    Vision

    The question asked was: How can DSM become the most sustainable company in the world?

    We think the real change can only come from the inside of a company. This will not be achieved by only reset-

    ting the vision and mission, and the board investing in (more) sustainable projects. The change has to come

    from the real inside; the employees. HR of DSM states: We regard our employees as our most valuable asset forsucceeding in our mission. What we will do is, put together a program that will succeed in making the DSM

    employees the most sustainable employees in the world. This will be done by creating a DSM-community with

    a shared vision and mental model. Having a sustainable employee-base will increase the possibility of

    succeeding in any action taken within, or from the company to the outside world, in sustainability.

    We introduce, Living Sustainably program for DSM company, which is a human resource project that builds

    an internal community and shares sustainable values. This program will increase the sustainable value of DSM

    brand, preparing and encouraging sustainable actions from within the company.

    DSM Living sustainably logo is composed by symbols that

    represent a house, a factory and a world, which are the three

    levels that the program will inuence. This together with the vesymbols at the bottom, which represents energy, water,

    resources, mobility and waste will help to transmit the topic that

    is being addressed at the dierent applications that this program

    will have.

    The brand will be transmitted inside and outside DSM, having

    important touchpoints at dierent stages being internal

    communication material, workshops and platform the most

    important ones.In order to make from the workshops a more memorable

    experience for the employees, gifts that help remember

    sustainable statements will be given to assistants, for example, a

    coee mug could be used to encourage the use of reusable

    coee containers while being an important brand touchpoint.

    The Living sustainably program expands over 9trimesters. It consists of three stages : Introduction,Implementation and Evaluation. Project starts withthe Introduction in the 1st trimester of 2011 (T1).

    Implementation begins at the end of 2nd trimester(T2) till the 8th trimester (T8). Evaluation comes inthe last trimester (T9) .

    Investments will have to be made by

    integrating DSM LS in the humanresources department and employee

    evaluation matrix, hiring the required

    personnel for planning and executing

    educational workshops, as well for the

    This scheme shows the principle how the sustainable

    message will be spread through all levels of the DSM

    company to the outside world through peers, friends

    The workshops will be organized and given by dierent sustainability agents who are trained by the expert(s). There-

    fore the agents will recruit employees to join these workshops. Per theme there will be 10 workshops, so also 10 possi-bilities to subscribe. The workshops will be given in the evenings, so everyone will be able to participate, this makes the

    workshop very accessible.

    It is also practical because the order; rst explaining what is happening in the world around this topic, what actions the

    employees can take themselves to enhance this, and what role the employees can play within DSM. It will become

    interactive by encouraging discussion among colleagues about what they might nd unsustainable, which will lead to

    networking with new people.

    The 6 themes of the workshops will be energy, water, mobility, resources, waste-

    food and eventually Living Sustainably as the last theme to close everything.

    The purpose of the web platform is to encourage communication about sustainability inside DSM and to show to serve

    as a window of this activity inside the company to the outside world. Articles about how DSM employees are embracing

    sustainability will be published along with resources and information about how to act sustainable at home, at work and

    in the world.

    Employees from DSM will be able to see the same information that the general public have plus access

    to special features and tools when logged in the platform, such as: Have a profile and add info and picture. See information about the workshops, sign up and check their workshop agenda. Share ideas with their fellows, appreciate and comment others ideas. Add contacts from their department, facility and company. Ask questions about sustainability to experts in a forum. Send messages to their contacts. Comment on articles.
