we used Osis ‘Messup’ to give it that point of difference. We finished the style with a holding hairspray called Osis ‘Elastic’.

MAKEUPTOUCH OF UTOPIAWe started the base with Youngblood Mineral Primer, followed by Sun Kissed Liquid Mineral Foundation, sealing and finishing it with Hi-Definition Mineral Powder in ‘Warmth’. Using the blackest black Youngblood eyeliner, we created a heavy line on the upper lid; applied Moonstone Mineral Eyeshadow under the brow to create height, and ‘Blossom’ Mineral Blush on the eyelids and cheeks to produce that fresh pink glow. We finished the eyes with Blackout Mineral Mascara and the lips were filled with Youngblood ‘Sequin’ Lip Pencil, followed by ‘Vivid’ Lipstick.

eneral manager of The Venue, Tim Pellegrino, is excited. He’s been working on a concept close to his

heart − fly Australia’s premier music artists to Townsville, show them our town, then showcase their latest work in an intimate performance to a strictly limited audience. The idea is now about to come to fruition, with the Intimate Series kicking off June 1, headlining none other than Tim Freedman of The Whitlams fame.“With Tim, I think we’ve picked the strongest singer/songwriter in Australia at the moment to launch the Intimate Series,” Tim says.“Timmy has won Arias and is well known across Australia for his time with The Whitlams. He’s been off the road for a couple of years, but released one of his own albums late last year. He’d sort of gone into hibernation and now he’s coming out for a short tour.”

And he’s stepping out in style. Tim will play to an exclusive audience of 250 people in an intimate setting at The Venue. Dinner and show tickets are now available to 150 guests for $79 (front row still available for $89 per person, tables of eight), with dinner starting at 7pm. The remaining 100 tickets are balcony view ($39) from 8pm.A premium smorgasbord will be on offer with full table service and pay-as-you-go drinks. When guests arrive they’ll find a fruit or antipasto platter to share on the table.

“Tables can be booked for two, four, six or eight, so you can enjoy the company of your friends,” Tim says.

“Just call me and I’ll arrange everything for you.”And you know the meal will be good because Tim is also The Venue’s chef and he’s owned restaurants before.Tim says the Intimate Series concept is new to Townsville in that

it offers the audience a chance to unwind and really experience the artist’s performance in comfort and style.

“We could have had it in a normal show format but we wanted to make it more desirable, and really keep it to that limited room number at an affordable price,” Tim says.

“That way you’re not rubbing shoulders with 1000 other people straining for a view. The Intimate Series is for a select adult audience – not general admission.”Tim says bringing Australia’s top musical talent to The Venue is not just a win for them, but also a win for Townsville.“We’re not only promoting ourselves, we’re promoting Townsville at the same time,” he says.

“It’s a lot easier for an individual artist to fly up for an intimate performance than it is for them to tour with band members, managers, stage crew… It’s a lot

more affordable – they just have to be there on the day.”

“What we’re then hoping is they’ll have enjoyed Townsville so much, they’ll want to come back with everyone for a tour later.”When pressed to reveal which other artists will feature in the Intimate Series over coming months, Tim wasn’t giving anything away… but there are some big names on the cards. And it’s envisaged Intimate Series guests will be hooked after the first show and want to book ahead for others.

To secure your place now, call Tim Pellergrino, on 0418 748 143 and know what’s coming up at www.thevenuetownsville.com.au

DUO Magazine greatly appreciates the support of our promotion partners:

A big THANK YOU to the 320 gorgeous local ladies who entered the 2012 Smile Dental 12 Faces of DUO promotion this year. Once again the judges had a hard time choosing our 24 finalists. Then the voting started wth a huge rush. There were plenty of Facebook

pages created and many friends and relatives encouraged to vote. Altogether, we received over 7000 individual votes online! A fantastic response that we’re delighted with. Our Winners Announcement High Tea was an afternoon of glamour and cupcakes. We’re

sure you’ll agree, the 12 winners chosen are not only beautiful but are really lovely people as well. All the team here at DUO Magazine are revved up for the new series of covers so the question is: Who will be the first to appear on the cover of our May edition?

horoscope

If you’re interested in an in-depth astrology profile prepared by Tanya Obreza, visit www.tanyaobreza.com.

There’s a fair bit of tension in the air, which you can’t help but sense. While your level head usually keeps you out of trouble, less pragmatic minds seem determined to pursue a collision course. Don’t buy into trouble just because others are deliberately egging you on. You’re stronger than that. And others know it.

Capricorn 22 DECEMBER – 19 JANUARY

A friend may admit to letting fear hold them back, which makes you realise that you’re probably doing the same. But our greatest fears often become our best triumphs. Perhaps if you join forces, double strength will eventuate into double rewards. Either way, you could move mountains. Just believe it.

Taurus21 APRIL – 20 MAY

You deserve congratulations. Despite difficulties, important personal goals should soon be reached. If you’re trying to lose weight, boredom could be your worst enemy – so avoid snack attacks by keeping on the go. Change bad eating habits too, and exercise more. At work, you get a chance to follow your dreams – and perhaps even your heart.

Pisces 19 FEBRUARY – 20 MARCH

Many Gemini’s are now asked to put more thought into joint partnership matters – whether business or personal – as you’ll be expected to help out at a joint event that might mean spending some time away. Those who have been waiting for permission to start a new project should expect good news. Finances also improve.

Gemini21 MAY – 21 JUNE

It’s hard to ignore someone who’s acting in a hurtful or destructive way. But there’s no need to stay silent. Don’t become defensive or make a scene – simply state your case. If the individual in question refuses to cooperate, call in a third party. Friends will offer you unconditional support, even if family doesn’t.

Virgo 23 AUGUST – 22 SEPTEMBER

Being different sometimes involves taking risks. And the planets now double dare you. This month, romance – possibly with someone older, may be formed as a direct result of work or travel. And if you feel inclined to mix business with pleasure, the merger should prove mutually pleasing. Financially and emotionally.

Libra 23 SEPTEMBER – 22 OCTOBER

Nobody knows it all, but we all know something. Sometimes you underestimate just how experienced you are until you meet people totally new to the game. This month could find you bestowing a wealth of welcome advice. Great for your self-confidence as well as someone else’s learning curve. Everyone benefits.

Sagittarius 22 NOVEMBER – 21 DECEMBER

Want your own personal profile?

One particular phase of your life is coming to an end and you’re trading what’s worn-out for something far more exciting. Romantically, you’re on hot new stamping ground. Financially, you’re not. While the wolf might isn’t exactly at the door, the bills soon will be – so budget

accordingly. If money must be spent on travel – do so wisely.

Look after your health, Cancer. Sure, you can party – but sometimes moderation is a good thing. Thankfully, the cosmos doesn’t apply the same rules to romance. Here, you can be as playful as you wish. Just don’t place your eggs in one over-idealised basket. Recognise affairs that don’t stand a chance. The illicit kind especially.

Cancer22 JUNE – 22 JULY

Early April places optimism on hold. Get rich quick schemes are especially worth avoiding, with the cosmos ready to deal out harsh lessons in financial management. Money matters need to be handled with caution and integrity. The same applies to past lovers. A potential rival could spark jealousy or anger. Someone’s feeling insecure.

Leo23 JULY – 22 AUGUST

Aquarians live off adrenaline, always impatient to meet the next challenge. No one can motivate others like you, but burnout is a common affliction. Something to bear in mind for now. This could be a powerful month, but only if you stick to some basic rules. Stay grounded and healthy. The same applies to financial matters.

Aquarius 20 JANUARY – 18 FEBRUARY

April seems keen to introduce someone of a similar persuasion. What’s more, you needn’t go far. Your soul mate may be very close by. Downside: you’ve probably less purchasing power than usual. If your bank balance is already toppling towards humiliation, settle for less spending. There are plenty of good times to be had for free.

HAVING ONE BABY IS LIFE-CHANGING in itself, but try doubling or trebling that. Mums all over Townsville have been drawn together by their twins and triplets, meeting regularly for morning teas with the Townsville and District Multiple Birth Association. But some mothers (and fathers) have extended their friendships beyond the club’s social schedule, gathering for play dates, barbecues and family trips away. “I joined the Townsville Multiples in 2005 when I was pregnant with my twin boys,” school teacher Patrice Evans says, who has become good friends with Kylie Killer, Michelle Johnston (both pictured) and other mums in the group. “It was out of a combination of fear (‘what am I in for?’) and the fact we’d not long moved to town – I wanted to get to know as many people as possible to establish a support network. I’ve made some wonderful friends. One family in particular has become particularly close – it helps that our husbands get along famously!” With her boys born at 29 weeks, Patrice says she battled with post natal depression, so having allies to vent to over coffee – who knew exactly what she was going through – was invaluable. As a mother to 11-month-old twin boys, her friend Michelle agrees; especially as she has limited family in town and a husband who works away. “It’s a support network, but it’s now extended to friendships outside the group,” Michelle says, who regularly goes to cafés, shops, parks and the pool with the mums. “I didn’t want to stay at home all the time and needed contact with adults to build those relationships, so I’m very lucky to have this group of women.”

Lyn Hastings, Howard Tuohy, Cheryl Keys and Cecily Jones

CECILY JONES, LYN HASTINGS, CHERYL KEYS AND HOWARD TUOHY got a bit more than they bargained for when they joined the Townsville Photography Club – the keen snappers becoming travelling buddies who tour around the country capturing stunning scenes. The small group is just a handful of the 79-strong membership –

people from all walks of life who have come together due to their love of photography and desire to learn, but also bond with like-minded folk. “I joined the club because I wanted to meet some new people,” Howard tells, “but my love of photography grew and now we’ve been to places I never would have seen.”

Some of their adventures have taken them to Lawn Hill near the border of the Northern Territory, Carnarvon Gorge in Queensland, and a two-week New South

Wales odyssey; with each of the trips full of laughs and good-natured jokes. “Like the time Howard pretended he’d been electrocuted when we were madly trying to charge all our camera and phone batteries on the one circuit board,” Cecily smiles. “Or when every time I decided to take a photo Lyn bent over, resulting in a series of caboose shots. We call it adventure before dementia… we love it and enjoy our friendship.” While the pals are mainly retired (except for Howard, begrudgingly so), the diverse members of the club vary from thirties to mid seventies and have included anyone from forensic scenes of crime officers to bird watchers. “The great thing about being in a club is that you have a shared interest from the start and we’re all there to learn from each other,” Lyn says. “We’ve certainly seen some great sights and had a lot of fun doing it.”

WHEN SID ELLIS JOINED THE ARCADIAN BAY SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB in 1946 it was just him and 11 mates. Now with 360 in its ranks, the 90-year-old has forged such close bonds that fellow life member, Lee (Leroy) Jones, has become his full time carer. While Sid can no longer make it to Magnetic Island for the regular trips to Arcadia that are tradition amongst his comrades Leroy (37-year member) Wayne Giudes (30-year member) and Brad Seawright (45-year member and current president); the younger blokes steadfastly maintain their ritual, attributing their close bonds to the spirit of the club. “I think it’s because we’re working towards a common goal – to keep the beaches safe – whether it’s stingers, crocs or cyclones – you’re not competing against each other in that area,” Wayne tells, who originally got involved with the iconic organisation in the rugby union off-season to row, and maintains a multi-decade debate with past champion swimmer Brad over the merits of the activities (“why get wet when you can row a boat?” Wayne stirs). Plus, of course, there are the ample beers they’ve bonded over. “In the old days when the boat used to leave from Arcadia, we would always go home via the Arcadia Hotel and grab a couple of beers to lubricate our voices,” Wayne reveals. “We were actually the Arcadia Choir (laughs) and there were many songs, one being Arcadia the Best Bay of All. Also there were classics like Singing in the Rain… now this choir performed for free the whole way home… in those days we never used to measure distance in time – it was in beers, like a six-pack. This was of course after competing and swimming. The fun was always after the serious stuff!” But while they’ve now swapped their physical contributions for more fundraising and admin-style roles, the lifelong mates still live and breathe the club. “We can’t imagine not being members – it’s just one of those things that’s become part of our lives,” Brads states.

IT WAS A CLASS HOSTED BY 2010 World 24-Hour Elite Female Mountain Biking Champion Jessica Douglas that reintroduced Kelly Bolger to the sport, and acquainted her with a whole new group of friends. The mother-of-three hadn’t sat in the saddle for years, but meeting the fun group of girls (cum personal cheer squad) she has since befriended has ignited her passion to hit the tracks. “The camaraderie is the best aspect,” Kelly explains. “We’re all at the same level so, whether we’re just trying to master a skill without getting puffed, or we’re passing each other up a hill, we all

encourage each other and – combined with our determination – we know we’ll get better!” Kelly, Leonie Jones and Sandra Callanan (all pictured) also stay in regular contact on Facebook where they support each other in their weight loss and fitness goals, and recently most of them went on a girlie road trip to Tinaroo. This year the ladies will do the ‘recreational’ Paluma Push together in July:

45km of pedalling through uneven and muddy bush terrain. “I did it last year with another friend in the club and we cheered each other on the whole way,” Sandra says. “I came second last, but was just glad to finish and not be carried out of there! Being a stay-at-home mum, if I didn’t get involved in the club I never would have met Kelly and Leonie… it’s good

to get out and do something you’d never think you’d do and meet people who enrich your life.” Leonie, who started off by using her partner’s gear until she was convinced the sport was for her, adds: “Mountain biking has certainly brought us together and we’re

setting goals and doing things we never could have done alone!”

The glitter of the gorgeous gems matches the star power associated with luxury jewellery house Jan Logan.

Faces of its past campaigns have included Teresa Palmer, Rose Byrne, Rachael Taylor and Emma Lung. The Aussie brand has a knack for unearthing fresh talent before they take off into the stratosphere. The latest is Elizabeth Debicki, a Paris-born, Melbourne-raised actress, who lit up the screens in Stephan Elliott’s A Few Best Men and will next star in Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby alongside Leonardo DiCaprio – a fresh jewel of the Australian screen.

Managing director – and Jan’s son – Angus Logan says support for local talent is vital for evolution in the Australian film industry. “We enjoy nurturing young actresses in the early stages of their career and to create the stepping stone they need in a highly competitive industry … [And] Elizabeth’s ethereal and bright nature reflects the spirit of our design traditions.”

Aptly, the new collection is named Gatsby, like the hedonistic ‘20s film Elizabeth stars in. Of the theme, Angus says, “The 1920s was the first decade that women truly asserted their independence and with this came classic fashion styles that will never die. Many of the styles of this decade were born from the underground jazz scene.”

Jewellery queen Jan herself says the latest collection takes “inspiration from the 1920s Deco era [in] the natural form of beautiful Australian South sea pearls. Yellow and rose gold returns and colourful gemstones are [also] important.”

It was Jan’s start in Narrabri in north-western New South Wales, which first sparked her passion for the jewellery trade, before she made the move to Sydney in 1986. Working as a promotions officer for the Narrabri Chamber of Commerce was where her marketing side came out – and the best thing of all was that the president of the chamber happened to be the main jeweller in town. “I started playing with the jewellery and suggesting design ideas, and he ended up offering me a 20 per cent partnership,” Jan says.

Over the past 20 years, that passion has evolved into an international brand with stars like Jennifer Lopez, Miranda Kerr, Melissa George and Dannii Minogue having been snapped in her designs and Jan contributing pieces to the parades of top Australian fashion designers like Collette Dinnigan and Akira Isogawa. Jan’s baubles have also shone on the silver screen in films like Any Questions for Ben?, The Tender Hook, and The Starter Wife starring Debra Messing.

Since her small town beginnings, Jan has travelled far and wide. “The most interesting and stimulating gem-hunting and jewellery trip I have been on was to Jaipur in Rajasthan, India,” Jan enthuses. “India is a mesmerising country, which captures the imagination – it is a land of contrasts. Rajasthan is the home to India’s best jewellers, gem-cutters and merchants.”

Her own favourite pieces in her jewellery collection include “my diamond line bracelet, with the diamond Quattro accents, and my diamond Swanson ring, which has sentimental value.” As for what classic pieces every woman should aspire to own? Jan says: “The classic pieces every woman should have in her jewellery box are a pair of diamond stud or hoop earrings, a pair of South Sea Pearl earrings such as from our Heidi range. Aim for a diamond dress ring such as our Rachael ring, a lovely diamond bracelet and a casual, semi-precious, coloured stone cocktail ring, such as those from our Tango range… Jewellery not only makes a splendid accessory but also serves as a keepsake that never ceases to bring back memories.”

Jan Logan’s 2012 collection is now in-store in Double Bay, David Jones Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Hong Kong and online at janlogan.com.

ost of us know at least one woman who invokes style envy whenever we see her. Whether she’s dropping the kids to school,

cruising the supermarket aisles or heading out to lunch with girlfriends, she is styled from head to toe. Many of us aspire to be that woman, and some of us even are.

One woman who possesses such seemingly effortless elegance and innate fashion sense is Melbourne-based fashionista, former fashion forecaster and now fashion designer, Jane Ramsay. And according to Jane, who is also a Townsville native and former Pimlico High student, the key to timeless style is a wardrobe with solid foundations.

“I admit I’m a fashionista – I’ve spent my life following fashion and forecasting what looks will be on-trend next season,” tells Jane, who also admits she frequently receives comments on whatever she wears. “My style has always been my own edit, my own take on fashion,” reveals Jane. “Because of my experience as a fashion forecaster, I know which items, shapes and colours are constant, and use these to build on to look timeless but stay current.”While Jane’s career spans all seams of the

fashion industry, her focus was primarily on fashion forecasting. In ’93, Jane and her then-boyfriend, now-husband, relocated to the US and Jane “fell” into forecasting while living in Los Angeles. “There weren’t many people forecasting fashion trends at that time,” recalls Jane, who researched fashion trends and how

upcoming looks would translate. “I really thought I had made it!” she laughs. “I was being paid by companies to fly around the world, stay in beautiful hotels, shop at the best stores and buy the picks of the collections to bring back to Australia.” Meanwhile, Jane’s dreams of designing were pushed aside. “It was easy for Australian companies in the ‘90s to be on trend, because we’re always a season behind. All they had to do was reproduce designs seen in the northern hemisphere. But this process also made me believe that creating my own collection was just a dream… that there was no room for genuine design in Australia.”

Years later and after raising her four children, Jane found herself ready to return to work. “I realised I had this opportunity to return to design,

and put forward my own perspective. I’m always conscious of fashion, I’m always dressed and I’m always styled, even if all I’m doing is running kids around or I’m just wearing a pair of jeans and a luxury casual T-shirt.” In fact, Jane’s never-ending “quest for the perfect tee” was one of her motivations for the collection. “I’m a believer in the essentials,” continues Jane.

“Every wardrobe needs two pairs of jeans – one super sexy pair of skinnies for when you want to rock it, and one slightly more casual pair for just hanging out – and a casual tee that fits just right,” explains Jane. “Whenever I thought I’d found the perfect tee, ‘the one,’ I would be devastated to find the fabric would lose its shape or its softness after the first wash.”

Late last month, Jane revealed her first collection to Townsville, with an intimate viewing at the Dance North studio. Along with jeans and luxury casual tees, the collection includes silk cargo pants, printed maxi skirts, furs and leather jackets. “These are timeless items which will carry from season to season, and will each work back with future collections to stay current,” explains Jane.

Jane’s website, janeramsay.com, launched earlier this year, is the sole purchase point for the collection, following a promising US launch late 2011 and amidst the current Australian launch. With increasing exposure and a growing global client base, this foundation collection is laying a solid foundation for many more.

f you’re in need of a luxurious escape with all the options a great city can offer, but don’t have the time to travel to Paris, New York or Dubai? The Emporium Hotel is a funky oasis situated in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley and took me by surprise with its cool trendy design

and culture of relaxed but impeccable service. My Emporium experience started with a chance booking on wotif.com for a one-night stopover. I loved it so much I stayed for the week.

The moment I handed the keys of my car to the super friendly concierge and entered the foyer I knew I was in for a treat. The furnishings are extravagant and opulent yet modern and sophisticated and there is nothing stuffy about The Emporium, unlike some other high-end hotels. The room, a king suite, included kitchenette that came complete with dishwasher, washer/dryer, a spa for two and a dynasty bed that delivers nothing but exquisite sleep. While this all sounds fairly typical, it’s the attention to detail that lifts this room well above its peers. Self closing drawers, Bose sound system that you can actually turn up and not annoy your neighbors, bath salts that get refilled every morning, pillows and bottled water by the bed every night, quality wine and champagne glasses provided in your room and the pillow selection reads like a exotic wine selection – feather down, Swedish memory, Satin beauty soft foam, Slimline, Pregnancy, Upper Body, latex contour for allergies and ladies…there was even a pillow called “snore no more”.

Centrally located just outside the hustle and bustle of Brisbane’s CBD and Elizabeth Street but with all the perks of city life within walking distance. No need to drive or book a cab to enjoy an array of great dining options. The Hotel is right amidst “the” place to go for gourmet meals. You can dine on exquisite Moroccan and Middle Eastern fare or try out the one of the wicked desserts at the specialist coffee and dessert restaurants. I confess I enjoyed a few too many glasses of wine on occasions, but a few small steps and I arrived safely back in my room.

If you are like me and enjoy a great breakfast, then go see Ben & Ryan at Symposium Café on Commercial road, about a 2 min walk. On the more energetic days a 20 min walk had me alongside the Brisbane

River where I would inevitably end up at Brio Expresso and Juice on Vernon Terrace. With a breakfast menu to die for and Genovese coffee of which I am a dedicated fan of, it is well worth the walk from the hotel. Mind you, there is plenty of parking if you would prefer to drive and save your energy for a river walk.

The Emporium has its own amazing bar and whilst it was easy to come back to night after night, I did manage to pull myself away and venture into the valley precinct. Nightlife in the valley area is incredibly varied. An unexpected highlight for me was going to a unique outdoor bar called “alloneword” in Brunswick Street on a Wednesday night for the local musicians jam session. Another treat was going to the iconic Waterloo Hotel, which had an amazing refurbishment, awesome bar with intimate nooks and melt in your mouth salt and pepper calamari. The best thing about the valley is you can casually explore on foot any day of the week and find something to eat, drink or watch.

Of course there is plenty of great shopping in Brisbane, but this week for me was all about relaxing and enjoying some new experiences.

Returning to the hotel, I would walk under the date palms, past the fresh flowers and was always welcomed back by the staff as if I were part of the family. If I needed a mobile charger for my phone, something brought up out of my car or freshly cut limes and ice for my drinks, no request was ever done without willingness.

For my final night at The Emporium I ventured up to the roof top lap pool, with a collection of olives, dips and meats I sourced from the James Street Market earlier that day. Stunning views of Brisbane light up the night sky and with the glow of the lap pools soft lights, I sunk into a comfortable deck chair, sipped my champagne and reflected on the week that was, The Emporium!

After checking out and going for one last coffee, the valet collected my car, neatly packed my bags inside and left bottles of water in all the drink holders for the drive ahead. I left The Emporium, relaxed, revived and ready to take on my next adventure. You know its good when you book for one night and end up staying for the week.

Sleep disorders can have more far-reaching health consequences than morning crankiness and poor memory.

LONG DAYS AND HARD NIGHTS

About 1.5 million Australian adults – 9 per cent of the adult population – now suffer from sleep disorders, according to a report released in February by the Sleep Health Foundation. The report ‘Reawakening the Nation’ reveals sleep disorders cost the Australian economy more than $5.1 billion a year in healthcare costs. According to this report, the problem lies in the widespread prevalence of undiagnosed and untreated cases of sleep disorders. A high percentage of middle aged women and men with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) have not been clinically diagnosed.

OSA falls under the umbrella of sleep disordered breathing (SDB). SDB includes snoring and upper airway resistance syndrome. Snoring is the mildest form of SDB affecting 40 per cent of the adult population, but it can be a (very vocal) precursor for the onset of OSA.

OSA is a complete cessation of breathing during sleep for at least 10 seconds. It affects primarily those aged 40 to 60 and is more prevalent in males than females. If left untreated (which most cases are), the severity

of the condition worsens. During an episode of OSA the entire upper airway is blocked causing airflow to stop. The lack of oxygen flow disrupts sleep patterns causing repeated awakenings as the person makes every effort to breathe while they are suffocating in their own bed.

Clinical signs and symptoms include intermittent snoring, excessive daytime sleepiness, general lethargy, gasping or choking causing repeated awakenings, waking up unrefreshed, poor memory, irritability, personality changes and morning headaches.

The concern I have for so many undiagnosed cases is the cardiovascular co-morbidities associated with the condition. Research suggests 57 per cent of OSA patients have systemic hypertension (high blood pressure), 25 per cent have ischemic heart disease, 17 per cent have coronary heart disease and 7 per cent have experienced a stroke. As dental clinicians, we are in a unique position to screen patients for OSA and to refer to a sleep physician for definitive diagnosis.

Our screening should include a thorough initial examination, including an Epworth sleep study. I believe we should have an understanding of the risk factors for OSA including obesity, male gender predominance, alcohol consumption, use of sedatives, and smoking. Our dental registration does not allow diagnosis of OSA and, hence, a referral to a sleep physician for an overnight sleep study (polysomnography, or PSG) is the absolute requirement that your dentist should provide.

Treatment focuses around the results of the PSG, along with identification of what level the obstruction is – nasopharyngeal, root of tongue or an oropharyngeal obstruction.

The severity of the OSA – be it mild, moderate or severe – will dictate whether continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), oral appliance therapy (OAT) or surgery is required, or whether it should be a combination of both.

What is clear is the condition is under-diagnosed with potential for serious health consequences. If think you have a problem please consult with your dentist.

manufacturers are able to drastically reduce the size of these components without sacrificing the sound quality. While these devices are around the size of a pea, the computer chip in them makes more calculations per second than a standard laptop! There are now three manufacturers producing these products and, by the end of this year, I anticipate all manufactures will be onboard.

In order to create these devices, a very deep canal impression of the patient’s ear needs to be made. This requires a paste to be inserted deep into the ear canal, which sets as rubber and is sent south to be made into the hearing aid. There are a few problems with this. Firstly, the clinician needs to be very experienced and confident with placement of the block that prevents the paste from going in too far, and also the measurement and placement of the paste – any error could mean hitting the ear drum and causing discomfort or difficulty removing the impression. Secondly, once the impression leaves the clinic, we have no control over what climatic conditions the impression is exposed to. Extreme temperature changes can cause the impression to expand or contract and

– consequently – the fit of the hearing aid may be very poor.

I’ve been informed that a computerised digital impression device will be launched at this year’s AAA, which requires no paste intrusion in the ear canal. The device has a special membrane that’s inserted and fills with an aqueous solution. The membrane expands and forms exactly the shape of the ear canal, and then digital sensors in the membrane record the shape. The fluid is drained out without any discomfort and the digital impression data is emailed to the hearing aid manufacturer without any risk of the shape of the impression changing.

I look forward to reporting back on the exciting new features and functions that we can expect in 2013 as hearing aid technologies continue to rapidly advance.

As I write this, I’m preparing to travel to the United States to attend the holy grail of audiology – the annual conference of the American Academy of Audiology, or better known as the AAA. It’s at this event that the world’s latest audiological research and products are launched and reviewed by their peers. Generally, products launched at the AAA take approximately six to 12 months before they are released in Australia.

Some of last year’s innovations have now been launched at home. One of the biggest developments in hearing aid technology that’s available now in Australia is the deep canal ‘Invisible in the Ear’ (IIC) style of hearing aid. This hearing aid sits in and around the second bend of the ear canal completely out of view. Previously, the smallest hearing aids could only sit in the first bend of the ear canal, or at the entrance, and could still be seen from side on. The main reason why we couldn’t make hearing aids more discreet was due to size. Previously, we were unable to fit all the components required for a hearing aid into a shell small enough to fit into the second bend of the ear canal. With the latest engineering,

OMD of some description. Many factors contribute to the development

of OMDs in children and adults. Both allergies and asthma have increased significantly over the past 20 years, resulting in a ‘mouth-breathing’ habit in many children. Frequent bouts of tonsillitis and enlarged adenoids can also impact on the way your child breathes. Children who breathe through their mouth often develop a high narrow palate, which is often unable to accommodate all of the adult teeth, resulting in crowding. The tongue is made to sit low (just try putting your tongue on your palate with your mouth open!) which means the upper arch doesn’t get the muscular support it needs to grow into that nice horseshoe shape dentists and orthodontists like to see.

The good news, though, is that once the cause of the airway issue has been successfully treated, orofacial myofunctional therapy can help to restore proper nasal breathing habits. I also see a significant number of children with restricted tongues, or ‘tongue ties’. A tongue-tie limits the movement of the tongue so that the other muscles of

the face have to adapt during speech and swallowing. Orofacial myofunctional therapy can help to loosen the strong attachment and help reinstate the proper functions of the tongue so that proper swallowing and tongue rest postures can be possible. This is often in conjunction with minor surgery (a simple procedure performed under local anaesthetic by an experienced dentist or oral surgeon).

Many adults have retained OMDs that they developed during childhood and often experience problems with jaw pain, headaches, facial pain, dry mouth, grinding and clenching. Other people develop neurological disorders in their adult life, such as Bell’s Palsy, which dramatically impacts on the functions of their facial muscles. Orofacial myofunctional therapy is extremely helpful in these situations.

Finally, oral-habit cessation is my favourite part of orofacial myofunctional therapy. Through my offshoot clinic, The Thumbsucking Clinic, I love treating children who need help to give up their noxious sucking habits and then seeing their resulting happy healthy faces.

I love helping kids to stop sucking their thumbs, fingers and dummies. It’s all a part of my job as an orofacial myologist at The Australian Clinic of Orofacial Myology. An orofacial myologist is a university-educated dental or speech pathology professional who has undertaken specific training in orofacial myology – the study of the facial and oral muscles.

We specialise in the treatment of OMDs (orofacial myofunctional disorders). An OMD is characterised by an abnormal lip, jaw, or tongue position during rest, swallowing or speech. Oral habits like thumb sucking, finger and dummy sucking, mouth breathing or open mouth positioning and ‘tongue thrust’ (when the tongue pushes against or between the teeth during speech or swallowing) are all orofacial myofunctional disorders.

In recent years, dental professionals have become increasingly concerned about the impact of OMDs on the growing face and jaws. Children with malocclusion and dental abnormalities like over-jet, cross-bite and open-bite (where the back teeth touch, the front teeth are open) will most likely have an

SURVIVING A NEWBORN 101

You’ve just experienced the wonderment of welcoming a new child into the world. After days in hospital it’s time to take him home. You’ve mastered the car seat (10

points!), but as you carefully unload your pride and joy and excitedly introduce him to his new surroundings, mild panic starts to rise. Realisation sets in: You’ve made it, but what now? “There are lots of books written about toddlers, but very little about birth to six months,” Nicole explains as she realigns her Hyde Park office after a visit from one of her smaller clients. “A lot of parents don’t know what to do when they come home from hospital because no one has told them. However, those first few weeks are crucial to how the following months and years unfold… parents can fall into traps without realising, which can create habits that are very hard to break later.”

A mother to a five-year-old, nine-year-old and 11-year-old, Nicole reveals that she and her husband were married for years before they decided to have children – largely due to the horror stories conveyed by other couples. A psychologist,

she started to research starting a family and read numerous books, but to her surprise, each seemed to conflict with the other, leaving her more confused. That lack of consistent information steered her onto her current course, and eventually towards writing her own book, Baby Care, specifically targeting the birth to six-month period. Having helped hundreds of parents with children of all ages in her practice, Nicole says a key message in the book is about having the right quantities of sleep and food. “If you can get that right it can make the difference between enjoying being a parent and hating it,” Nicole tells, who recommends newborns receive 16 to 18 hours sleep a day and six feeds and shouldn’t be up for more than 45 minutes at a time.

She says it’s important to set behaviour patterns from the start, rather than unwittingly falling into a trap and having to undo the damage later, which is a lot harder. Especially when it comes to bedtime. “Whenever babies go to sleep their brains go through a checklist,” Nicole explains. “Like, ‘Dummy’s in, Mum’s singing,

Dad’s patting me, I’m being rocked’, etc. So when the baby stirs during his 40 minute sleep cycle and his dummy has fallen out, Mum and Dad aren’t there, and there’s no singing and patting, he will cry. So Mum or Dad will come back and pick baby up until he goes back to sleep and the cycle continues. The checklist for baby should be more like, ‘I’m in my room, it’s nice and cool, I’ve got sheets wrapped around me, my belly’s full…’ so baby goes tick, tick, tick, tick and goes back to sleep. At the end of the day, baby enjoys continuously waking up as much as you do.”

Now Baby Care is completed, Nicole is turning her focus to the next books in her series, which will deal with the same age group, but broken down into more detail. “I just really love educating people,” she tells. “Once they have the knowledge and start heading in the right direction they will soon start to see results… I have the best job in the world because parents love me!”

You can purchase your copy of BabyCare by Nicole Pierotti online at babysmiles.com.au.

SERVES 4Preparation time 45 minutesCooking time 20–25 minutes

1.5kg uncooked brown or blue swimmer crabs, or crab claws, scrubbed3 tbsp sunflower oil1 recipe quantity Chilli Crab Spice Paste2 tbsp tomato ketchup2 tbsp chilli sauce2 tbsp clear honey3 tbsp light soy sauce

TO SERVE1 recipe quantity boiled long-grain rice

1 To prepare each crab, pull off the triangular bony tail flap and discard. Press your thumb under the rear end of the crab and lift the body away from the back shell. Discard the shell and remove and discard the stomach bag and the gills at the sides of the body. Rinse the crab flesh and claws under running cold water and pat dry with kitchen paper. Pull the 2 front claws from the bodies and then, using the back of a knife or a mallet, slightly crack the shell of each claw. Cut the crabs into quarters with a large-bladed knife. If using crab claws only, rinse under running cold water and crack the claws slightly using a large-bladed knife.

2 Heat the oil in a wok or large frying pan over a high heat. Add the spice paste and cook gently, stirring occasionally, for 10–15 minutes until fragrant and the oil starts to rise to the surface.

3 Meanwhile, combine the tomato ketchup, chilli sauce, honey and soy sauce in a small bowl. Add the sauce mixture to the wok or pan, then pour in 90ml water and bring to the boil.

4 Tip in the crab pieces and push around the wok or pan until well coated with the sauce. Cover, reduce the heat to low and simmer for 8–10 minutes until the crab pieces turn bright orange and are cooked through. Serve immediately with boiled rice.

SINGAPOREAN CHILLI CRABThis slightly sweet, hot and spicy dish is undoubtedly one of the most popular ways to prepare crabs in Singapore. Fresh, meaty crabs are essential. When choosing a crab, gently press on the underbelly – if it is firm, then it will be more meaty. If using crab claws and not whole crabs, make sure that you crack the shell slightly before cooking, so that the flesh soaks up all the sauce. The shells will also peel away more easily.

CLAYPOT CHICKEN RICE

1 If using chicken drumsticks, rinse the drumsticks under running cold water and pat dry with kitchen paper. Remove the skin and then, using a large chef’s knife cut each drumstick into 2 pieces through the bone. Put the drumstick pieces or thighs, if using, into a large bowl and add the sesame oil, oyster sauce, light and dark soy sauces, rice wine, honey and ginger juice and season with pepper. Toss until each piece of chicken is well coated with themarinade, then cover with cling film and leave to marinate at room temperature for 30 minutes.

2 Put the rice in a claypot or deep, heavy-based saucepan. Place the pot over a high heat; pour in 2 cups water and bring to the boil. Stir well, then reduce the heat to low, cover and simmer for 10 minutes.

3 Meanwhile, heat the sunflower oil in a frying pan over a medium high heat. Add the mushrooms and stir-fry for 1 minute, then remove with a slotted spoon and leave to one side. Add the marinated chicken to the pan, reserving the marinade, and cook, stirring occasionally, for 10–12 minutes until almost cooked and browned. Leave to one side.

4 After the rice has simmered for 10 minutes and the liquid is almost absorbed, spread the chicken pieces and mushrooms on top of the rice. Cover and continue to cook over a very low heat for another15 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through. Add the reserved marinade and cook for 4–5 minutes, then add in the spring onions and cook for a further 1 minute. Serve immediately with the chilli slices sprinkled over, if you like.

SERVES 4

Preparation time 20 minutes, plus 40 minutes marinating and soaking timeCooking time 30–35 minutes

700g chicken drumsticks or 500g skinless, boneless chicken thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces1 tbsp sesame oil1 tbsp oyster sauce2 tbsp light soy sauce2 tbsp dark soy sauce

1 tbsp Shaoxing rice wine1 tbsp clear honey3cm piece of root ginger, peeled and finely grated, pulp discarded, reserving the juice350g long-grain rice, soaked and rested2 tbsp sunflower oil4 dried Chinese mushrooms, soaked, drained and sliced into thin strips2 spring onions, finely sliced2 red bird’s eye chillies, finely sliced, to serve (optional)freshly ground black pepper

If you can, cook this dish the traditional way in a claypot. You will get to enjoy a particularly crunchy layer of rice, which will form at the base and is an important characteristic of the dish. The combination of fluffy and crunchy rice, chicken generously coated in a tasty sauce, and the earthy flavour of Chinese mushrooms makes this a mouth-watering and satisfying dish.

SO, HERE I AM, IN MY CANBERRA OFFICE trying to avoid going to the main Chamber. My reason for doing this is not that my speech is bad or ill prepared. It is not that, suddenly, I have had an attack of shyness and stage fright. No, none of those things. It is because I am in pain.

You may recall my column last month where I regaled you with tales of my self-sacrifice and discipline as I re-entered the world of training under the guidance of another, clearly superior human being. My cause was not helped when, in my first interview, I was asked what I wanted to achieve. I said I wanted to be fitter, stronger, more flexible, and I wanted to lose weight. My trainer told me he could do the first three only. “Why can’t you help me lose weight? This is a gym where dreams come true, isn’t it?” The reply was brutal: “You eat too much”. So we have attacked diet as well.

Now, I am trying to work hard but my body is just falling to pieces. I did a knee and I hurt my back last year. We have been working on finding the source of my troubles. So far we have narrowed it to five key problems and 28 minor issues. Most, apparently, concern my lack of heart!!

Every time we step up to the next level (I am now competing with a couple of toddlers and a 90-year-old who is about to re-marry) I hurt myself. This time it is attributed to my back-related stiffness. My sciatic nerve is giving me hell. I got home last week and quickly proclaimed to Linda that I must have really put in because I was still feeling wobbly on my legs. It turns out my sciatic nerve was in play and the resulting nerve damage down the left leg has seen me forced to basically throw my foot out when I walk.

I am lucky that my trainer has a strong belief in science and takes a holistic approach to fitness. I am also lucky that my GP will not take my word when I say I am OK. The CT scan I had is proof positive that a lifetime packing in scrums with little or no training followed by a packet of smokes and a carton of beer may not have been the greatest regime for my future life.

The big thing I have to keep reminding myself is that it took me 52 years to get into this shape and I will not get another shape in a couple of weeks. I am not in great shape at present, but I am keen to improve. I cannot afford to sit back and say that it is too hard. I have made the commitment to get a better shape (round is a shape) and be stronger, fitter, and more flexible. Can you do me a favour and tell Linda to be nice to me?

MOST CHILDREN ARE AFRAID OF THE DARK AT TIMES. Some kids go through fears of the monsters under the bed or creatures in the bedroom cupboard. These fears usually last a few months but soon go away. But at times kids have fears that become excessive and stop them from joining in and having fun in life. At this point it has gone beyond shyness, nervousness and is actually anxiety. And as parents you can see this and want to help them but are not sure how to do just that.

Jack is a good example of a child struggling with anxiety. He becomes shy, nervous and anxious when he has to play with other kids. Jack went to a friend’s birthday party but there were other kids he didn’t know. Jack spent most of the time not moving from his mother’s side. There was the usual party games, Jack was longing to join in but not going to because he was too shy. Then the birthday mother started handing out lollies, Jacks mum knew he wanted some but that he wouldn’t get up, so he would miss out. So his mum, feeling sorry for him, went up and asked for some for Jack. Jack loved the lollies and his mum felt better for helping him.

How mum actually helped is what I call a ‘vicious cycle’. Mum knew that Jack would miss out, be upset, she had been through this so many times before! As a mother it is difficult to watch when your child suffers from anxiety and you just want to help. Now let’s just think about this from your child’s point of view, they were gripped by fear, wanted the lollies, but were too frightened to get them, mum gets them the lollies and thus gets them what they want. Your child actually becomes more reliant on you next time it is a similar situation. He has learnt that he can’t do it by himself he actually needs your help. Thus his confidence is further eroded and his anxiety keeps going.

What to do? Difficult and painful as it is, it is vital that you do not rescue your child and give them what they want by doing it for them. They have to experience the consequences of missing out on the party game, or the lollies because they made a mistake. (To them they feel as though the other children are scary and dangerous). Your child will learn that it wasn’t actually dangerous, and that they can cope if you don’t intervene. Not sure if your rescuing too much or too little? Then simply ask yourself “Did I really need to step in? What would have been the worst thing to happen if I hadn’t?”

Don’t despair, this is only one strategy, there certainly are many strategies that parents can learn to help their kids master their anxious feelings and their life becomes vastly different. In fact, life for the whole family becomes vastly different. Looking for more information? 2012: A SMILE ODYSSEY

We thought we’d be making day trips to Mars with our personal jetpacks by 2012. Or, at the very least, riding hoverboards here on Earth! But while living “in the future” might not look quite the way we imagined, one

area where things have moved at light-speed is dentistry.

Technology and techniques are continually being improved and refined – offering you advanced levels of care and comfort. In fact, state of the art dentistry can now give you straight teeth without a mouth full of metal braces. There’s no need to look like a robot strapped to a medieval torture rack!

A number of options are available: Damon Clear is a clear ceramic bracket system which combines tieless braces with high technology wires that are clinically proven to move teeth fast and comfortably with truly spectacular smile and facial results. Because they don’t have ties, they do not have to be tightened and – as a result – are gentle to the teeth and tissues. And without metal or elastic ties, nothing yellows during treatment – unlike other so-called clear braces.

DR MATTHEW LOMBARDI DENTIST AT SMILE DENTALSMILEDENTAL.COM.AU

Another possibility, and truly invisible, are lingual braces. These braces are placed on the inside surfaces of your teeth, so no one will ever know. Each individual brace is fully customised in a laboratory to follow the exact contours and shapes of your teeth. Each wire is bent and shaped for optimal performance, efficiency and comfort.

If you still cannot bear the thought of permanently affixed braces, Invisalign might be the treatment for you. It consists of a series of nearly invisible, removable aligners that are specially manufactured for your teeth, and replaced every couple of weeks. As you replace each aligner, your teeth will move little by little, week by week, until they reach their optimum position. This process offers the flexibility to brush, floss and eat as normal… and the relief of being able to take the aligner out for special occasions.

I’ll think you’ll agree that – when it comes to straightening teeth – the future is now!

Dr Matthew Lombardi has been part of the Smile Dental team since 2004. He believes your smile is one of your greatest natural assets, and central to your overall health and wellbeing.

MISCARRIAGE AFFECTS ONE IN FIVE PREGNANCIES, OR ONE IN TWO FOR WOMEN OVER 40. BUT WHILE IT’S A RELATIVELY LIKELY OCCURRENCE, THERE’S NOTHING PREDICTABLE ABOUT THE GRIEF THAT CAN FOLLOW AS THE COUPLE ADJUSTS TO A NEW REALITY.

RACHELL WAS NEVER SET ON HAVING CHILDREN. She had been happily married for six years and would joke with her husband Fred about ‘getting the snip’. Then one day, the 29-year-old literally woke up and decided she wanted to start a family. The couple – both young and healthy – thought conception would be easy, but after one-and-a-half years of trying unsuccessfully they went on IVF. Finally, after countless procedures, they were pregnant with their first baby. They were ecstatic – dreaming of his future, they had already picked a name (Joseph) and started getting used to the idea of being parents. But at 14 weeks their world imploded – they found out during a scan that they would never get to meet their baby. Rachell crumbled. “It was horrific. It took me a year to get myself together and even now I still cry about it,” she confides. “It didn’t help when people said things like ‘Oh well, it wasn’t meant to be… you can try for another’, or, ‘It was nature’s way’.” Once ready to try again, thankfully, the couple succeeded in becoming pregnant with Bellamia, but this time there was no excitement, no planning and no decorating of bedrooms – Rachell admits she refused to even smile until she’d passed the 20-week mark. However, it wasn’t long before they were welcoming their beautiful daughter into the world and they had plenty of reason to beam. But sadly their heartache wasn’t over just yet. In trying for a sibling for Bellamia, the couple lost Grace at 16 weeks, before going on to successfully have little Serenna (now two). “After Serenna’s birth I went to see a counsellor because I couldn’t cope,” Rachell tells. “That helped immensely in coming to terms with everything. I think it’s so important to realise that everyone has different ways of dealing with (loss) and grieving, and you shouldn’t pretend it hasn’t happened. I wanted friends

and family to acknowledge it and to be present in the conversation – not squirming awkwardly or avoiding me altogether.” Local child psychologist Nicole Pierotti explains miscarriage is really about the bigger issues of grief and loss. “Whether you’ve wanted children for years, or it’s a fairly new aspect, you’ve started to dream of what having a baby means. You’re thinking of what you’ll have, how you’ll parent, what Christmases and family holidays will be like, and you’re seeing babies everywhere. So when miscarriage happens it’s bigger than that – it’s the loss of your dreams for the future,” she tells. Nicole says women can typically blame themselves (“what did I do wrong?”) and can feel like they’ve let their husbands down and unintentionally push them away (“he’d be better off with someone who could give him a baby”), but communication is vital in keeping the relationship strong. “It’s important to keep talking as partners because some men won’t bring anything up because they don’t want to upset their partner, while she’s thinking the whole time that he doesn’t care,” Nicole explains. “Keep talking and addressing it.”

As well has having the support of her husband, Rachell also reached out to the local branch of the Miscarriage, Stillbirth and Newborn Death Support Group (SANDS), which holds monthly meetings and participates in the annual Mothers’ Day Service in May and Walk to Remember in October. Townsville SANDS member Marie Deuble says each year in Australia about 58,000 couples experience early pregnancy loss and each will react differently. “The only predictable thing about grief is that it’s unpredictable,” the self-described ‘trained listener’ tells. “It’s quite normal for a person or couple to initially be absolutely numb and friends and family may need to say things a few times for the information to be absorbed. It’s impossible to predict how long a person may grieve for and they may feel lethargic and not want to mix with the world.”

Marie advises friends and extended family to give loved ones the time to work through their emotions and, if you’re able to, offer a listening and non-judgemental ear, or simply acknowledgement. “If people don’t know what to say, just a friendly hand on the shoulder and, ‘I’m sorry for your loss’ is fine,” she says. “Don’t say things like, ‘You can always have another baby’, or, ‘It wasn’t meant to be’, because those things can be quite hurtful to a couple that’s grieving. Remember that other or future children will not replace the baby who has died.”

Those struggling to cope with a miscarriage should seek professional help from a psychologist or support group. SANDS has monthly meetings on the second Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm and the third Sunday of the month at 2pm at 143 Ross River Road, Mundingburra. Call 1300 072 637 for help or email [email protected]. SANDS’ Mother’s Day Memorial Service for babies is on Saturday, May 12 at 5.30pm in Anderson Park.

Pet heaven NQ is a locally-owned pet crematorium and cemetery, located amidst a tranquil setting of 200 acres natural bushland at Bluewater. Established in February 2003, the facility is licensed by Queensland Environmental Agency and fully approved by Local Government laws. We uphold a highly professional code of ethics and take pride in our ability to offer compassion and understanding at a difficult time. When pet owners contact us to find out how they can fittingly honour their beloved pet, they often ask the following questions:What services are offered? Pet Heaven NQ has a range of cremation services, whole body pet burial, and scattering or burial of cremated remains in the cemetery or a memorial garden. What do I do if my pet dies? Advise your vet surgery that you would like Pet Heaven to care for

your special pet. All vets hold our brochures. The staff will help you complete a form, advising us of your pet’s details. Should he or she pass at home, simply phone us and we will come to collect your much-loved pet.Can I leave my pet’s favourite toy for burial or cremation? Yes. A ball or small toy would be suitable. Larger rubber or plastic items and foam or cane bedding are not appropriate for cremation. How can I be sure that I am getting my pet’s ashes back? We operate under strict cemetery and crematory guidelines. Our process is very similar to that for humans. We use a simple but effective identification (ID) system that starts before we remove your pet from the vet or home and accompanies your pet through every step. This ID appears on your certificate of cremation or

burial for later reference.I don’t live in Townsville. Can I still use your service? We work closely with all local and regional veterinarians, including Magnetic Island. Our services extend to The Burdekin, Bowen, Charters Towers, Mt Isa and Ingham by arrangement with your vet surgery.Does it cost a lot of money for cremation? Our services are tailored to meet a range of budgets and most people agree our services are very reasonably priced. We provide a very professional service and can offer a payment plan for pensioners and pre-need payment options to assist. We have lost beloved pets ourselves and we understand how you feel when your pet passes, particularly the difficulty in making a decision about euthanasia.

here’s nothing better than a face-to-face conversation. It doesn’t matter if it’s a team project update, a one-on-one with a potential client, or a management meeting – in each case, seeing each other improves the experience and the outcome.

Cuts travel costsThe price of business travel really adds up. As well as airfares and accommodation costs, the lost productivity from people being away, and the fatigue they might suffer after getting back can also impact on your business. Videoconferencing lets you talk, face-to-face, without having to pack your luggage.Enhances relationshipsSeeing people’s faces helps us understand them better. We read visual clues and pick up on body language. Relationships that used to take months to build over email and phone, take just a few meetings using video. ‘Face time’ can lead to vastly improved relationships with customers and employees.Helps improve productivityHaving a stronger, more trusting relationship can have a direct impact on

a business’ productivity. That might sound like pop psychology, but it’s true – when a team of people have a better rapport, they collaborate more effectively and get things done faster. Because of this, videoconferencing has a particular benefit for businesses that are run out of several sites across the country. The ‘people power’ of video makes the distances between them irrelevant.Expands your meeting opportunitiesVideoconferencing can be moulded to suit your situation. Imagine this: a one-on-one meeting is completed with a simple video call from your desk. A road show or training session is transformed into an immersive video experience, complete with presentation tools that will really stick in the minds of your audience. A many-to-many conference becomes an interactive video meeting room, where all attendees can participate and be seen, making their voices heard.Ensure you check out the latest videoconference features available in the latest Telstra Business Phone system. investment properties, shares, cars, antique furniture, collections of artwork, and even jewellery (in some instances) are generally valued to ascertain market value.

Bonnie and Clyde’s respective solicitors will need to take into account a number of factors that the Family Law Act 1975 sets out, such as direct and indirect financial contributions to the marriage made by Bonnie, Clyde or their families, and non-financial contributions to the marriage, such as the role of homemaker and care of the children.

When Bonnie and Clyde started out they had no savings and Bonnie’s father gave them $80,000 cash to enable the young couple to buy a block of land. Bonnie’s father, being a builder, then built the home at cost for them. Both Bonnie and Clyde agree that Bonnie’s father’s input was a signif icant f inancial and non-f inancial contribution to their marriage. Also significant for Bonnie and Clyde was Clyde’s non-financial contribution in caring for the children while Bonnie was in prison and the fact that the children, Millie and Georgie, now live with him for nine days out of 14 each fortnight. Other factors such as Bonnie and Clyde’s standard of living during the marriage, the length of the marriage, current income, future

needs and likely future resources, child support, and whether Bonnie and Clyde are now living with another person in a de facto relationship, are just some of the other factors to be taken into account.

Ultimately, Bonnie and Clyde agree on a split taking into account, the above factors and agree that Bonnie will receive 45 per cent of the property pool, and Clyde 55 per cent. The important aspect of all this for Bonnie and Clyde is that the agreement was reached by consensus, without the need to institute court proceedings.

Bonnie and Clyde are a separated couple with two children. They have recently resolved the parenting issues between them by entering into ‘parenting orders’ that best suited their par ticular circumstances. Parenting orders usually outline where the child/children live, how much time they spend with the other parent, and when the parents can telephone or Skype them. Also, while the parent who is living with the child/children has the day-to-day responsibilities, there are some issues which parents must decide jointly – these involve the long term care, welfare and development of the child. For example, education decisions, medical issues, and religious upbringing.

Bonnie and Clyde now decide it’s time to settle property matters between them to enable both of them to start again.

They prepare a list of assets, as well as a list of their liabilities, and include in their list of assets the amount of superannuation both have accumulated up until now. Both consult their respective solicitors again as this is only the start of working through the process of determining how much each of them will receive from the nett assets they have accumulated so far. Assets such as superannuation funds, the family home,

DUO SUSTAINABLE LIVING

1 POWER YOUR HOME WITH THE SUNHere in Townsville, we have more than enough sunlight to go around. So take advantage of the sunshine and use solar panels to power your home.

2 HEAT THINGS UP NATURALLYWater heating accounts for almost one third of an average household’s energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. Solar hot water systems use the free and natural sun to efficiently heat water.

3 TRAVEL EFFICIENTLYOne litre of petrol produces about 2.5kg of greenhouse gasses and most air pollution. Drive less; and walk, ride and use public transport more. Plan your trips so you can get more errands done in one journey – during the first minutes of a car trip, the engine is cold which means there is an increase in fuel consumption per kilometre. Avoid peak-hour traffic whenever possible.

4 KEEP YOUR COOLShading your house with eaves and vegetation can save hefty numbers on your current home energy bills.

5 CREATE A TREE-FREE HOMESubstitute paper products around your home with more sustainable items. Replace paper napkins with cloth napkins; paper towels with cloth towels; purchase bleach-free toilet paper made from a high post-consumer waste content; use recycled timber, straw bale, bamboo or other materials to substitute newly cut wood for renovations.

6 WATCH YOUR WATER USAGEOur water usage both indoors and outdoors is placing great strain on our resources. Reduce your usage by using low flow or dual flush toilets, low flow shower heads and a front-loading washing machine. Always run full loads of laundry, choose short and cold water cycles whenever possible and avoid using a dryer.

7 BYO BOTTLESTo produce a single one litre plastic bottle of water requires seven litres of water and 1.5 megajoules of energy. Only 36 per cent of all plastic bottles purchased are recycled each year and over 400 million plastic bottles enter landfill annually. Use your own stainless steel water bottle and thermos. Not only will you be helping save the earth, you’ll save a few dollars too.

8 AVOID UNNECESSARY RUBBISHWhen ordering food, avoid receiving unnecessary items like plastic utensils, straws, and extra napkins. Buy ice cream in a cone instead of a cup, don’t accept ‘free’ promotional products or flyers, and buy products with the least amount of packaging.

9 GO ORGANICOrganic foods not only reduce emissions from transport and industrial energy, but they also lower the level of nitrogen released into the environment from artificial or synthetic fertilisers.

10 CHANGE HOW YOU EATWe eat lunch every day, so by changing the way we package our lunch has the potential to greatly increase our sustainability. Use a reusable bag or box with reusable containers, a thermos, cloth napkin and proper cutlery. Avoid aluminium foil, cling wrap, soft drink cans, juice boxes, plastic bottles or cutlery and Styrofoam.

Queenslanders are enjoying the sunny and smart state of Sanctum’s new development on the Northern Beaches.

Any of the 1,300 families who choose to live in the 167 hectare village will enjoy future-proofed dwellings that include fibre to the home, and a quarterly pay cheque from their electricity providers, courtesy of the solar panels on every roof. It’s all included in Sanctum’s smart solar package that is available for a limited time.

Purchasing a 450sqm to 1000sqm lot comes with $8,500 worth of German-made quality solar system.

Maidment Development chief Glen Maidment said, “The absence of power bills in your letterbox

while living in your dream home is a great incentive for people tired of wasting dollars on the rental market. Now is the time to own and save.” Maidment Development Group partnered with Townsville’s Horan & Bird Electrical to install the solar package. This long established electrical firm will install the German-made panels and be available to maintain the photo-voltaic technology, leaving residents without that bitter taste in the mouth from waiting for a national firm to fit you in.

At Sanctum – the smartest community in Townsville, the entire estate is already using superfast fibre optic available to all 1,300 lots. Visitors to the first builder’s village will remember seeing its full capability. The second display

village will open its doors during the year.Moving to Sanctum is now even easier. The

increasing scarcity of resources will force the cost of electricity up but new Sanctum residents stand to gain. Energy providers in Queensland pay the best rate in Australia for power. Sanctum residents will have the opportunity to sell power to the grid at an average cost of 44 cents per kilowatt. The beauty of Sanctum is in all its extras; its 30 hectare open spaces and parklands, proximity to pristine beaches with large blocks available. While enjoying all this, householders will know they have another hard working earner on their side – those panels taking in many hours of sunshine.

BEST TIME TO SAVE WITH SOLAR IS NOWNQ SOLAR

Are you considering going solar? If so, now is the time to take action. Ergon Energy has advised customers and installers to lodge Inverter Energy System (IES) applications early to secure the maximum number of solar credits from the Federal Government.

IES applications should be lodged and approved before a system is installed. The IES application secures a network agreement with Ergon. This allows you to install a system at your home and export electricity back to Ergon. You will need your electricity bill and rates notice to complete the application.

The Federal Government allocates Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) based on

the size of the system. For the first 1.5kW of a system there is currently a multiplier of three. On 1 July 2012 this multiplier will decrease to two reducing the number of STCs by 31. Each STC generates a financial discount off the cost of your system.

Ergon’s PV Industry Alert stated: “We are expecting a significant increase in the rate of IES applications prior to June 30, 2012, when the Federal Government’s Solar Credits rebate is reduced. Ideally, all applications for systems intended to be installed before that date should be lodged by Monday, April 30, 2012.”

Ergon says they will work hard to process applications received after the April 30, but

application numbers rise significantly at this time of year creating delays.

For more information about the Solar Credit Scheme, visit the Federal Government’s website at www.climatechange.gov.au/government/initiatives/renewable-target/need-ret/solar-credits-faq.aspx

The team at NQ Solar is able to visit your home or business for free to advise you of the system that best suits your needs.

DUO SUSTAINABLE LIVING

As climate change continues to make headlines across the globe, Queenslanders have discovered being green can also benefit their bottom line.

Mount Isa resident Val Bacon says she now receives power payments instead of power bills, thanks to a range of energy-efficient installations she and her husband have pursued in the past year.

“On the roof you can see the 12 solar energy panels we got thanks to a green loan from Queensland Country Credit Union, plus a solar hot water heater, two vents and a skylight,” she says. “The roof has been lined and the house is fully insulated. The walls are clad and the house

has been rewired.“The loan really helped. There were no

application fees, no monthly admin fees and it came with a lower interest rate.”

As people search for ways to reduce their cost of living, being green has become a good financial choice. With a focus on both the environment and helping people improve their financial wellbeing, Queensland Country Credit Union offers a reduced-rate green loan for products that lower the energy consumption of a home.

Company Chief Executive Officer, Aileen Cull, says the Green Loans are a popular product, supporting members who want to make

sustainable changes.“People wouldn’t typically associate a Credit

Union with being environmentally focused, but helping communities become more sustainable is just another way we can contribute positively to the lives of the people who bank with us,” she says.

Queensland Country Health Fund is also supporting going green with its accommodation units for members taking out the sustainable design award at the HIA Building Awards in Townsville last year.

Contact your local Queensland Country Credit Union branch for more information on green loans or visit qccu.com.au.

STOP THE MADNESS!ALLSAFE ENERGY EFFICIENT PRODUCTS

Why keep paying your hard-earned dollars to a power company when it’s possible to install your own solar power unit and have ERGON pay you instead…madness? Most certainly not! Solar is more affordable today than ever before and you’re missing out on turning a major outgoing expense into a potential incoming.

“So how can we help you achieve this, and why should we” you’re asking? Consider the following…

AllSafe Energy Efficient Products, established in Townsville over 10 years ago, offers energy-efficient products and services to trade and retail clients. Being a true local, the business grew through customer trust and support and, 10

years on, is the leading one-stop shop for energy efficiency needs in Townsville and surrounds.

The goal – provide you with the right advice on products to suit your needs while reducing your power bill and impact on the environment.

By installing a solar power system on your home or office building, you’ll not only increase the value and saleability of your real estate, but also re-direct current outgoing electricity payments on this asset, back to your own pocket.

ERGON pays you for any surplus unused power, left on the electricity grid, at $0.44/kWh. This is the rate legislated under the Electricity Act of 1994, by the Queensland Government, stating that a solar bonus of 44c/kWh (kilowatt hour) be

paid to you until 2028 for surplus solar kilowatt hours left by your solar system on the grid (as at print 26/03/2012).

Example, a high quality 5kW Canadian Solar power unit will produce around 25kWh/day, potentially saving you about $3000/year (through a neutralised power bill and potential cheque back from ERGON).

The Federal Government recently withdrew its solar hot water grant without notice. The State election may bring further changes to the Queensland feed-in tariff (as happened in NSW and WA after change of government) – so do the bright thing! Call now and lodge your refundable deposit for a seat at the table.

“See the Difference”

Supporting people throughout North Queensland by providing a range of programs to assist individuals, families and communities; Centacare Townsville has embraced environmental values in the workplace more vigorously since July 2010. But that does not mean that the sustainability message resonates with everyone. So what should you do when someone says ‘no’ – whether it’s at work or home – when they are asked to make environmentally positive changes? Centacare Townsville has adopted several responses to negative statements, such as:

“It’s too hard”: What is so hard? How can I make it easier for you and everyone else?

“It’s never been done”: Great then let us be the first! Let’s embrace the opportunity to show initiative.

“It’s not my problem”: It’s not yours, because it’s everyone’s problem. Management will love us for solving this issue.

“I don’t have the time”: Once you get used to it, this will actually save time.“It will never work”: How do you know unless you try? Why don’t we try it first then make an assessment?“It’s been tried before and did not work”: Was it done properly before? Let’s try to work out why it was not effective the last time. These responses help change a negative into a positive and assist people to move forward. Centacare Townsville is working hard to turn sustainable actions into the cultural norm. Eighteen months on Centacare Townsville is reaping the benefits of its environmentally-friendly changes, including cost savings and positive staff feedback.

Premium Glass Fencing NQ can provide your home with a stunning and sophisticated look! The pool is made the focal point of your entertaining area by integrating it with the surrounding space, removing the look of unsightly traditional pool fencing.

The semi-frameless and frameless glass fencing systems are designed to complement the decor of any home, including balconies exposed to extreme wind conditions.

Owner/manager Rick Gillespie says Premium Glass Fencing NQ (PGF) prides itself on the fact that their fencing systems are constructed with aluminium extrusions, which is the ‘material of choice’ for a greener world.

“Aluminium is recyclable, sustainable and versatile and the extrusion process is acknowledged as being an environmentally responsible approach in the manufacture of innovative products,” Rick says.

PGF are the industry’s “Supply & Installation Professionals” and every project is custom designed to suit the clients’ needs while providing a safe and secure environment.

Rick has more than 15 years experience in the local building industry, is fully-licensed for fencing and holds a ‘Pool Safety Inspector’ license. “There has been a lot of confusion around new pool safety legislation introduced in December 2010,” Rick tells. “So if you have any concerns, we can inspect your pool surround and provide you with expert advice regarding pool safety laws. PGF is your ‘one-stop-shop’ for pool fencing and pool safety inspections.”

GreenSmart was established by the HIA in 1999 to promote practical, affordable and durable environmental solutions for residential design and construction. MV Designer Homes chooses to exceed current building regulations for energy and water efficiency, along with looking at the way the home is built to make sure the impact on the environment is reduced.

When working with MV Designer Homes, you have the advantage of choosing the best options to meet both your needs as well as the optimum solutions for the block of land you have selected.
