April Song of the Month“Unclouded Day”

THE CARTER FAMILYThis month’s musical theme is “Carter Family Tunes”. You may find it a bit unusual for us to put the spotlight on a certain musical group, but a lot of the songs in our songbook were made popular by The Carter Family.

From Wikipedia, “The Carter Family was a traditional American folk music group that recorded between 1927 and 1956. Their music had a profound impact on bluegrass, country, Southern Gospel, pop and rock musicians as well as on the U.S. folk revival of the 1960s. They were the first vocal group to become country music stars.”

Some of their songs that will sound familiar to you are “Wildwood Flower”, “Will the Circle Be Unbroken”, “Wabash Cannonball”, and many more. Hope you have fun picking one out and playing it for us at the April meeting!

From Your President…by Mary Sanders

Transitions are hard. Even good, happy transitions have their challenges as we negotiate the new terrain, the new rules, where this is or what that is. Howard and I are in the midst of such a transition…selling our old house, staying in temporary housing for several weeks with Sunny and Gracie, our dog and cat, stuffed into the equivalent of a tiny home, and then moving to a new house with floors yet to be done, no fridge, no bed, no washer/dryer, and despite our best efforts, no garbage pickup (yet). We are excited, disoriented, and exhausted. Having our daughter, Morgan, near us helps, as do the friendly faces of new neighbors and friends. One day we will wake up and feel settled, having established a new routine, a sense of knowing what to expect, and a better idea of what we can and need to do in this new land.

The greatest initial struggle I had as president of the Society was not knowing what I should or could be doing. That transition was difficult for several reasons. First, as a relatively new member, I had almost no history to guide me. My experience of our Society was primarily what had transpired for the several previous years. Second, the written description of my role was somewhat limited and aspects of the description were in apparent conflict with other aspects of the description. Third, more experienced members had expectations for my role that were different from the role as written or as interpreted by me.

We, as a Board, are committed to making such Society transitions smoother and easier in the future to allow us to move forward in productive and exciting ways. The Bylaws Committee is working to clarify and correct our Society bylaws. Included in that process is clarification of the various roles that support and manage the functioning of our Society. I would like you, as a current member of this group of volunteer music lovers, to assist with our functioning. Here are some ways you can help. Get involved. Participate in Board and Committee meetings. Ask questions. Make suggestions. Get to know what various Board members are doing and how they are doing what they do. Familiarize yourself with our history; ask a long-term member about our past. Dream about our future, and share that dream. Be willing to take on a Board or Committee position and start now, as an apprentice. Support continuity as well as the flourishing of us.

EDITOR’S NOTE:What a great meeting we had in March! Our guest performer, Geoff Davis, gave us an entertaining example of what can be done on the ukulele and how much fun it is. The workshop that followed gave us an idea of how to do what he does. And we had a great turnout! So good to see new folks and old folks returning. Oh, and the snacks provided by the Ukulele Ladies were lovely!

CHEER COMMITTEEPlease let Connie Temm, our Member-at-Large, know if you know of anyone in the Society in need of a little cheering up in their lives. We all need a little support from time to time. [email protected]

Notes from your Music CoordinatorCathy Platt

[email protected]; phone: 317-485-5010

Starting in April the Eagle Creek Folk Festival set leaders will begin holding rehearsals for our Saturday and Sunday Big Band performances. Dan Reneau is leading the Saturday performance at 1 pm and will have practice at the April meeting (see below). The set lists will be on our Yahoo site in the next few weeks. The signup and information sheets for both performances will be available at the April and May meetings. Remember, this is a venue where the number of players has to be limited to 25, so be one of the first 25 to sign up.

This month at our meeting, during the Big Band hour we will be practicing some of the tunes for the Saturday Eagle Creek performance that we don’t often play. There are some great ones in our book that you will like. Our goal is to expand the list of songs that we use in our gigs. Take a glance through your Society Song book and if there is a song or two that you’d like to be playing at our gigs, let me know. We will put them into our practice line-up and get them ready to perform.

We will be performing for our beloved Speedway Library on Saturday, July 1, 2017 at 7 PM. This library has been a friend of our Society for a long time (20 years??) and we have been a favorite part of their outdoor summer music program. This is a rain or shine event. Hopefully, we will be outside on the parking lot next to the building. If it is raining, we will be performing inside. There will be sound provided. Signup sheets for this gig will be available at the next two Society meetings, as well.

Kudos to Lois Molitor and Barbara Poole who have given me contact information which led to gigs for the Society! Remember, if you happen to be visiting some place that you think might be a good venue for us to play, all you need to do is send me the name of the venue and I will follow up with them. If you can get a contact name (usually an Activities Director or Manager), email or phone number, that would also be helpful. You are a great resource!

A Word From your Eagle Creek Folk Festival Committee ChairMorgan Sanders-Jackson

With just over two months left before the big event, The Eagle Creek Folk Festival Committee has been busy! This month the name of the game is, “Sign Up!”. Attached to this newsletter are the performance and volunteer registration form, as well as the logistics questionnaire for performers. Please take a look at the forms and let me know if you have questions. The performance and volunteer registration form must be mailed or emailed to me by Saturday, April 22, 2017. The lineup will be confirmed by our May meeting.

Please consider volunteering at the Festival this year. We are in especially great need of support for the Society Info Table and the Sertoma Food Booth, both of which require at least two volunteers per shift and which are high visibility contact points between us and the public (read: super important!). If you are interested in helping at these two locations but aren’t sure what volunteering entails, don’t hesitate to contact me.

RESOURCE VOLUNTEER INFORMATIONSometimes folks come to the Society meeting interested in learning a new instrument and needing a little guidance. It does not take much time to do this. It is very helpful to just look at their instrument, help them tune it, maybe show them a chord or two. A point in the right direction goes a long way. Please contact Howard Detamore, our vice president, at [email protected] if you can help with this. And thanks to those who have volunteered!

This includes any canopies or signs related to the Eagle Creek Folk Festival. Thanks in advance for your help.
