In Creative Expression last month, the Munchkins explored
the creative work of Charles G. Shaw, author and illustrator
of the story It Looked Like Spilt Milk. Inspired by his
unique, yet simple illustrations, Sarah used a mixture of
shaving cream and glue to create her own 'cloud shapes!'
Our May Theme:
SPRING IS ALL AROUND YOU!
Teddy Bears' Picnic:Saturday, May 19th
WHO: All Kinder Works children & their families
are invited to a celebration at Kinder Works!

special SHOW at 1 pm, and more surprises,
including a raffle (for a free week of camp)!
WHEN: Drop in anytime between 11 AM and 2 PM
on Saturday, May 19th. (Raindate: Sunday, May 20th)
WHY: To celebrate a wonderful school year with
a day of family fun!
Mark your calendar now, and watch your email for our special invitation!
Spring arrived weeks ago (on March 20th), but in May it
is bursting out all over. It is time for us to talk about bugs,
bullfrogs, and butterflies... and to discover the science, beauty,
poetry, and stories of nature's renewal! With Spring, the sun
has returned, and we will study the new life that it brings:
plants that grow from seeds, bulbs, beans, pits, and grains...
as well as plants that awaken from dormancy... animals born
alive and well, animals that arrive in eggs, animals that
transform in curious life-cycles, and animals that awaken
from a long Winter's nap. We'll examine the creepy crawly
world of insects that come around our yards and 'bug' us,
and, of course, we'll admire the flowers that bloom in the
Spring. With great appreciation for the glory of our natural
world, we'll be energized by the inspirational words of our
year's theme song, "Colors of the Wind":
"Come run the hidden pine trails of the forest;Come taste the sun-sweet berries of the Earth.
Come roll in all the riches all around you,
And for once, never wonder what they're worth."
The sun is out, the sky is blue, the air is warm; it's a perfect time to bury
our toes (and feet... and legs...) in the sand!
Registration for the 2012-2013 School Year
Registration is well underway, and is now open
to the public. THANK YOU to all who participated in
our priority registration period! If you handed in your
renewal to keep your child's current schedule, you are
automatically confirmed; please look for written
confirmation in your child's mail file. If you handed in your plan to change your
child's current schedule for next September, or if you
registered for Private Kindergarten or Kindergarten
Enrichment, enrollment will be processed in the order
received, on a first-come, first-served basis, as long as
the schedules are available.
Everyone will receive written confirmation of
enrollment status beginning the week of April 30th,
or a phone call regarding wait-list status. The
Teaching Staff and Executive Board consider each
student’s placement very carefully; class placements
will not be made until late summer. Thank you!
Our "Fabulous Authors" theme allowed us to recreate the
wonderful worlds that grace the pages of so many storybooks as
we enjoyed dramatic play in Creative Expression. Our Rainbow
Class discovered that a little imagination and a lot of teamwork
can build incredible 'storybook castles!'
EQ Show & Tell:
Thursday & Friday, May 24th & 25th, "Spring has sprung and so have I!
Look how I've grown!"
Our “Spring is All Around You” theme inspires us to
look with awe and wonder at seeds that sprout and
bloom into flowers, and crawling caterpillars that
transform into beautiful butterflies. At the same time,
we can look with amazement at our own growth! We
have grown physically, cognitively, emotionally, and
socially; it’s time to look at this growth with a sense of
pride. For Show & Tell this month, please help your
child select something that shows how s/he has grown
(an example of a new skill that s/he learned, a picture
of a new friend or sibling, shoes worn when s/he was
younger but that no longer fit, etc.) This is a great
activity for strengthening self-concept and improving
self esteem; it helps our children identify and
appreciate their own growth and gives them wonderful
feelings of accomplishment!
During letter “Uu” week in Language Arts, the Bumble Bees
enjoyed an outdoor lesson! They traveled 'up, up, and away' as
they 'flew to the universe' with Hedgie Hedgehog, retelling the
story Hedgie Blasts Off! by Jan Brett. Mrs. Shumock dressed for
the part, reenacting a scene from the book’s conclusion where
Astronaut Hedgie fixed ‘Big Sparkler,' a huge water-spouting
volcano which had failed to erupt and caused all the space
flowers to wilt on planet Mikkop... this unique story led our
Bumble Bees on quite an exciting adventure!
During our "submarine crawl," which was part of an
'underwater' obstacle course set to the music of the Beatles,
Bumble Bees MacKenzie, Christopher, and Emily helped
'paint' our 'submarine' yellow. This Gym & Music activity was
a tribute to musician/composer Sir Paul McCartney, who
wrote the famously fun song "Yellow Submarine!"
THANK YOU
to the Families of Kinder Works!
In April, Kinder Works
families filled 9 overflowing
baskets of pajamas and books for
local children in need!
THANK YOU for 'paying it
forward,' and for helping us to
complete our mission of teaching
young children that they can help
care for others, and that everyone
can make a difference! You helped
bring a smile to a child in need,
providing them with a warm and
comfortable sleep filled with sweet
dreams of people who care!
Remember: being KINDER works!
Memorial Day Holiday:Kinder Works is closed on Monday, May 28th for the Memorial Day Holiday. We hope you enjoy
your long weekend!
The Teddy Bears enjoyed story time with Cael’s dad, who
participated as a 'Guest Reader' during our “Fabulous Authors”
theme last month. The children loved listening to read-alouds by
their friends and family members!
What a WACKY week! Mrs. Baty, Mrs. Lewis, and some of our
Kinder Works friends celebrated Wacky Wednesday and
Thursday with some wildly wacky outfits!!
Thank You Guest Readers: We'd like to extend a sincere thank you to all of our
wonderful storytellers; the children were truly enriched by your participation!
During our
"Fabulous

Welcome Warm Weather
Fun in the sun means it's time for sunscreen! As
the weather gets warmer, we spend more time outside.
Please dress your child appropriately for outside play,
wearing sunscreen. Also, please check your child's cubby
to be sure he/she has a change of clothes suitable for the
season!
Per our Parent Handbook, our teachers will reapply
sunscreen to full day children, using Waterbabies PURE &
SIMPLE, SPF 50 by Coppertone (a hypoallergenic, tear
free formula); we welcome parents to send a bottle of this
type of sunscreen to school with your child. If your child
CANNOT use this particular brand of sunscreen due to
medical reasons, please notify the Director in writing and
supply alternative sunscreen. THANK YOU!
Like the winsome
inchworm in the
story Inch by Inch
by Leo Lionni, the
Rainbows/BBIIs
practiced their
measuring skills in
Math & Science!
Kenny used a ruler
to measure various
objects around the
classroom; he
measured a
different book by
Leo Lionni and
discovered that it
was 9 inches wide.
During our
"Fabulous

theme in Gym

the "Magic

on the
playground and

Language and literacy skills
flourished with our April theme,
"FABULOUS AUTHORS"
While Mrs. Lepping narrated, Joe, Eve, Aria, and Prosper
used character masks to act out Jan Brett’s story, The
Umbrella. Through this role-play experience, the Teddy
Bears demonstrated their understanding of story
sequencing and reinforced their awareness of story
elements (i.e., main character, setting, problem and
solution). What an authentic way to develop story sense
and an appreciation for literature!
During Letter “Vv” week, the Teddy Bears listened to various Eric Carle
books about bugs, including The Very Busy Spider. Andrew, Daniel, and
Brady practiced sequencing and following multi-step directions by
completing pages that retold the story as they created their very own
"Very Busy Spider" booklets.
During a
"hands-on"
storytelling
experience,
Mrs. Myers
read Hedgie’s
Surprise (by
Jan Brett)
while each
Munchkin
used their
own "story
props" to act
out the story
as she read.
In conjunction
with our
"Fabulous
Authors" theme,
and dressed for
our "wacky days,"
Mrs. Myers and
the Munchkins
read Wacky
Wednesday by
one of our
favorite authors:
Theo LeSieg,
a.k.a Dr. Suess!
Inspired by
the story Let’s
Make Rabbits!,
a fable by Leo
Lionni, Clara
first used
scissors to
design her own
"cut-paper"
rabbit. Next,
just like in the
story, she used
a pencil to
create a "pencil-
drawn" friend
for the rabbit
she'd made
with scissors.
"FABULOUS AUTHORS"
inspired our artistic expression
and dramatic play in April
Last month the Rainbows learned about the art of Eric Carle, an
author/illustrator who uses a "Matisse-like" style in his children's
book illustrations, a technique that we call “drawing with scissors.”
To create her own "Eric Carle-style" garden, Bella cut different
flower shapes from colorful texturized paper.
Andrew
painted a
colorful leaf
for his
chameleon,
giving it "A
Color of His
Own." After
completing
the leaf, he
painted his
chameleon to
match, like in
the story by
Leo Lionni.
After viewing the pictures of the story Millions of Cats
by author/illustrator Wanda Gag, Madelyn created her
own black and white artwork using a similar style.

"Fabulous

our "wacky days,"
Mrs. Myers and
the Munchkins

Wednesday by
one of our
favorite authors:
Theo LeSieg,
a.k.a Dr. Suess!
After discussing how the mice prepared for the changing seasons in
the story Frederick by Leo Lionni, Sydney and Sarah explored the 4
seasons of the year and placed pictures of seasonal objects and
activities into the corresponding season.
After learning about unique erupting springs called
geysers, like "Big Sparkler" in the story Hedgie Blasts Off
by Jan Brett, the Rainbows/BBII’s "had a blast"
experimenting with fizzy soda and Mentos candy. Mrs.
Hoey placed a piece of Mentos candy in a bottle of soda,
which created "a blast" similar to those in the story. Wow!
Amanda
practiced
one-to-one
correlation
by matching
one spider to
each spider
web, like the
single spider
who spun a
web in The
Very Busy
Spider by
Eric Carle.
While exploring the animals in Annie and the Wild
Animals by Jan Brett, the Munchkins compared wild
animals and pets. Then Brendan sorted pictures of
animals into groups by deciding if the animals were wild
or if they could be pets.
Our April theme led us to explore
and discover worlds created by
"FABULOUS AUTHORS"
We sang, moved, and grooved
through our "FABULOUS
AUTHORS" theme in April!
John Philip Sousa, a.k.a. “The March King,” was an important
musician, conductor and composer of American marching
music. Guided by Mrs. Lewis, Anica enjoyed a hands-on
experience with the 'Sousaphone,' named for Mr. Sousa’s
influence on its design.
The Bumble Bees enjoyed a little "bunny hopping" to the Springtime
favorite, “Here Comes Peter Cottontail.” Singing while engaged in
aerobic activity, like hopping, requires an extra boost of "lung power,"
and is therefore a more beneficial form of exercise; it's fun, too!
The Rainbows raced across the playground to find and
collect eggs at our annual Spring Egg Hunt!
While exploring the animals in Annie and the Wild
Animals by Jan Brett, the Munchkins compared wild
animals and pets. Then Brendan sorted pictures of
animals into groups by deciding if the animals were wild
or if they could be pets.
With great composers as our musical focus in April, Wolfgang
Amadeus Mozart was featured in Gym & Music. After the
Bumble Bees viewed the Metropolitan Opera’s performance of
Mozart’s “The Magic Flute,” June and MacKenzie demonstrated
their newly-found operatic vocal techniques, while Jonathan
held tight to the power of the “magic flute!”
