It was wonderful to see our students have the opportunity to see the Solar Car built by the Sunswift team from the university of NSW at Dubbo Public School last week. A group of 20 students were supervised by Mrs Lunn and listened to how they built the car and get to see it first hand. Hopefully we can invite such projects from Sydney universities to be at South. Organisation for 2017: Classes have been organised. Students who have been selected for our Project Based Classes will have letters sent home today. All other classes in Stage 2 and Stage 3 will be parallel and in Stage groups. All other classes will be based upon years. Students with special needs will be transitioned over the next 2 weeks, meeting teachers or a group of teachers. On Wednesday 14th December reports, class allocation and equipment list will be sent home. As stated in a previous newsletter book packs will be available for children in Stages 2 and 3. All students must provide their own equipment. Students in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 will be provided with all resources as per usual. Presentation Evening for students in Stage 2 and 3 will be held tonight commencing at 7.30pm. All students who are receiving awards have had a letter sent home. Any child receiving an award MUST be in full summer school uniform. Year 6 students may wear their Year 6 shirts. Students from the school band and choir will be performing. All Year 6 students are required to attend. Students must remain for the entire evening and not leave after their award. The night has been organised to run smoothly and relatively quickly. School will end for all students on Friday 16th December. Our annual Talent Quest will start at 9.30am and parents are encouraged to come along and see the array of talent at our school. All staff will be involved in Staff Development Days on Monday 19th and Tuesday 20th December. All students are to return to school on Monday 30th January. Staffing: I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Alison Fuller our School Counsellor who is sadly leaving us for family reasons. Thank you Mrs Fuller for all of your work and support over the last 2 terms. We appreciated working with you. A new Counsellor will be announced early next year. Stop Work Meeting will be held this Thursday morning from 8.30am to 9.30am. Our school will not be affected—classes will begin at 9.25am as usual. Sorry for any inconvenience caused. The meeting will provide teachers with information on the new Staffing and Salary Agreement.
Cheers, Sharon

Sunswift Last Thursday Year Four students from 3/4L were lucky enough to visit Dubbo Public School. While we were there we got to meet the Sunswift team and their Solar Car—Eve. We learnt about the importance of sustainability and why we should use renewable resources. We got to make and race our own mini solar cars. We compared battery and solar power and it was proven that solar power is more efficient. We learned a lot and had heaps of fun doing it! Hazel Livingston + Ava Hosking

Positive Behaviour for Learning This week all stages have been discussing bullying and defining what bullying is. Bullying Is repeated verbal, physical, social or psychological aggressive behaviour by a person or group directed towards a less powerful person or group that is intended to cause harm, distress or fear. Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another—to imagine what it would be like to be in their shoes. Kids who have a high level of empathy tend to be well respected by their peers and are more often successful across academic and social domains. Research tells us that teaching children empathy can go a long way to decreasing the likelihood of bullying.
Year 6 Farewell The Year 6 Farewell will be held Tuesday 13th December in the School Hall from 6.30pm until 9.00pm. Traditionally our Year 5 students host the farewell and are required to bring in $5 to contribute to the running of the night. This money needs to be given to your child’s class teacher as soon as possible. Remember you wont need to pay next year as you will be the guest of honour. Parent’s are invited to come and help with food preparation and distribution on the night and then help to pack up the hall. Please let your child’s teacher know if you are able to help in this way.
