A closed TKPHC facebook members page has been set up for club info such as weights, comp info, lost dogs & dogs for sale. Subs are now due, and a 10 day stand down for weighing in a pig will apply from the end of May, which means if you pay your sub after the end of May you have to wait 10 days from paying to weigh in a pig.

Legal framework for gun buyback scheme announced 10 APRIL 2019 Police Minister Stuart Nash has announced a legal framework for the gun buyback will be established as a first step towards determining the level of compensation. It will include compensation for high capacity magazines and parts.

Mr Nash has outlined changes to the Arms (Prohibited Firearms, Magazines and Parts) Amendment Bill which will be debated during the committee stages of the legislation.

The Supplementary Order Paper reflects changes arising from the Select Committee process. It sets out the framework for dealing with the legal ownership of weapons, magazines and parts and the broad approach for determining payments.

“The regulations will create a framework to set compensation based on make, model and condition of the items. They will provide for rights of review and appeal,” Mr Nash says.

“Independent advisors will develop the price list for approval by Cabinet. A separate expert panel of advisors will be established to determine fair compensation for high value firearms.

“Police have also consulted extensively with Australian officials to familiarise themselves with the pitfalls and legal risks encountered there. Australia has had almost thirty amnesties and buyback schemes since the 1990s.

“The new measures make it clear that surrendered firearms will be the property of the Crown. Owners will be compensated for them, if the guns were lawfully obtained and the person had the appropriate firearms licence. Price lists will be set out in regulations which are now being drafted.

“This framework provides certainty for all participants in this process and sets out a clear appeal process if the compensation is disputed.

“A number of transitional measures are also being put in place to handle one-off questions. This includes weapons which were in transit from overseas when the ban took effect. Customs officials may deliver them to Police as part of the amnesty and buyback arrangement.

“Police are already collecting bank account details from people who are taking part in the gun amnesty. They are well placed to begin paying compensation once the scheme is confirmed. I can reassure firearms owners there will be plenty of time for them to hand over their weapons as part of the amnesty and to have their compensation processed under the buyback as well.

“The government has listened closely to official advice about the need to provide statutory authority for decisions and payments under the buyback scheme,” Mr Nash said.

The regulations are expected to be considered by Cabinet in May. If necessary, the amnesty can be extended by a month or so to run alongside the buyback.

Today we held our Annual TKPHC Kids' Hunt. We had a great turnout at the clubrooms at Hangatiki. Thanks to Mr & Mrs Mac for running the awesome obstacle/carrying competition & bringing all the gear for it, to Rob for running the target shooting competition & bringing the bales and meat, and to the team of judges for choosing our colouring comp winners. Many thanks also to Waitomo Adventures Ltd for the ice-blocks which went down a treat. Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to everyone for participating.

To Rose and Robbie and families on behalf of the NZ pig hunting fraternity and the Te Kuiti Pig Hunting Club, I offer our condolences with the passing of Bob. Have no doubt, Bob was a great ambassador for the sport of hunting wild pigs in NZ. He was passionate about pig hunting and took every instance to advocate on its behalf whether through his involvement as a contributor to the NZ Rod & Rifle magazine for over 20 years or as editor of the NZ Pig Hunter magazine or as a leader of the pig hunting competition Judging teams. He always ready to have a chat and or share his knowledge about matters around the sport. He would take on anything that would improve the image of pig hunting and pig hunters. To quote Ewan, Bob was a good mentor. My recollections are • Bob was in the forefront to set up the Te Kuiti PHC, becoming its first secretary and

newsletter editor. At this point we must acknowledge the immense support he had from his wife Liz. A lot of Bob’s success would not have happened without Liz’s help.

• Bob’s membership number was 007, when everyone else was trying to be 001, 002 etc, Bob was cunning enough to land 007 (James Bond).

• The original clubrooms were at Barry and Vida Aidridge’s and then came the opportunity to purchase the Hangatiki Hall. Bob was very much instrumental in the process of that purchase. It would be very fair to say, that without Bob’s input, the purchase would not have occurred. At that time, I cannot recall any other Pig Hunting Clubs in NZ owning their own clubrooms.

• Tired of all the differences in the rules of Pig Hunting competitions, Bob and Neville (Hoppy) Hopkinson and the late Thomas Takawae sat down in the Te Anga Tavern and drew up a set of rules for competitions that have gone on to be used as a reference for Pig Hunting Clubs around the country.

• Bob then went on to become the editor of the NZ Pig Hunting Magazine. In 2003, Bob and I and Jack Pihama were invited by the Govt to represent pig hunters in the debate around 1080 at a 3 day hui in Kaikoura.

• 2003 was also when Bob and I set up the Pig Hunting competition judging system sponsored by Ridgeline, this is for any pig hunting competition that wanted independent unbiased judges. Our first one was at Westshore, Hawkes Bay in 2004, starting at Easter, at MaruMaru Wairoa, Bob and I were away every second weekend judging some where between Northland to Motueka in the South Island, finishing the season at Bayview, Hawkes Bay at Labour weekend. it became so successful that at one stage we had 4 teams judging on the same weekend, some where in NZ. At that time, all the judges were TKPHC members. Jack Pihama and Dawn & Family, Greg Peck, Darryl, Cilla, Ewan, Tony, Blue Scott, Ike, Beef, Kevin to name a few, all gave a hand.

NEWS: Up to five dogs die on Interislander ferry, calls for urgent review of animal transport policies Thursday Feb 14 - ONE News - By Imogen Wells The SPCA is investigating an animal welfare incident on an Interislander ferry after as many as five dogs died on board earlier this week. Interislander crew discovered the dead dogs in an aluminium box at the back of a ute on Monday evening and immediately reported the case to police. Three other dogs, also found in the box, had to be euthanised due to the extent of their condition. Police have confirmed to 1 NEWS they attended the incident along with an SPCA inspector, but say as this is an investigation relating to animals the case is the responsibility of the SPCA. The SPCA said due to the nature of the investigation, it cannot provide comment. The Interislander ferry is a state-owned and operated service. The head of campaigns for animal rights group SAFE said the ferry company should hold responsibility for the care of animals on board as they cannot rely on owners to put their animal's welfare first. "SAFE is appalled that these dogs have had to endure such horrific conditions. No animal deserves to be put through this suffering," SAFE said. The group is now calling for an urgent review of both Interislander and Bluebridge's animal transport policies. It was real bloody hot and the ute was right in the middle of the deck - Marty O'Dea, witness Marty O'Dea, a passenger on the same ferry, said the box where the dogs were held didn't appear to have any proper ventilation. "It looked more like a tool box. It wasn't a proper dog box. It was real bloody hot and the ute was right in the middle of the deck. Nothing was open on the box," Mr O'Dea said. He said there were roughly six dogs involved and the owner appeared to be doing nothing to remedy the situation. "I wondered if he was in a state of shock. He was doing nothing." He said he witnessed the owner throw one of the deceased animals into the ute's tray, and claims there were three or four other dogs lying on the ground, not moving. Interislander's General Manager, Mark Thomspon, called the incident tragic for everyone involved and stressed the company has specific policies for people carrying pets in cars that have been in place for many years. "These are clearly stated on our website when booking travel. We make it very clear that keeping pets fed and watered is the owner's responsibility," he said. Mr Thompson said pets travel on the Interislander every day and other owners manage to care for their animals in a responsible way. Interislander ferry services have kennels available for hire on board. For $15 per crossing, the cages are in "shaded, well-ventilated" areas. Frequent user Liz Wilkinson said this service has improved. "When we first used the ferry [in 2017], we were placed in full sun and numerous dog owners were also upset about the lack of communications with dog care," she said. Ms Wilkinson said although Interislander have become better with their animal care since her first experience with them, the kennels don't appear to be cleaned often and once smelt of urine when she went to place the family dog in one. Mr Thompson said the system they currently have in place appears to work for responsible pet owners and the company has no plans to change its policy.
