By the grace of Allah Almighty, the
Department of Chemical Engineering
CIIT Lahore got accredited by PEC th(Pakistan Engineering Council) on 25
March 2009. It is indeed an achievement
for any educational institution on
national level. The entire team of the
department including HoD, Dean
Engineering, advisors, faculty members
and laboratory staff was determined to
get the accreditation so it was set as a
priority resolution in the very start of
this year. It was made possible by the
dedicated efforts of faculty members
who worked day and night specially to
improve the state of the art laboratories
by giving special input in the design and
fabrication of equipment. It could not
be possible without the in-depth
supervision of team leader Dr.
Moinuddin Ghauri, who took special
interest in the accomplishment of the
accreditation process. Director CIIT Dr.
Shaukat Ali Hayat was also very keen
about it and contributed as much as he
could in achieving the goal.
PEC Engineering accreditation and
Quality Evaluation Committee (EA & QEC)
has been specially formed to carry out
assessment of various engineering
programmes through a systematic and
well documented process. It works while
a l igned with Higher Educat ion
Commission (HEC) of Pakistan.
Because of PEC's stringent and high
standards, it takes unflinching efforts to
meet the criteria. PEC is the only
government body in Pakistan which
recognizes the engineering degree
PEC Accreditation A Giant Leap PEC Visit to Chemical Engineering Department awarding educational institutions on
the basis of tough criteria including
faculty profile, lab standards, financial
resources, human resources, pay scales,
facilities available in the department
and many other factors. PEC gives
membership to only those engineers
who have been awarded degrees from
the accredited institutions after passing
through a long and competitive process.
It is worth mentioning here that
chemical engineering department has a
u n i q u e s t a t u s o f g e t t i n g t h e
accreditation before even the first
batch has passed out.
This is just the beginning and there are
miles to cover. The whole team of
Chemical Engineering Department is
committed to grow rapidly and to
maintain the title of PEC Accreditation.
thThe Workshop on MatLab, arranged by the Department of Mathematics, was held on 26 th– 30 January 2009 at COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT) – Lahore. The

CISCO Academy
Department of Chemical
Engineering
The department of CS has been
successfully running CISCO academy
courses for the last two years under the
able supervision of Mr Naeem Akhtar
who is also the in charge of Network
Operation Centre (NOC) of CIIT Lahore. He
has passed the test to become a CISCO
Academy teacher.
A second track of CISCO academy was
begun in the spring semester of 2009 at
the Electrical Department of CIIT. This
track carries changes which will be more
suitable to EE students. The director
took acute interest in understanding
the difference between the two tracks
and gave his go-ahead.
Worldwide, most of the recent research
work is being carried out employing the
most recent research methodologies
including mathematical modeling and
simulation. The department of chemical
engineering has always focused on
research activities and in order to keep
pace with the current international
trends, Mathematical Modeling &
Simulation Research Group (MMSRG) has
been founded at CIIT, Lahore. The main
objective and mission is to locally
develop the infrastructure where by a
platform may be provided for future
research work in the field of modeling
and simulation.
Initially, MMSRG shall be focusing on
training the respected faculty by
conducting workshops and symposia.
Once the roots are firmly grounded,
further work or application of
knowledge gained may be carried out.
Finally, student projects in the various
fields may be initiated. Another
offshoot that may be possible is the
postgraduate program of COMSATS in
the field of Chemical Engineering where
this research group shall provide ample
room of international research
collaboration and interdisciplinary
research.
Embarking on the vision laid by HEC, the
department of chemical engineering is
all set to launch the postgraduate
program. The concept paper was
drafted by Engr. Aqeel Ahmad Bazmi
and was put up in the 6th Board of
studies (BoS) meeting. The program was
unanimously approved and forwarded
to Board of Faculties. The department
envisions starting the program from
the next semester and already has some
potential candidates from industry and
academia.
Realizing the importance of chemical
engineering, the Masters program (MS
Leading to PhD) in chemical engineering
will provide knowledge in subjects
which are of importance both for
further developing today’s and
tomorrow’s process industry. The
graduate program is designed to
a c c o m m o d a t e e n g i n e e r i n g
professionals who are seeking to
broaden their knowledge and deepen
their technical skills to solve problems
of local chemical and processing
industry with greater responsibility.
The PhD part consists of three major
parts: the first year is devoted to
coursework and the next two years are
devoted to research while the third part
consists of successive seminars to be
given by scholars during the research
period. In addition, an integrative
project combines the research and
management portions of the program.

soul in peace.
The Department of Architecture &
Design CIIT has launched a Degree
program B.Des: Bachelor of Design. The
B.Des course is a four year full time
course of 138 credits. Students will be
encouraged to experiment and think
creatively and critically. The approach is
analytical and diagnostic with emphasis
on solving Design problems through the
development of original and often
surprising solutions, rather than simply
focusing on technical methods or
applying formulaic solutions. The
students will define their goals,
experiment with ideas and challenge
current practices to produce work that
is outside the commercial constraints.
After a first common foundation year,
the students will be offered a choice of

The connection between 23 April and
books was first made in 1923 by
booksellers in Catalonia, Spain as a way
to honour the author Miguel de
Cervantes who died on that day. In 1995,
UNESCO decided that the World Book
and Copyright Day would be celebrated
on this date because of the Catalonian
festival and because the date is also the
anniversary of the birth and death of
William Shakespeare, the death of Inca
Garcilaso de la Vega and Josep Pla, the
birth of Maurice Druon, Vladimir
Nabokov, Manuel Mejía Vallejo and
Halldór Laxness.

supporting and celebrating WBD by
encouraging students to read and
promoting reading-related activities.
Comsats focuses not only on improving
students reading ability but also on
developing a love of reading.
