THE TEEN SUMMIT IS: An awesome opportunity for youth ages 12-17, with emphasis on 13-16 year olds, to attend a 3-day, 2-night summit. The Summit provides many avenues to help youth and adult become even stronger leaders in their communities. The Summit is primarily delivered through workshops and activities. Another goal of the summit is to listen to needs and challenges, to give everyone the opportunity to craft solutions to those needs. A place to meet a lot of other great young leaders and supportive adults who are also involved in making their communities a better place. A place to have fun while learning! National Mentoring Month is the time each year when our nation spotlights the importance of mentors and the need for every child to have a caring adult
in his or her life. When you serve as a mentor you enrich your own life as much as you do the life of a child.

Welcome to The Dukes Foundation’s Teen Summit. This special event marks the 10th Anniversary of National Mentoring Month.
The Dukes Foundation is a non-profit 501 C3 mentoring organization established to provide young men with the opportunity to enhance their academic aptitude and performance, nourish a healthy, mental and physical state of being, and ultimately develop into lifelong learners in order to help them make a positive impact in and around their communities. Our efforts are geared to support your School’s programs, reduce delinquency rates, and eliminate drug abuse and lower community disturbance. To that end we would like to extend an invitation to you to establish a partnership with us to allow students to receive our services. Studies indicate that schools have the potential to increase academic achievement level with the support and services mentoring organizations such as what The Dukes Foundation has to offer.

Please allow me to express my sincere gratitude to the Dukes Foundation for taking the time and effort to invest in the future, our children. Sponsoring a Teen Summit during National Mentoring month is an excellent opportunity to show our young people that we value and respect them. Mentoring relationships are often cited as key to developing productive and successful youth. Mentoring is a very powerful tool because the mentee has someone to connect with unconditionally. When this type of relationship is possible, it affords the mentor and mentee an opportunity to work through whatever barriers that are hindering the mentee from experiencing success.
It is crucial for the survival of our nation, that all young people are nurtured, respected and afforded an opportunity to develop into productive citizens. Again, I want to personally thank the Dukes Foundation for investing in our youth.

Biography of Guest Speaker, F. Renee Gaters, Attorney at Law
Our Guest Speaker, Attorney at Law, Fycena Renée Gaters was born in Summerton, South Carolina. She attended Scott’s Branch High School in Summerton and gradu-ated with honors in 1976. Thereafter, she matriculated at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude receiving her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science/Pre-Law in 1980. In pursuit of her life’s dream. Attorney Gaters enrolled at the University Of South Carolina School Of Law where she obtained her Juris Doctor Degree in 1984. Attorney Gaters holds membership in several professional associations; American Bar Association, South Carolina Bar Association, Charleston County Bar Associa-tion, South Carolina Association for Justice, National Association of Criminal De-fense Lawyers and the South Carolina Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Her Board of Directors affiliations include: Charleston County Public Defender As-sociation Board of Directors and Charleston Low Country Development Corpora-tion On September 23, 1995, Attorney Gaters was awarded the George W. Collins Award by the Congressional Black Caucus in Washington, D.C. Other honors and awards include YWCA Twin Honoree Award, Clarendon County NAACP Person of the Year in 1991, One of the 25 to Watch in the 1990's@ (Charleston Post and Courier), the Daniel Joseph Jenkins Select Award presented by the Jenkins Orphanage in 1995, and the J. Arthur Brown Award for her Philanthropic Contributions, dedicated service, and human kindness by the Charleston Branch NAACP in 1997.

The Discussion Segment focuses on the topic, Taking Responsibility with highlights about; Building Self-Esteem, Aiming to be yourself in a positive way and the price to pay to secure lasting success.
A place where youth will meet caring adults and positive role models that support their leadership efforts and believe in young people’s abilities to do even greater positive things! It is also a place where adults are expected to work in partnership with young people and treat youth with mutual respect.
The Summit will help with Mentoring & Tutoring to prevent crimes, school dropout and offering services for at-risk youth, After School Programs, Mental Health as well as other programs in the community serving youth.
It will provide life skills training for youth and create a communication medium for youth. Reach out to the faith-based community for collaborations. It will increase promotion and awareness of existing programs and services for youth and families as well as issues and resources.

Please allow us to share some important facts with you about what the Dukes Foundation mean to us (Mentees.)
Our lives have been positively reshaped beginning with new and improved thinking and increase in self-confidence instilled in us at the weekly Mentoring Sessions held on Thursdays after School.
We have gained social exposure through attendance of theatrical productions, exhibitions, musical concerts and other cultural events.
On the Academic Advancement level, we have benefited from twice monthly Saturday Academy Sessions were held at Morehouse Col-lege’s Physics Department and Intense Preparatory Workshops in Mathematics and English were conducted at Kennedy and Harper Archer Middle Schools. We are grateful for the sup-port of many Tutors and Facilitators.
There are many other benefits of The Dukes Foundation mentoring programs. They include:
Improving self morale
Increased awareness of current affairs
Keeping us focused in school
Assistance in defining (future) career goals
Leading us to resources we might not find on our own
Providing support for new behaviors, attitudes and ambitions
Increasing young people's ability to prepare for college, our career and future
