To Attain Level 3:

Generate ideas and recognise that your designs haveto meet a range of different needs.

Make realistic plans for achieving your aims.

Clarify ideas when asked and use words, labelled

sketches and models to communicate the details ofyour designs.

Think ahead about the order of your work, choosingappropriate tools, equipment, materials, components

and techniques.Use tools and equipment with some accuracy to cut

and shape materials and to put together components.

Identify where evaluation of the design and makeprocess and your products has led to improvements.

To Attain Level 4:

Generate ideas by collecting and using information.

Take users views about aesthetic and technical issues into

account as you respond to briefs.Communicate alternative ideas using words, labelledsketches and models, showing that you are aware ofconstraints.

Apply your knowledge and understanding of materials,

ingredients and components, and work with them with someaccuracy, paying attention to quality of finish and to function.

Use some ideas from others designing to inform your ownwork.

Produce step-by-step plans and then select and work with a

range of tools and equipment.Identify what is working well and what could be improved to

overcome technical problems.

Reflect on your designs as you develop, recognising thesignificance of knowledge and previous experience.

To Attain Level 5:

Develop ideas by drawing on and using various sources ofinformation.

Clarify your ideas through discussion, drawing and modelling,

showing understanding of aesthetic and economic dimensions.Respond to briefs showing understanding of how culture and

society are reflected in familiar products when developing andcommunicating your own ideas.

Show that you are aware of constraints as you apply knowledge

and understanding of materials, ingredients and techniques.Use understanding of others designing as you develop your work.

Work from your own detailed plans, modifying them whereappropriate.

Work with a range of tools, materials, equipment, components and

processes with some precision.Check your work as it develops, solve technical problems and

show some evidence of creativity as you modify your approach inthe light of progress.

Test and evaluate your products, showing that you understand thesituations in which the products will function.

you understand the form and function of familiar products as youdevelop and model ideas.

Respond creatively to briefs, exploring and testing your designthinking.

Develop detailed criteria for your products and use these to exploreproposals.

Apply your knowledge and understanding by responding to severalaspects of the problem.

Recognise the significance of others designing and modify yourapproaches accordingly.

Adapt your methods of manufacture to changing circumstances asyou solve technical problems, providing a sound explanation forany change from the design proposal.

Select appropriate techniques to evaluate how your products wouldperform when used and modify your products in the light of this

evaluation to improve their performance.
