Forget coffee to go, in Dubrovnik people have coffee to stay and stay and stay. Find your spot in a busy café bar on the Stradun, or-der your caffeine treat and watch the world go by. Taj Mahal – Bosnian cuisine in the heart of Dubrovnik 8Located in the very

heart of the Old City of Dubrovnik the Taj Mahal restaurant offers delicious traditional Bosnian cui-sine and delicacies. Yes, you might have thought that we were talking about an Indian restaurant – nope this is Bos-nian all the way. A unique restaurant in Dubrovnik the Taj Mahal has over 13 years of creating homemade dishes with a twist, if you are look-ing for a restaurant with a difference, a break from the crowd, this should be your next stop. A real gem in the Old City, as soon as you step through the door you feel that you have been trans-ported to another country, the decoration is authentic and Ottoman style. “Wel-come to the little empire of pleasant aromas, rich fla-vours and a warm and soft soul,” reads the menu – they aren’t wrong. The menu is East meets West – shish skewers, Genghis Khan plat-ter, Ali Baba and of course cevapi. And the owners have a sense of humour – one dish is called the Cheerful Bos-nian and consists of a rolled rump steak with vegetables and cheese. And whilst the Taj Mahal is a haven for meat lovers they also have a rich

variety of vegetarian dishes. A few inside tips on how to order, let’s face it you prob-ably haven’t eaten in a Bos-nian restaurant before – so definitely try the flat bread (known as somun) also the cottage cheese ( kay ma k) as well as the ce-vapi (like rolled mincemeat sau-sages). These are all tradi-tional Bosnian dishes and fan-tastic. And after your meal make sure to order a Turkish coffee. It comes with all the “whis-tles and bells” and is one of the few restau-rants that still serve it – be prepared it is a little strong. The Taj Mahal proved so popular that in 2013 a sis-ter restaurant was opened in the Hotel Lero. The level and quality of food is just as good and as an added advan-tage you have plenty of park-ing spaces. We would recom-mend making a reservation in advance, in either loca-tion, as Taj Mahal has such a good reputation that it can be tough to get a table.

8Even after the euphoria of the 2018 World Cup has

died down slightly the Croatian President is still enjoying a ma-jority of support from citizens. Nova TV revealed who the most popular politicians in the coun-try were at the present time and Kolinda Grabar- Kitarovic was out in front with 55 percent of voters backing her work. On the other hand 38 percent do not sup-port her work. The second most popular politician in Croatia was not from any of the major politi-cal parties, Ivan Sinčić, who has been a member of parliament since 2015 and is the chairman of the party “Human Blockade.”

In the Nova TV survey he left a positive impression on 45 percent of voters. The Prime Minster, An-drej Plenkovic, from the ruling HDZ party didn’t do so well in the survey with only 38 percent of voters satisfied with his work so far. Although he did do consid-erably better than the leader of SDP, Davor Bernardic, who only got a 25 percent positive rating. When judged on a party by party demographic then again the most popular politician in HDZ was Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic with a massive 93 percent of support-ers, followed by Andrej Plenkovic with 85 percent and Milan Ban-dic with a 61 percent.

Dur-ing his visit to Dubrovnik he said for Nova TV that “I came to meet with the Prime Minister and I am very grateful that we can work together especially in Afghanistan, our armies are connected, and this is a good excuse to visit one of the most beautiful places in the world.”

8 In 1333 the Republic of Dubrovnik bought the Pelješac peninsular from the Serbi-

To keep their new prop-erty, the citizens of Dubrovnik immediately planned the construction of special fortifica-tions in Ston and Mali Ston that both defend-ed the towns and the peninsular of Pelješac. The walls of Ston are the largest construction venture outside the Republic of Dubrovnik. They consist of walls of Ston and Mali Ston, the Great Wall, the three fortresses, ten cir-cular, thirty-one square towers and a square and six semi-circular bastions. The height of

the walls is between 5 and 10 meters. Today around four and a half kilometres in length they connect Ston and Mali Ston and are one of the longest fortification systems in Europe. The walls of Ston were a massive architecture and construction feat. Originally 7000-meters long (22 965 ft.), they consist of several parts; the Stone city walls, the Mali Ston city walls and the Big wall with its three forts. Top tips for swimming IN DUBROVNIK

Sand beaches are rare so be prepared

8Although there are plen-ty of beaches in and

around Dubrovnik there are very, very few that are true sandy beaches. The vast ma-jority of beaches are either light shingle or pebbles. And whilst you will see the locals skip over the pebbles as if they were walking on a plush car-pet tourist’s feet don’t tend to be so hardened. Rubber shoes are a must, especially for small children, if you want to enter the sea with ease. You might stand out a bit from the crowd but scrabbling down the beach like your walking on broken glass will also look a little undignified.

Beware of black spines

8On many beaches, es-pecially isolated ones or

ones with many rocks, you will see small black circles lingering on the seabed. These are sea-urchins and are a sign that the sea water in that lo-cation is very clean. Howev-er there is a downside, if you accidentally tread on you’ll

have a nasty surprise. The urchins are basically balls of black needles that stick out in all directions. If you are un-lucky enough to stand on one the tiny needles will break off into your foot. Asides from be-ing very painful there is no further risk. The best way to extract these needles is to el-evate your foot and to rub it with plenty of olive oil; they will then slowly come out by themselves. Again wearing rubber shoes will protect you.

spending hours sunbathing. Gently, gently is the golden rule. You need to give your body some time to adjust to the cooler sea tempera-ture. Even though you may be swimming in the middle of the summer when the sea temperature is likely to be 25 degrees Celsius the difference in temperature from the sun is great. Ease yourself in and give yourself time, don’t for-get there are at least two or three cases every year of tour-ists suffering heart attacks in the sea. Why risk it.

sind nur sehr, sehr wenige davon richtige Sandstrände. Die große Mehrheit sind Kieselstrände. Und während Sie beobachten können wie die Einheimis-chen über die Kiesel schreiten als wäre es ein Plüschteppich, sind die Füße der Touristen zumeist nicht so gehärtet. Da-her sind Gummischuhe abso-lut notwendig, insbesondere für kleine Kinder, wen Sie ohne Mühen ins Meer gehen wollen. Vielleicht stechen Sie so etwas aus der Menge hervor aber den Strand entlangzustolpern als ob sie auf Glasscherben gehen ist andererseits auch nicht be-sonders würdevoll.

Hüten Sie sich vor schwarzen Stacheln

8An vielen Stränden, insbe-sondere an einsamen oder

solchen mit vielen Felsen, kön-nen Sie kleine, schwarze Kre-ise am Meeresboden sehen. Das sind Seeigel und sie sind ein Zeichen dafür, dass das Wasser an diesem Ort sehr sauber ist. Jedoch hat dies auch eine neg-ative Seite. Wenn Sie versehen-tlich auf einen Seeigel steigen, werden Sie eine böse Überra-

schung erleben. Die Igel sind im Grunde Bälle voller schwarzer Nadeln die in alle Richtungen wegstehen. Wenn Sie das Pech haben und auf einen drauf-steigen, brechen die Stacheln in Ihrem Fuß ab. Doch abgesehen davon, dass es sehr schmerzhaft ist, besteht keine weitere Gefahr. Die beste Art um diese Stacheln zu entfernen ist es, den Fuß hochzuhalten und ihn mit viel Olivenöl einzureiben; so kom-men Sie langsam von selbst raus. Auch hier kann Sie das Tragen von Gummischuhen schützen.

Meer, nachdem Sie stunden-lang in der Sonne gelegen haben. Hier lautet die goldene Regel “Sachte, sachte!”. 8Whilst the beach-es of Dubrovnik are

crowded through the sum-mer months there is always room to roll out your tow-el on Lokrum. Portoč is the largest quay on the is-land. Over time, it has been adapted and developed and here today is where the boats of the Lokrum Re-serve bring visitors to the island from the Old City harbour. Protected from rough seas and with rocks exposed to the sun but also with a cool shade, Portoč is an attractive Dubrovnik seashore. The southern part of the island touches

the wide open sea. Swim-ming in the clear and warm seas and sunbathing on the rocks, the stone slabs, are pleasures that are not eas-ily forgotten. Those who are not lovers of the open sea, especially parents with small children, often swim in the Dead Sea, a salt lake, which is connected and re-freshed with the living wa-ter of the sea. Lokrum is not only a swimmers paradise and an island full of inter-esting cultural and histor-ical monuments. In fact the entire island is a won-derful promenade which is protected by UNESCO.

8Es gibt einige legendäre Schwimm-plätze in Dubrovnik; Ich würde tat-

sächlich nicht unbedingt alle von ihnen als Strände bezeichnen sondern eher als Schwimmplätze. Einer davon ist die Buza Bar. Sie liegt außerhalb der Stadtmauern an steilen Klippen, die in die Adria hinab-fallen. Es ist kein Strand, vielmehr Felsen, aber es gibt Leitern, über die man leicht rausklettern kann. Das ist kein Platz für Familien, da man in sehr tiefes Wasser eintaucht. Ansonsten gibt es noch den le-gendären Banje Strand, mit seinem fan-tastischen Blick auf die Altstadt und die Insel Lokrum. Dieser Strand ist besser für Familien geeignet, da es hier viel seichtere Stellen gibt. Aber seien Sie vorsichtig, es kann hier starke Strömungen geben. Und schließlich der neue Strand in der Dubro-vniker Schwimmszene, der Coral Beach Club auf Babin Kuk. Dies ist ein sehr schi-cker Strandbereich mit einer schönen Bar und vielen Sonnenliegen und –Schirmen.

8There are a few iconic swimming spots in Dubrovnik; I wouldn’t nec-

essarily call them all beaches more swim-ming spots. The Buza bar is one of those, located outside of the city walls on sheers cliffs that drop down to the Adriatic. It isn’t a beach more like rocks, but there are ladders that let you climb out easily. This isn’t a spot for families as you dive into very deep water. Then the iconic Ban-je Beach with fantastic views over the Old City and the island of Lokrum, this is a better bet for families as there are some shallower waters. But be careful there can be strong currents. And finally the new beach on the Dubrovnik swimming scene, the Coral Beach Club on Babin Kuk. This is a very fancy beach area with a nice bar and lots of sun beds and sun umbrellas.

Dubrovnik is truly a goldmine for ar-chitect lovers; the stone façades of

the historic Old City carry many dif-ferent styles. Baroque, renaissance

and gothic are the most common styles inside the historic walls. In 1667

the Old City had one of its blackest days, an earthquake that devastated the entire city. So as the city was re-built after this black day you will see

lots of baroque architecture.

What museums are there in the Old City?

You could argue that the whole of the Old City is a museum, but a living mu-

seum. My advice would be to buy a Du-brovnik City Card, with this card you

will save not only money but also time. The card, which offers one – three –

or weekly options, will allow entrance into the vast majority of museums in the city as well as the Old City walls. For an additional cost, as they aren’t

included in the card, I would also sug-gest the Franciscan and Dominican

museums, the cathedral treasury, the War Photo Limited and the Synagogue.

8The Dubrovnik Sum-mer Festival is coming

to the end of its 69th edition and for over a month a lot of interesting artists have vis-ited Dubrovnik. One of them is Simon Mundy – a writer from Britain and Vice-Pres-ident of PEN Internation-al — Writers for Peace, Bled and sometimes – a journal-ist! He started as a director and then moved into writ-ing in his 20’s. He spent 20 years combining being an art journalist and writing books and poetry. Then he started the European Forum for the Arts and Heritage (now Cul-ture Action Europe). He has

worked a lot with UNESCO, especially with the Council of Europe on Culture and Con-flict areas, particularly in the Balkans and Ukraine. Now he lives in Scotland and spends a lot of his time writing books, but he found the time to visit our beautiful city and sharing interesting details about his life and his impressions about Dubrovnik and the Festival.

You dedicated your life to art and culture? It’s the only thing I’m good at! My mother was a painter and my grandfather was a writer. I’m useless when it comes to anything else – if you ask me to administrate anything, it will be illegal in two weeks.

That kind of life has taken you all around the world?Yes, I suppose. My son, who works for the United Nations, and I have a joke that he’s working for all the countries that I haven’t.

Why did you come to Dubrovnik?I’ve been an adviser to the European Festivals Associa-tion for years and I’ve been doing a profile on Dubrovnik for them. They wanted to talk to me about general issues. While I was there, I decid-ed to resurrect to my old ca-reer and cover it for one of the newspapers in Britain.

How did you like your ex-

perience? What did you see, what did you do?I went to events every night. Some good, some bad, which is normal for a festival. I didn’t do too much sightsee-ing because it was definitely a work trip, a very pleasant trip, but not a pleasure trip.

What did you like the most about the Dubrovnik?I had some delicious meals which were quite excellent and it was, oddly enough, quite fun to sit in the cafe’s, just watching the hordes of tourists come by. I felt like a local, I rather sat, watching them, thinking: ‘’I’m so glad that I’m not on that cruise ship!’’

You mentioned you enjoyed the food, do you have some favourite dishes?I always upset people in the Balkans saying that I prefer both Italian and Turkish food to Balkan food. I find food in northern Croatia and Slove-nia far too heavy and Ger-manic and Austrian. I much prefer it down south, when you got the olive oil, better wine and good salads. Gen-

erally, the further south I go along the Adriatic, the better the food becomes. And the wine is stunning!

What was your favourite part of the Dubrovnik Sum-mer Festival?The highlight of my visit was the concert at the Rector’s Palace by Andreas Scholl and Ensemble 1700, where you basically had nine soloists plus Scholl, who are to an ex-traordinary standard. To be that close to them, in that en-

vironment with surround-ings that were previous

to the time of the things they were performing, was a real joy!

Your impression of Dubrovnik Summer Festival is positive?

It’s a wonderful fes-tival and it’s been a

wonderful festival for many, many years! Like the city it-self, it had some difficult mo-ments, but I think it’s one of the ten most important festi-vals in Europe and I think it will continue to be that. It’s a place which has such an ex-traordinary history and such great venues and has abso-lutely no problem getting peo-ple to it. That combination is a winning formula!

How were you greeted in Dubrovnik? What do you think about the locals?I’ve never found anything but enormous welcomes in here in many, many years I’ve been coming here. I think that per-haps there is a difference now compared to 25 years ago, even 15 years ago, when I was here before. There was a sense of 1980’s and the break-up and the war. It felt like peo-

ple needed you to understand how hard things have been. Now, when Croatia is in the European Union, when eve-rybody moves without visas, it seems that many of these issues have gone away or are much quieter than they were. I find people much more re-laxed than they were.

How would you compare modern day Dubrovnik to times gone by?I was first here with the Council of Europe in 1993 and then I was back again two or three times in the 90’s. The last time I was here was in 2003. Even then, since it was before Croatia joined Europe-an Union, things were pret-ty tough. But they were get-ting back to normal and you got the sense that countries around also were beginning to re-join the family of na-tions in a way. Now, Croatia has really improved.

Do you like coming back to Croatia?I like bits of Croatia very much indeed. I like its coast-line, but I’m still not a com-plete convert to the interior. I think everywhere, from Pula down to border is fantastic. I like Opatija, which I think is an extraordinary city, very Austro-Hungarian, Rijeka too is amazing. I’ve never been to Split, which is weird, but it’s one of the way things work out. People invite you to the places and they haven’t yet in-vited me there!

Do you have any future plans regarding Croatia?We’ll see! I’ve got no long-term plans, but that’s typical when being a writer.

8The Old City of Dubrovnik is a self-contained city, a city

surrounded by ancient stone walls. The Stradun, the main street, runs through the centre of the city like an arrow. It is one of the busiest streets and other side streets run parallel with it. It runs from East to West and is around 300 metres in length. There entrances into the Old City, one at the East – Ploce Gate, one at the West – Pile Gate and to the North – Buza Gate. The busiest is Pile Gate where all the buses arrive, if you are coming by car then the Buza Gate is the easiest...but there are lots of steps. The Stradun is the lowest point in the whole city, eve-rything leads up from this street.

The Dubrovnik Synagogue is the oldest Sefardic synagogue still in use today in the world and the second oldest synagogue in Europe. It is said to have been established in 1352, but gained legal status in the city in 1408.

The Republic of Ragusa was a maritime republic centred on the city of Dubrovnik that existed from 1358 to 1808. It reached its commercial peak in the 15th and the 16th centuries, before being conquered by Napoleon’s French Empire and formally annexed by the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy in 1808. It had a population of about 30,000 people, out of whom 5,000 lived within the city walls. Its motto was “Non bene pro toto libertas venditur auro”, which translated from Latin means “Liberty is not well sold for all the gold”

Summer Music Festival Du-brovnik brings renowned names from the world music scene. On Tuesday, September 4, the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by Darrell Ang from Singa-pore, while clarinettist Mari-ja Pavlović will be the soloist. This extremely talented musi-cian started her career in Du-brovnik, and today she works abroad and collaborates with the greatest names in music. At this concert you will have the opportunity to hear the works of Dubrovnik compos-er Luke Sorkočević, Mozart, while the soloist will perform the Copland Concert for clar-inet. On Wednesday, Septem-ber 5, renowned musicians, vi-olinist Goran Končar, pianist Vasily Shcherbarkov and cel-list David Grigorian will host a concert in honour of the 145th anniversary of the birth of Rahmanjin and 100 years of Claude Debussy’s death. These musicians are also pro-fessors at the Laus Academy, which is held in Dubrovnik. On Thursday, September 6 it is time for something differ-ent. Composition of Bow vs Plectrum and jazz performer Maja Grgić will perform ethno jazz music. Filip Novosel and

Tihomir Hojsak play on dou-ble bass and on the tradition-al Croatian instrument, the tamburica. This will be a great combination of ethno mu-sic and jazz that Dubrovnik has not had the opportunity

to hear before. The week will end with a performance of the most sought-after Croa-tian pianists abroad, Martina Filjak. On Friday, September 7, this young Croatian musician will perform with the Du-brovnik Symphony Orchestra under the direction of South Korean conductor TaeJung Lee. The most famous Croa-tian pianist whom critics de-scribe as a “galvanizing force artist” will perform in Rapso-da in the blue, a musical mas-terpiece from American com-poser George Gershwin.

Located in front of the boutique hotel – Hotel More – the Restau-rant Tramuntana is an abso-lute gem on the Adriatic Sea. This is one of those restau-rants that from the moment you walk in you feel spoiled. The view is incredible, the service friendly and pro-fessional and the food deli-cious. the Spaghetti in shrimp and zucchini sauce could be in-teresting. The wine list is just as extensive and fea-tures some classic Croa-tian wines, both white and red as well as some bubbles. The desserts are where the sweet tooth lovers will go mad. The chocolate bomb is an explosion of white choc-olate, milk chocolate, dark chocolate and although it might sound a little rich it is fantastic. In fact, people come from far and wide just to try this dessert, and you can’t blame them. Basical-ly hot chocolate is poured over a ball of white choco-late until it fills the ball and melts it from the inside. You might want to go for a stroll after the explosion of choco-late as I’m pretty sure there are quite a few calories in-side. Crème brûlée, carob cake, Dubrovnik cake with bitter orange…the list goes on and on. And all of these desserts are prices around the 40 Kuna mark, so very reasonable for homemade cakes. All in all, I will be back at Tramuntana, the staff are friendly, the food is well presented, the prices are mid-range and the gen-eral setting is magnificent.

Korcula is tightly built on a promontory that guards the narrow sound between the island and the mainland. Building outside the walls was forbidden until the 18th century, and the wooden drawbridge was only replaced in 1863.

Korčula ist eng auf einem Landstrich gebaut, der in den Korčula-Kanal hinausragt. Bis zum 18. Jahrhundert war es verboten, außerhalb der Mauern zu bauen. Die ursprüngliche, hölzerne Zugbrücke wurde erst 1863 ersetzt.

Arboretum in Trsteno - Ten kilometres from Slano, in the direction of Dubrovnik, lies Trsteno where the Arboretum was founded out of the estate of the family of Ivan Gučetić in 1948. Their summer house and gardens were established in the 16th century as a harmonious melding of architecture and nature. Today, the Arboretum is a preserved venue of botanical architectural culture.

8The clarinettist Marija Pavlovic is one of the most gifted musicians of the new generation in Croatia. In

her hometown, Dubrovnik, together with the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra and great musicians from all over the world, she is going to perform in two cycles during 2018 - in April as well as in September. Oboist Tom Owen, bassoonist Pieter Nuytten, hornist Boštjan Lipovšek, vi-olinist Daniel Rowland, cellist Maja Bogdanović, dou-ble bassist Zoran Marković, pianist Martina Filjak and cellist Monika Leskovar are some of the musicians who will perform dur-ing Stradun Clas-sic. Being a lover of chamber music, clarinetist Mari-ja Pavlović will perform in sever-al chamber mu-sic concerts with the Chamber En-semble of the Du-brovnik Sympho-ny Orchestra as well.

8The end of August and almost whole September in Dubrovnik are reserved for great classical mu-

sic concerts. For the sixth year the Dubrovnik Sympho-ny Orchestra organizes the International Late Summer Music Festival Dubrovnik, which brings internationally acclaimed artists to the town. The music director of the festival is Austrian conductor Christoph Campestrini and this year festival takes place from 28 August until 21 September. This year’s program includes 13 events - symphony concerts, chamber music concerts as well as recitals that will take place in the Rector’s Palace atri-um. The Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra will host some of the most famous local and internationally acclaimed musicians.

The information and education centre is located on the trail of known cycling routes, and in the immediate vicinity there is also a rest area for cyclists. The educational centre is destined for all nature lovers and it is divided in specific themes (the World of Owls, Flora, Butterfly Corner, Fish, Amphibians and Reptiles, Singing Birds, Drava Fairies and Elves’ Woods), and the visitors can see the science and research station too. The centre is also a hostel with 34 beds.

ACTIVITIESCycling is one of many activities that Zadar County has to offer to adventure-seeking visitors. Marked cycling trails criss-cross the national and nature parks, as well as the islands, follow the coast and cut through the hinterland. 26 AUGUST - 22 SEPTEMBERMUSIC FESTIVAL - DU-BROVNIK IN LATE SUM-MERThe new festival that will last until mid-September was recently launched by the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra in order to keep the presence of music and cultural vibrancy in UNES-CO’s Dubrovnik after the Dubrovnik Summer Festi-val. The end of August and almost whole September in Dubrovnik are reserved for great classical music con-certs. For the seventh year the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra organizes the International Late Summer Music Festival Dubrovnik, which brings internation-ally acclaimed artists to the town. The music director of the festival is Austrian con-ductor Christoph Campes-trini and this year festival takes place from 27 August until 20 September 2019.
