A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPALS

From the Principal

Dear Parents,

The Fall season is now upon us and our Dunbar students are settling into a routine. We have had a wonderful start to the new year!

During the month of September our students celebrated ‘Proud to Be an American Day’ by wearing red, white and blue, singing

patriotic songs and discussing ways that we can show respect for our country, our school and each other. Father’s Walk 2017 was an

amazing success! We had over 400 participants in this fantastic event! It was wonderful to see the smiles on our students’ faces as

they proudly walked into Dunbar School with their father, grandfather, uncle, or cousin. The encouraging words from these special

guests were thoughtful and heart-warming. Thank you to all who participated!

In the weeks ahead, our students will be trained for the purpose of lockdown and evacuation, which are essential to ensure the safety

of our children in the event of an emergency. We will be completing these drills at various points throughout the school year so that

our children understand and feel comfortable with the procedures. We complete regular fire drills and tornado drills during the year as

well.

Our students will participate in a variety of classroom activities that provide opportunities to explore different careers, during College

and Career Readiness Week, October 16-20. They will also enjoy an active and inspirational assembly with Jim Basketball Jones on

October 20. Red Ribbon Week is October 23-27, and students will participate in activities and discussions about the importance of

making good choices, good hygiene, exercise and eating healthy.

Our Harvest Parade and Classroom Parties are fast approaching, and with that, we would like to encourage you to please help your

child choose a costume that is appropriate for school. Please stay away from any bloody or gory masks and costumes. Please do not

send any weapons. We want this to be a fun day and not a scary one for our students.

We encourage you to visit our Dunbar webpage regularly. Also, in our ongoing efforts to provide you with the most accurate and up-

to-date information related to Dunbar School, we encourage you to follow us on Twitter @TallmadgeK5 and @TallmadgeK5AP.

We would like to take a moment to thank our lunchroom and library volunteers, and those who generously donated items for our

Father’s Walk. Dunbar is truly a special place and we value and appreciate your continued support.

PTA PRESIDENTS CORNER

Hello Dunbar Families!! Thank you so much for your help in making Back to School Night a success. The raffle baskets were amazing

again this year! A special thanks to Sarah Ickes who organized the whole event. And Nicole Haley who organized all the chips and

drinks for the evening.

I want to give a shout out to Walmart in Brimfield for their wonderful donation of bottled water for all the students and staff.

Tuesday September 26th was a scorcher and with their help we were able to pass out ice cold water to all the students and staff.

PTA provided each class with popsicles as well.

Please check out our upcoming events section.

Our next PTA meeting is Monday, October 2nd at 6pm. Hope to see you there.

Jamie Hamrick

PTA President

Reminder:

Parents please pack napkins, spoon, fork and a drink in your children’s

lunch box/bag. Lately there has been an increase in students not having

these items. Thank you!

UNITY DAY Wednesday, October 25th

Please wear ORANGE to unite against bullying.

Father's Walks were a great success this year. Thank you to all that donated items. This is the first year in a while that we have had enough to cover all 3 days and didn't have to send out an S.O.S. for more mini donuts. A Big Thank you to those that came in to help serve and clean up each day. Because of all of you each day went smooth and clean up was a breeze. We had more than enough chips and water for all on Back to School Night. Thank you to everyone that donated to this event. Our next mission will be to provide the Staff with a little something to keep them going during Parent/Teacher Conferences. More information will come out in October for the conferences. Thank you again for all you do, Nicole Haley

SCHOOL NURSE UPDATES

12 tips to keep young kids safe on Halloween

Keeping young children safe on Halloween involves not just trick-or-treating with caution, but being cautious at home as well.

Candles inside a jack-o-lantern, for example, can be magnets for toddlers and preschoolers. Consider using a flashlight or glow stick instead of a candle to light your pumpkin, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) advises. If you use a candle, a votive candle is safest.

The AAP also recommends that parents:

• Plan kids’ costumes that are bright and reflective, and fit well. Make sure that shoes fit well and that costumes are short enough to prevent tripping, entanglement or contact with flame.

• Consider adding reflective tape or striping to costumes and trick-or-treat bags for greater visibility.

• Make sure costumes, wigs and accessories carry a label indicating they are flame resistant.

• Consider face paint instead of masks, which can block peripheral vision.

• Keep the home safe for visiting trick-or-treaters. The path to your front door should be well lit and clear of objects, wet leaves and snow.

• Wait until children are home to check treats before consuming.

• Ration treats for days and weeks following Halloween.

• A good meal prior to parties and trick-or-treating will discourage youngsters from filling up on Halloween treats.

• Consider purchasing non-food treats for those who visit your home, such as coloring books or pens and pencils.

• While trick-or-treating with young kids, make sure they don’t stray too far, especially when it comes to crossing the street.

With neighborhoods filled with kids and cars, Halloween carries an especially high risk of injury. “Halloween is the most deadly day of the year for pedestrians ages 18 and younger,” said Heather Trnka, Injury Prevention Coalition supervisor for Akron Children’s Hospital. “Children are so excited on Halloween, and they move in unpredictable ways. They are running around and often dart into the street.”

If trick-or-treating in an area without sidewalks, walk on the edge of the road facing traffic and use a flashlight, she said. All kids or their parents should have a flashlight. Glow sticks are also great.
