Situation

My friend’s birthday is coming up soon and I don’t have much money to buy them a present with. I have noticed that their desk in their bedroom is a terrible mess. They have pens, pencils and rulers everywhere. I have decided to make them a desk tidy using the design and technology workshop.

Interview client

What material will be good enough for making a desk tidy? Wood will be good for a desk tidy because its stronger than other materials such as plastic.

What color will look nice to it? I think it depends on the color of their room. Its not going to be nice if the color is too strong.

What shape will it be easy to use? Square, because its simple and we can make it stylish if we could.

What kind of style will it be comfortable to use? A simple style.

How big do you want it to be? As big as a cup.

types of join

Butt joint Mitre joint Mortise and Tenon

Mitre joints are often used to produce the corners of picture frames. The mitre needs to be cut at a 45 degree angle.

A very simple joint but it is also very weak. They tend to be used for making picture frames.

This is a very strong joint. The joint is split into two parts one part is the tenon, and the other part is the mortise.

SpecificationTitle Specification And Why Test

MaterialI am going to use different kinds of man made woods and some paint to

make and design this desk tidy.

I will test the wood whether it is light, easy to cut and handle by trying to cut

using DT workshop tools.

Time

I am going to finish producing this desk tidy in 3-4weeks including all the steps,

investigating, designing, planning, creating, and evaluation

I am really confident that I will be able to complete it until the deadline.

SizeThe size of the desk tidy will be as big as enough that most of the stationary

could be in.

To test this, I will try to arrange it in my desk and see if it looks good and doesn’t

take much space.

Aesthetics(Appearance)

The basic design of the desk tidy won’t be complicated but simple so it

will be comfortable to use.

To make sure that the desk tidy is simple, I will research for designs and use them

as example.

Safety I will try to get rid of the sharp edges and make the desk tidy.

To make sure that the edges are not sharp enough, I will try to touch it and rub it on my finger and see if it gives hurt on me.

FunctionThe function of this desk tidy is to put our stationaries in and make our desk

clean and organized.

Put it on my table and try putting my stationaries in the desk tidy.
