LEARNING PLAN

LESSON PLAN SEQUENCE & PACING for 6th Grade

1. After everyone is in the classroom and seatedit will be time to introduce the lesson. To getstarted the students are going to be asked:“What does it mean to be a good citizen.” (5minutes)

2. Once the groups have had a chance to shareout what they think makes a person a goodcitizen, they will individually use the FrayerModels to come up with a definition, example,and non-example for digital citizen, and socialmedia. (12 Minutes)

3. As the class gets done with the Frayer Modelthe students will individually draw what theythink a good digital citizen looks like and what abad digital citizen looks like. (10 Minutes)

4. After the drawings are filled out with relevantexamples, it is going to be time for a discussionwith which to bridge students knowledge tosocial media. This bridge is going to be adiscussion that is based around a flow ofquestions. The ending point will be a person thatis willing to be responsible in their social mediause and advocate for others. Some of thequestions can be:

• “Which of the characteristics or traits dowe find most important in the picture?”

• “How did you show the appropriateamount of time that people should usesocial media and electronic devices.

• “What do we think of (list several studentgenerated characteristics)?”

LESSON PLAN SEQUENCE & PACING for 9th

Grade

1. After everyone is in the classroom andseated it will be time to introduce the lesson.To get started the students are going to beasked: “What does it mean to be an ethicaldigital citizen.” (5 Minutes)

2. Once the groups have had a chance to shareout what they think makes a person an ethicaldigital citizen, they will individually use theFrayer Models to come up with a definition,example, and non-example for ethical, citizen,digital citizen, and social media. (12 Minutes)

3. As the class gets done with the Frayer Modelthe groups will be brought back together towork on a Venn Diagram using Padlet.. The linkis:http://padlet.com/kolton_boyer/poupvebi6bmp. Students can individually add adjectives oneither side of a Venn Diagram that fit best withspecific words from their computers. Thisportion should take approximately five minuteswith demonstrations. (5 Minutes)

4. After the Venn Diagrams fill in with relevantexamples, it is going to be time for a discussionwith which to bridge students knowledge tosocial media. This bridge is going to be adiscussion that is based around a flow ofquestions. The ending point will be a personthat is willing to be responsible in their socialmedia use and advocate for others. 5. Once the students have reached the pointthat they acknowledge that reportinginappropriate comments is important they wouldbreak into groups to review the reporting policiesof Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, and Instagram.(10 minutes)

• Students at the middle school levelshould look for ways to help withreporting to parents and teachers.

• Students also need to understand theimportance of report not retaliate, andways to bring themselves to that point.

6. Assessment. To wrap up the class thestudents will be asked to write a reflectivestatement with the following prompts: How canyou become a good digital citizen? What areappropriate uses of electronic devices and socialmedia. (8 minutes)

• “Which of the characteristics or traits dowe find most important in the diagram?”

• “How did you show the appropriateamount of time that people should usesocial media and electronic devices inyour diagram

• “What do we think of (list severalstudent generated characteristics)?”◦ Ideally the student generated

characteristics would includereporting.

If it doesn’t then asking, “To what extentis reporting inappropriate behavior aneeded characteristic?” (10 minutes)

5. Once the students have reached the pointthat they acknowledge that reportinginappropriate comments is important theywould break into groups to review the reportingpolicies of Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, andInstagram. (10 minutes)

• Students in the high school should lookfor ways that they can start to handlesituations by themselves, but still knowways to reach out to parents andeducators.

6. Assessment. To wrap up the class thestudents will be asked to write a reflectivestatement with the prompt: How can youbecome an ethical digital citizen? “Why is itimportant for us to be self advocates.” (8minutes)
