SECTION 3 IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

When using the telephone equipment, basic safetyprecautions should always be followed to reduce the risk offire, electrical shock, and injury to persons, including thefollowing:

1. Read and understand all instructions.

2. Follow all warnings and instructions marked on theproduct.

3. Unplug this product from the wall outlet beforecleaning. Do not used liquid cleaners or aerosolcleaners. Use a dry cloth for cleaning.

4. Do not use this product near water; for example, neara sink or in a wet area.

5. Do not place this product on an unstable cart, stand,or table. The telephone can fall, causing seriousdamage to the unit.

6. To protect the product from overheating, do not blockor cover any slots or openings in the base unit. Thisproduct should never be placed near or over aradiator or heat register. This product should not beplaced in a built-in installation unless the properventilation is provided.

7. This product should be operated only form the type ofpower source indicated on the marking label.

8. Do not allow anything to rest on the power cord. Donot locate this product where the cord will bedamaged by persons walking on it.

9. Do not overload wall outlets and extension cords, asthis can result in the risk of fire or electrical shock.

10. Never push objects of any kind into this product throughthe base unit slots, as they may touch dangerousvoltage points or short out parts that could result in arisk of fire or electrical shock. Never spill liquid of anykind on the product.

11. To reduce the risk of electric shock, do not disassemblethis product. Contact qualified service personnel whensome service or repair work is required. Opening orremoving covers may expose you to dangerousvoltages or other risks. Incorrect reassembly can causeelectric shock when the appliance is subsequentlyused.

12. Unplug this product from the wall outlet and referservicing to qualified service personnel under thefollowing conditions:

When the power supply cord is damaged orfrayed.

If liquid has been spilled onto the product.

If the product has been exposed to water or rain.

If the product does not operate normally whenfollowing the operating instructions. Adjust onlythose controls that are covered by the operatinginstructions. Improper adjustment of othercontrols can result in damage, and will oftenrequire extensive work by a qualified technician torestore the product to normal operation.

Caution:To reduce the risk of fire or injury to persons by the battery,read and follow these instructions.

1. Use only the appropriate type and size battery packspecified in the manual.

2. Do not dispose of the battery pack in a fire, the cellmay explode.

3. Do not open or mutilate the battery pack. Releasedelectrolyte is corrosive and can cause damage to theeyes or skin. It may be toxic if swallowed.

4. Exercise care in handling the battery in order not toshort the battery with conducting materials such asrings, bracelets, and buttons. The battery orconductor can overheat and cause burns.

5. Charge the battery pack provided with or identified foruse with this product only in accordance with theinstructions and limitations specified in the instructionmanual provided for this product.

6. Observe proper polarity orientation between thebattery pack and battery charger.

Privacy

Cordless telephones are radio devices. Communicationsbetween the handset and base of the cordless telephone areaccomplished by means of radio waves which are broadcastover the open airways. Because of the inherent physicalproperties of radio waves, communication can be received byradio receiving devices other than your own telephone unit,consequently, any communications using the cordlesstelephone may not be private.

SECTION 4 IMPORTANT ELECTRICAL CONSIDERATIONS

Warning!Do not attempt to unplug any appliance during an electricalstorm.

Unplug all electrical appliances when you know an electricalstorm is approaching. Lightning can pass through yourhousehold wiring and damage any device connected to it. Thistelephone is no exception.

Caution:Changes or modifications to this product not expresslyapproved by NEC America, Inc., or operation of this productin any way other than as detailed by this manual, could voidyour authority to operate this product.

Range

The new telephone is designed to achieve a maximum range ofup to 150 feet (depending upon the environment) bytransmitting and receiving according to the highestspecifications set forth by the FCC. We have rated this phoneto operate at a maximum distance with the qualification that therange depends upon the environment in which the telephone isused. Many factors limit range, and it would be impossible toinclude all of the variables in our rating. The maximum rangerating of this telephone is meant to be used as a means ofcomparison against other range claims.

Telephone Line Problems

The FCC has granted the telephone company the right todisconnect service in the event that your telephone causesproblems on the telephone line. Also, the telephone companymay make changes in facilities and services which can affectthe operation of your unit. However, your telephone companymust give adequate notice in writing prior to such actions toallow you time for making necessary arrangements to continueuninterrupted service.

If you are having trouble with your telephone service, youmust first disconnect your telephone to determine if it is thecause of your problem. If you determine that it is the cause,you must leave it disconnected until the trouble has beencorrected.

Radio Interference

Radio interference may occasionally cause buzzing andhumming in your cordless handset, or clicking noises in thebase unit. This interference is caused by external sourcessuch as TV, fluorescent lighting, or electrical storm. Your unitis NOT DEFECTIVE. If these noises continue and are toodistracting, check around your office to see what appliancesmay be causing the problem. In addition, we recommend thatthe base not be plugged into a circuit that also powers a majorappliance because of the potential of interference. For bestperformance, ensure that the antenna on the base unit is fullyextended.

In the unlikely event that you consistently hear other voices ordistracting transmissions on your telephone, you may bereceiving radio signals for another cordless telephone or othersource of interference. If you cannot eliminate this type ofinterference, you need to change to a different channel.

Finally, it should be noted that some cordless telephonesoperate at frequencies that may cause interference to nearbyTVs and VCRs. To minimize or prevent such interference, thebase of the cordless telephone should not be placed near oron top of a TV or VCR. If interference is experienced, movingthe cordless telephone farther away from the TV or VCR willoften reduce or eliminate the interference.

More than One Cordless Telephone

If you want to use more than one cordless telephone in youroffice, they must operate on different channels. Press thechannel key to select a channel that provides the clearestcommunication.

Installing the Dterm Cordless

SECTION 1 SELECTING A LOCATION

Select a location for the Dterm Cordless Lite to avoidexcessive heat or humidity. The base unit of the Dterm

Cordless Lite can be placed on a desk or tabletop near astandard 120 Vac outlet and telephone line jack. The baseunit can also be mounted on a standard AT&T or GTE wallplate using the wall mount adapter. Keep the base unit andhandset away from sources of electrical noise (motors,fluorescent lighting, computers, PC monitor). Refer toChapter 1 Specifications and Safety Information for acomplete discussion of safety precautions.

SECTION 2 CONNECTING THE TELEPHONE CORDS

When connecting the telephone cords, observe the followingprecautions.

Never install telephone wiring during a lightning storm.

Never touch bare telephone wires or terminals unlessthe telephone line has been disconnected at thenetwork interface.

Use caution when installing or modifying telephonelines.

SECTION 3 APPLYING POWER TO THE CHARGING UNIT

The unique design of the telephone allows the user to placethe handset in the charging unit with or without the belt clipattached. The charging unit can charge a second battery withor without the handset being charged. The battery packs canautomatically be recharged either in or out of the handset.

The AC adapter furnished with this telephone may beequipped with a polarized line plug (a plug having one bladewider than the other). This plug will fit into the power outletonly one way. If you are unable to insert the plug fully into theoutlet, try reversing the plug. Refer to Figure 3-4 PolarizedPlug.

If you cannot plug the AC adapter into the outlet, the outletmay need to be replaced.

SECTION 4 WALL INSTALLATION

Standard Wall Plate Mounting

The base unit is designed to be mounted on standard AT&Tor GTE wall plate. To attach the wall mount stand to the baseunit:

1. Slide the wall mount stand into the notches at the topof the base unit. Rotate the wall mount stand downand snap it into place.

2. Plug the AC adapter into the base unit.

3. Place the AC adapter cord inside the molded channelof the wall mount stand.

4. Plug one end of the short telephone cord (locallysupplied) in the LINE jack on the base unit. Plug oneend of the NEC digital Multiline Terminal into thePHONE jack. Place the telephone cords inside themolded channels on the bottom of the wall mount stand.

5. Plug the other end of the short telephone cord into themodular wall jack in the center of the wall plate.

6. Place the base unit on the posts of the wall plate andpush down until it is firmly seated.

7. Plug the AC adapter into a standard 120 Vac wall outlet.

Note: Do not use an outlet controlled by a wall switch.

Direct Wall Mounting

If a standard wall plate is not available, mount the telephonedirectly on the wall. Before mounting the telephone, considerthe following:

Select a location away from electrical cables, pipes, orother items behind the mounting location that couldcause a hazard when inserting screws into the wall.

Make sure the wall material is capable of supportingthe weight of the base unit.

Use #10 screws with anchoring devices suitable for thewall material where the base unit will be placed.

To mount the telephone:

1. Insert two mounting screws 3-15/16 inches apart.Allow about 3/16 of a inch between the wall and screwheads for mounting the telephone.

2. Plug and secure the AC adapter.

3. Plug the AC adapter into the base unit.

4. Plug one end of the short telephone cord into the LINEjack on the base unit. Then plug one end of an ElectraProfessional or Electra Elite Multiline Terminal into thePHONE jack. Place the telephone cords inside themolded channels on the bottom of the wall mount stand.

5. Place the base unit on the posts of the wall screws andpush down until it is firmly seated.

Charging Unit Wall Mounting

SECTION 5 ATTACHING THE BELT CLIP TO THE HANDSET

A belt clip can be used to attach the handset to a belt orpocket for convenient portability.

1. Snap the tab out of the belt clip notch on the top of thehandset.

2. Slide the clip into the tab slot. Press firmly until itsnaps into place. The belt clip is designed to fit snuglyonto the handset.

3. To remove the clip, press the retaining clip in toward thebelt clip blade and slide the clip up at the same time.Once the belt clip is removed, remember to reinstall thecover tab.

Charging the Handset Battery Pack

The rechargeable battery pack must be fully charged beforeusing the Dterm Cordless Lite for the first time.

Note: Charge the battery pack without interruption for five toeight hours.

1. Place the handset in the front slot of the charging unit.

2. Make sure the CHARGE 1 indicator lights. If theCHARGE 1 LED does not come on, check to see if theAC adapter is plugged in and that the handset is makinggood contact with the charging contacts on the chargingunit.

Note: The CHARGE 1 LED turns red during and aftercharging the handset with the battery.

Charging Spare Battery Packs

The Dterm Cordless Lite is equipped with a battery charger forcharging the spare battery pack.

1. Slide the spare battery pack into the second slot in thecharging unit until the retaining clip snaps over the topof the pack.

2. Make sure the CHARGE 2 LED lights. If it does notlight, check that the AC adapter is plugged in and thatthe battery pack is making contact with the chargingcontracts on the charging unit.

Charging is complete when the CHARGE 2 LED goesoff.

Note: Charge the battery pack without interruption forfive to eight hours.

3. When charging is complete, press out on the latch andremove the battery pack for use. If the battery pack isnot needed immediately, leave it in the chargingcompartment (it will not overcharge).

Low Battery Indicator

When the Battery Pack in the handset is low and needs to becharged, the batt low message is displayed on the LCD.

Return the handset to the base unit for charging or replace thehandset battery pack with another charged battery pack.

The following table indicates what occurs and the action to betaken during a call or in standby mode when low batteryindication is displayed.

Cleaning the Battery Charge Contacts

To maintain a good charge, it is important to clean all chargingcontacts on the handset and charging unit about once amonth. Use a pencil eraser or other contact cleaner. Do notuse liquids or solvents.

SECTION 4 USING THE NEC MULTILINE TERMINAL

Programming Mode

To assign function keys (F1~F4) and off-hook ringing:

1. Press and hold down k and #, then press the talk key.

2. Press the chan key repeatedly to scroll through the linekey (LK) and feature options for function key F1.

3. Press the vol key to select the displayed line key orfeature.

4. If a Line Key has been assigned, press the chan key toturn Off-Hook Ringing ON or OFF. The LCD will indicate/TALK for ON or /NO TALK for OFF.

5. Press the vol key to advance to the next function key(F2 ~ F4).

6. After programming F4, press the vol key to advance toGlobal Off-Hook Ringing Assignment.

7. Press chan to turn Global Off-Hook Ringing ON/OFF(LCD indicates ON or OFF as appropriate).

8. Press the talk key to exit.

Note 1: Function keys (F1 ~ F4) can be programmed as LineKeys 1~16, Redial (LNR/SPD), Answer (ANS),Feature (FNC), or Recall. When assigned, these keysoperate the same as on an NEC Multiline Terminal.

Note 2: When initially installed, function keys (F1~F4) defaultto Line Keys 1~4 respectively and Off-Hook Ringingdefaults to ON.

Note 3: Global Off-Hook Ringing must be set to ON (default) ifany function key is to operate with Off-Hook Ringing.

Switching Between the Dterm Cordless Lite and the Multiline Terminal

When the Dterm Cordless Lite is associated with a MultilineTerminal the following is applicable:

Switching between cordless and desk mode must bedone while both terminals are idle.

A call in progress cannot be switched between the Dterm

Cordless Lite and the associated Multiline Terminal.

Switching held calls between the Dterm Cordless Lite andthe associated Multiline Terminal is not recommendedsince line key LED indications will not be provided.

Use the base unit on the Dterm Cordless Lite to switchbetween the Dterm Cordless Lite and the Multiline Terminal.

Press Cordless to select the Dterm Cordless Lite.

Press Desk to select the Multiline Terminal. (Refer to Figure4-5 Cordless and Desk Buttons.)

Completing a Call using the NEC Digital Multiline Terminal

When a call is completed, hang up the host telephone.

SECTION 5 MAKING A CALL USING THE Dterm Cordless Lite

Several advanced features for making calls are availabledepending on how the deskset is programmed. Refer toSection 6 Dedicated Feature Operations. This sectiondescribes normal call handling.

Making a Normal Call

1. Remove the handset from the charging unit.

2. Press the talk key. The talk icon appears after thehandset and base unit are connected.

-OR-

Press the designated function key (programmed as aline key). When dial tone is heard, enter the number tobe called. The display shows the dialed telephonenumber.

SECTION 6 DEDICATED FEATURE OPERATIONS

Calls can be placed on hold, transferred to another extension,or two or more parties can be conferenced. These operationsdepend upon how they are set up in the key system.

The handset must be within range of the base for the specialoperations to function properly.

Placing a Call on Hold

1. Press hold on the handset during the call. The LEDassociated with the line key being used flashes.

2. To return to the holding call, press the associated linekey.

Muting a Call

1. Press the mute key on the handset during a call. Thetalk icon blinks on the display.

2. To turn mute off, press the mute key again and the callis restored.

Transferring Calls

Calls can be forwarded to another extension. To transfer a call:

1. Press the transfer key and the phone number of thetransfer destination.

2. Wait for the party to answer, then press the talk key tohang up. The two parties can now converse.

Setting up a Conference Call

This feature allows the user to set up a 3-party conference(the user and two other parities).

To set up the conference:

1. Dial the first number for the first party.

2. When the first party answers, press the conf key.

3. Dial the second number for the second party.

4. Press the conf key again. A 3-party conference isnow established. If any party hangs up, theconference only includes the remaining parties.

Locking and Unlocking the Keypad

The Dterm Cordless Lite can be locked so no outgoing callscan be made.

Locking the Keypad

To lock the telephone:

1. Press and hold the chan key for one second while instandby mode. A code input appears in the display.

2. Enter a 2-digit number. The number is displayed.

2. Enter the 2-digit number used to lock the telephone.The code appears in the display.

3. Enter the 2-digit lock code and press chan. If thenumber is entered correctly, a “beep” is heard and theLCD clears. The telephone goes into standby mode.

Optional Equipment Installation

An optional headset and backup AC adapter can be installedon the Dterm Cordless Lite unit.

SECTION 1 INSTALLING THE OPTIONAL HEADSET (EXP9530)

The optional headset provides a handsfree option for theDterm Cordless Lite. With the headset installed, the user canuse the belt clip the carry the handset and conduct aconversation using the headset.

To install the headset:

Open the cover over the headset jack and plug the headsetinto the receptacle.

No other settings are needed. Operation of the headset is thesame as the handset. However, the user hears through theheadset earphone and talks through the headset microphone.The handset earphone and microphone (mouthpiece) aredisconnected.

Troubleshooting

If the Dterm Cordless Lite is not performing to yourexpectations, try these simple steps. If this does not resolvethe problems, contact the NEC dealer.

Note: Do not attempt to service this unit yourself. All servicemust be done by qualified service personnel.

Problem Suggestion

Charge 1 light will not come on when the handset is placed in the charging unit.

• Make sure the AC adapter is plugged intothe charging unit and wall outlet.

• Make sure the handset is properly seated inthe charging unit.

• Make sure the lead-acid battery pack isproperly placed on the handset.

• Make sure that the charging contacts on thehandset and charging unit are clean.

Charge 2 light will not come on when the spare battery is placed in the charging unit (low battery only).

• Make sure the AC adapter is plugged intothe charging unit and wall outlet.

• Make sure the spare battery is properlyseated in the base unit.

• Make sure the charging contacts on thehandset and charging unit are clean.

Conversation is interrupted frequently.

• Make sure the base unit antenna is fullyvertical.

• Move closer to the base unit.

• Check for low batt warning.

Warning tone and NO SERVICE message

• Move closer to the base unit.

Handset does not ring • The lead-acid battery may be weak. Chargethe battery pack for eight hours.

• Make sure the base unit antenna is fullyvertical.

• The handset may be too far from the baseunit.
