A Grade

Darwin Chinese Recreation Club soared to the top of

the ladder, thanks to a thrilling 6-5 victory over the

plucky Crocodiles on Wednesday night. After the two-

week hiatus, it was DCRC who finished the stronger of

the two teams as Oscar van Cuylenborg (DCRC) put on

a clinic to defeat Mitchell Bedford in the deciding

rubber (3-0). Earlier in the match, Brodrick On (DCRC)

clinched a crucial rubber when he outgunned hard-

hitter Michael Yaxley in a five-set slugfest to triumph,

12-14, 11-6, 11-9, 7-11, 11-3. For the Crocs, Mick got

his own five-set win when he edged Kelvin On in a

classic contest, 3-11, 11-7, 5-11, 17-15, 11-6.

Jets got their third match win when they held off an all-

substituted Roadies outfit. Pham Luan (Jets) held his

nerve to claim the deciding rubber over Chris

Depasquale, preventing an embarrassing loss to a

team filled with B Grade players. For the Roadies,

Mohammad Ahmed made his debut in A Grade with a

couple of singles wins, including an intriguing victory

over Brandon Porter in a rubber that set up the

decider, 11-9, 11-7, 6-11, 13-15, 11-9.

The Power have surged to a 7-4 win over the previously

undefeated Vikings, and at the same time broke their

three-match losing streak. John Pudney led the way

with three singles wins, while Rick Gibson (Power)

claimed his first singles win of the season when he

downed John Langdon in four sets.

Lastly, Marrara Mozzies have squared their win-loss

ledger with a clutch defeat of the winless Champions.

Elfrida Kalich set up the win when she won her three

singles, while Maricor Sarceda got the team home with

a 9-11, 11-5, 11-5, 11-8 victory over Russell Holden.

B Grade

The Mozzies stunned Medicins Sans Revers, winning

their first match of the season while inflicting their

opposition’s first loss on Thursday evening. Despite Sze

Yen Tay (MSR) winning three singles, it was not enough

to get her team over the line as Mo Zhong and Shino

Joy (Mozzies) clinched the deciding doubles rubber

over Sze and Jui Lark.

New Crocs front-man Mohammad Ahmed stole the

show as he dragged his team over the line against a

competitive Champions team. Roy Anderson

(Champions) made a winning debut by edging Ollie

Wright, 8-11, 11-6, 10-12, 11-9, 11-7.

Vikings remained on top of the ladder after a

comprehensive victory over DCRC. John Langdon was

too good in the singles, while Joan Barton had a

comeback win over Zoltan, 11-8 in the fifth set.

C Grade

On Tuesday, Crocodiles remain the team to beat when

they bested the Roadies in an entertaining affair. Geni

O’Brien (Crocs) led by example with three singles wins,

including a nail-biter against Steve Howe, 11-9, 9-11,

11-9, 6-111, 15-13. Another highlight for the Crocs was

Sebastian Lai’s gutsy comeback to deny Dallas Graetz,

3-11, 6-11, 12-10, 11-9 ,11-8.

Mozzies moved to second on the ladder with a narrow

win over the Vikings. Graeme Perkins (Mozzies) won

three singles, while the Vikings kept the final score

respectable when they won both doubles rubbers in

three sets.

DCRC are on the board at last after they overcame the

Champions. The previous winless team got their first

taste of success thanks to dominant singles wins to

round out the fourth week of competition.

Club Committee: We need YOU!

The Problem

I (Chris Depasquale) have been on selection panels to

select staff and/or promote people in their workplaces

for three dozen years. The same basic questions trip up

applicants time after time.

“Have you ever been responsible for handling cash or

spending money that doesn’t belong to you?”

“Your application says teamwork is a strength of yours.

Can you give us an example of how you facilitated

teamwork to achieve a desired goal?”

“Provide the panel with an example of your

contribution to a high-level strategic decision.”

The answers from 90% of all those people seeking a job

or a promotion are downright embarrassing.

The Solution

Anybody who spent 12 months on the committee of

the DTTA would slam-dunk those questions at a

selection interview, whether it was their first job at

Macca’s or a half a million a year Executive role, and

would have a number of referees who could attest to

their claims.

DTTA Needs

Three of our long-standing committee members are

unable to continue beyond the AGM on 19 May. TY Lee

is standing down due to regular travel away from

Darwin while Mazhar Khan and Andrew Barton are

unable to continue due to work/business

commitments.

When I attended my first DTTA committee meeting in

early 2012 the conversation went like this:

Committee Member (who, to protect the guilty, shall

remain nameless, but I can tell you his initials are TY

Lee): So, Chris, what are you good at?

Me: Say, what??

TY: You must be good at something. We know it is not

table tennis, because we have seen you play…

I gave a brief CV, and they found some ways I could

contribute to the work of the committee using my

existing strengths and abilities.

This time around the DTTA is keen to find people to join

the committee with some skills in specific fields. We

know what we need/want to do and we need more

people to help us get it done. We need to find one

person who has experience in spending money,

another with some interest and/or skills in

computing/IT and a third person who is liked by other

people.

Position Vacant: General Committee Member. You

must be able to demonstrate prior experience in

spending money. (If you have never spent money

please skip to the next position vacant.) Each year the

DTTA spends thousands of dollars on all sorts of

physical things: bats, balls, trophies, barbecues,

printers and so on. If you think you would be good at

managing this please join the committee.

Position Vacant: General Committee Member. You

must be able to demonstrate a willingness to work with

computers and information technology. (If you have

never touched a keyboard or smart-phone please skip

to the next position vacant.) In the next twelve months

the DTTA will be automating most of its interactions

with members, from registration to payment of match

fees, to attendance at junior training programs and so

on (using an existing platform already in use by other

table tennis and sporting programs). We need

somebody to take responsibility for guiding us through

that process.

Position Vacant: General Committee Member. You

must be liked by other people. (If you are not liked by

other people but would like to be liked by other people

we can teach you how to achieve this.) This person will

oversee our transition from the present situation

where nearly everything that needs to be done around

the club falls on a handful of people to a brave new

world where many of our members contribute to the

things that need to be done to improve our club.

What do you do now?

If you have never spent any money or touched a

keyboard and nobody likes you please report to Chris

Depasquale; only he would know what to do with such

a person. Everyone else should report to Gavin

Gerschwitz who can answer any questions you might

have and help you complete the DTTA Committee

nomination form. The DTTA Committee meets once a

month for 1-2 hours.

Northern Territory Open 2019 The NT Open is scheduled for Sunday 9 June 2019 in Alice Springs (the following Mon is a public

holiday).

The Committee is considering paying for a 12 seater van hire IF there is sufficient interest by

DTTA members in attending.

There is also the potential (dependent on interest) to see if our Alice Springs friends could

provide lodgings at ASTTA member houses. Alternatively, accommodation can be arranged by

attendees directly.

A rough initial itinerary for the Road Trip is:

0300 Saturday 8 June depart Darwin

1800 Saturday 8 June arrive Alice

Sunday 9 June compete in NT Open

0300 Monday 10 June depart Alice

1800 Monday 10 June arrive Darwin

Advantages:

Great ‘Road Trip’ and team experience.

Excellent engagement and participation with the Alice Springs TTA.

No time off work/school required for Mon-Friday workers.

Extremely cheap (potentially free) transport / accommodation.

Respond ASAP (and by Friday 10 May at the latest) to [email protected].

Provide:

1. Confirmation that you would like to occupy a seat in the van (or if more than 1 – state the

number).

2. Whether you wish to source your own accommodation or, alternatively, are interested in

seeing if lodgings with ASTTA are available.

3. Provide your mobile phone number.
