Principal.

I recently received this letter congratulating our students for their contributions to Starstruck 2014. I think it is worth reproducing

it in full to let everyone know just how wonderful our staff and students are.

I am writing to thank you for allowing Dungog High School to be a part of the massed choir for Star Struck 2014 “Magic

Happens”. The children from your school were extremely well behaved and should be acknowledged publicly for their hard work in preparing

the repertoire for this year’s show. Phyl & Louise did an amazing job preparing props and ensuring that the children were well prepared, not to

mention giving up evenings and the weekend to be there for the students.

I understand that allowing your school to be involved comes at quite a significant cost in monetary terms, however, the skills and experience

the students gain from this, in my opinion, far outweigh these costs. To be involved with Star Struck is a memory your students will hold for a

lifetime, a legacy you have facilitated. I ask again that you please acknowledge the hard work both your staff and students have put into the

choir this year. I am looking forward to Dungog High

School’s continual involvement in the future.

Yours musically,

Mr Chris Blake,

Choir Director Starstruck 2014 “Magic Happens”

Business Enterprise Day

Congratulations to all the students and staff involved in last Friday’s Business enterprise Day. It was a wonderful success, raising $1600 for

charity. The queues at Recess and lunch told their own story about the popularity of the food available; well done whoever decided on the

varieties of food available.

I know it was hard work, but it looked like the most fun I have ever seen in any assessment task.

Reports

Reports that have been completed will be given to students towards the end of this week. Year 10 will be distributed in week 1 next term. It

has been a huge task to get all of these reports completed. Parents will have them before the Parent Teacher night next term. Remember that

if your child will not be at school when the reports are distributed, they will be available next term; if you wish to get them earlier you need to

provide a stamped self addressed A4 envelope this week.

Congratulations to Rachael Somerville, Jaime Lee Russell and Laura Cotterill who have been

will be representing the Worimi Nation in the Tournament which is being held in Dubbo during NAIDOC

people by having all participating teams consist of 8 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and 4 people of non-Aboriginal descent.

All teams will represent their community under their Traditional local Aboriginal Nation name and their uniforms will be adorned with the local

totems of their Nation.

This program will provide an opportunity for young Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander people to take pride in and identify with their local

communities, as well as an opportunity for non-Aboriginal people to learn about their local Aboriginal culture and foster relationships and

understanding between local cultures.

Well done girls, we are very proud of your efforts so far, train hard for Dubbo in July!.

Parent/Teacher Night Term 3

A whole school Parent/Teacher Night is being held at the school on

Wednesday 23rd July 2014 from 5.00pm to 7.00pm in the MPC. The

night provides an opportunity for staff/parents to discuss issues of

concern related to students and help organise the necessary support.

Our experience is that parent assistance and co-operation in working

with us for the benefit of their student will lead to improved results.

Could you please make an appointment on the Student Booking Sheet with the relevant teachers of your child or children. If you wish to

discuss the matter at another time please contact the school on 49923022 to arrange an appointment.

Booking sheets will be distributed this week (a copy is also attached to this Newsletter – page 7) for interview times to be arranged.

Dungog Horse Sports

On Friday 13th June 24 students represented Dungog High School at the

Dungog Horse Sports Day. The grounds were wet and slippery and all our

riders rode exceptionally well and rode to the conditions.

Congratulations to all, it is a pleasure to take this team to competitions.

I look forward to everyone participating at our next Horse Sports Day at

Gloucester, date to be advised.

CAREERS NEWS TRY A SKILL

Last Friday, a small group of Year 9 students attended Hunter Valley

Training Company's new facilities at Rutherford to participate in the annual

Try A Skill event. Thank you to Liana Nadalin who organises this fantastic

hands-on event and to HVTC, Advanced Careers College, Police, Rural

Fire Service, Defence Forces, Hunter Trade College, Ausgrid and TAFE

representatives who give up their time to show students what is involved in various trades and occupations.

A highlight was meeting up with Harrison Jones, an ex DHS student, who is now employed at Peabody and trains with HVTC.

Thank you also to Mrs Judd who accompanied us and took some of the photos and also to the students who demonstrated our PBL qualities of

Respect, Responsibility and Personal Best and made the day so pleasant.

Enterprise Day 2014

On Friday 20th June, Year 11 Business Studies held Dungog

High Schools 2nd annual Enterprise Day. The students started the

day bright and early setting up their stalls. From cow costumes to

willows the quad at Dungog High was transformed into a real

festival environment. Last year’s organiser Ms Archer was on

standby to assist students and replenish stock throughout the

day, which was greatly appreciated as all groups at some stage

during the day needed their produce restocked.

The stalls had a total of 70 minutes of selling time. I am

extremely proud and pleased to report that over $1600.00 in

profits was raised for different charities by the businesses. The

charities receiving donations include ‘Forget-Me-Not Foundation’,

‘Autism Spectrum Australia’, ‘World Wildlife Fund’, ‘Sanfilippo

Foundation’, ‘Leukaemia Foundation’ and ‘Cerebral Palsy

Australia’. The students would also like to take this opportunity to

thank a variety of local sponsors that came on board to help them

on the day, these include Dungog Bottle Shop, Bowen Insurance,

Phil’s Mobile Mechanical Repair and Services, Dowling’s General

Store, Dungog Bakery, Kernaghan Family Butchers, Pete’s Fruit

& Veg, Lovey’s IGA, Clarence Town Butchery and Kristin Dobbie.

Look out for this week’s Dungog Chronicle for more photos on

this fantastic day. Well Done Year 11 Business Studies!

Year 11 Subject Selection Process for 2015 1. Careers lessons during Week 8 and 9, Term 2

During their Careers lessons over the next two weeks students will be issued with their Student Information Booklet that contains all

the vital information in relation to the courses on offer at Dungog High School, including any course fees. Ms Smith will walk the

students through the booklet and how they need to select their subjects.

Students will have the opportunity to discuss this booklet with their parents/caregivers over the July school holiday period.

2. Subject Information Evening – Wednesday 25 June 2014

Students, along with their parents and caregivers, are invited to attend our Subject Information Evening to be held in N Block on

Wednesday 25 June commencing at 7:30pm. This is an opportunity for the students and parents to speak with the Head Teacher’s

from each faculty about the courses on offer.

3. Student Interviews – Tuesday 15 and Wednesday 16 July 2014

As a result of feedback from our students through the Tell Them From Me and Year 12 Exit surveys we have introduced a new step to

the subject selection process. Each student in Year 10 will be interviewed by a Head Teacher, with support from the Careers Adviser,

in relation to what the student wants to do after high school and what subjects they are considering selecting. The Head Teachers will

also have information from English, Mathematics and Science to guide students to the most appropriate level of subject for their

ability.

These interviews will be held on Tuesday 15 July and Wednesday 16 July 2014 (first two days back in Term 3). Students will be given

an interview time by the end of this term and parents/caregivers are more than welcome to come along also. The students will only

be required at school for their interview. Interview schedule below.

Students will make their Round 1 Subject Selection on this day.

A Reminder from the office

Thank you to all our families for considering the following very important requests.

To avoid your child being disappointed, we ask that when students pay for

excursions that you please send the money & permission note together on the

same day. Often excursions are offered on a first in basis & we find it a difficult but

necessary task to turn away students to be fair to those who have both note &

money.

Which brings us to our second request: Please get your permission notes & monies in as soon as you receive them, to ensure an early

spot. There are numerous reasons for this: Teachers need to know well before the date as response dictates the likelihood of an excursion

continuing, Teachers need adequate time to cancel arrangements before avoiding costs, and more importantly, for those popular excursions

which go ahead (which is most of them) it’s unavoidable for students who might miss out because they have left it til the last minute to submit.

Online payments are gratefully accepted & we look forward to introducing the Parent portal sometime next year, where parents will be able

to view all their child’s invoicing, payments made & hold credits for upcoming events. However until then, please note the current parent
