Dr. Jarod Johnson Writes Article about the Fulfilling Iowa’s Need for Dentists (FIND) Program

Dr. Jarod Johnson (DDS ’13), who is now a practicing pediatric dentist in Mus-catine, Iowa, wrote an article, “The Loan Arrangers,” for the November 2017 issue of dentaltown.com. The article discusses Iowa’s Fulfilling Iowa’s Need for Dentists (FIND) program, which helps dentists repay educational debts in exchange for setting up prac-tice in a rural community. The goal of the program is to address Iowa’s dental health care shortage resulting from older dentists who are nearing retirement. The Iowa FIND Project, established by the state of Iowa in 2008, will pay as much as $100,000 of the educational debt of dentists who agree to apportion 35 per-cent of their patients from the underserved community, which includes the elderly, chil-

dren under 3, nursing home residents, noninsured patients, and patients who receive health insurance through state-funded dental care insurance programs. Dentists must have at least $50,000 in education-al debt and be fully trained, licensed, and in good standing with the dental board. Besides the program’s lure of helping to repay dentists’ educational debt is the additional perk of helping dentists secure no- or low-interest loans to help with their purchase of a practice or startup – the result of the FIND Project’s partnership with the Iowa Area Development Group. Dr. Johnson, who completed a pediatric dentistry program at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Dental Medicine, chose to participate in the Iowa FIND Project. He and his wife, Laurie, select-ed Muscatine, because the city had no pediatric dentistry and its location is in close proximity to their families. The Muscatine Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Foundation of Muscatine helped provide him with matching funds to procure his grant. Dr. Johnson reports that during the first six months, he provided services to 900 underserved children.

— IMPORTANT NOTICE — Dear Faculty, Students, and Staff: Ms. Chris White has retired as of September 5, 2017, and we are trying to replace her. However, as with all highly skilled people, we can never replace them; we only hope to find a substitute. During the in-terim period between Ms. White’s retirement and the start date of her successor, both Chris White and Jenni Peak (Iowa Institute for Oral Health Research) will be producing the DSB Weekly. If you have news/photos you would like to submit to the DSB Weekly, please send them to both Jenni ([email protected]) and Chris ([email protected]). We will continue the excellent work that Chris has produced over the years. Thanks for your cooperation! Brad A. Amendt Associate Dean For Research

Word Play: Shaggy Dog Story The world expert on European wasps and the

sounds that they make is taking a stroll downtown. As he passes by the record shop, a sign catches his eye: "Just Released: New LP - Wasps of the World and the Sounds They Make - Available now!" Unable to resist the temptation, the man goes into the shop. "I am the world expert on European wasps and the sounds that they make. I'd very much like to listen to the new LP you have adver-tised in the window." "Certainly, sir," says the young man behind the counter. "If you'd like to step into the booth and put on the headphones, I'll put the LP on for you." The world expert on European wasps goes into the booth and puts on the earphones. Three minutes later, he comes out of the booth and announces, "I am the world expert on European wasps and the sounds that they make and yet I recognized none of those." "I'm very sorry Sir," says the young assistant. "If you'd care to step into the booth again, I can play you another track." The world expert on European wasps and the sounds that they make steps back into the booth and replaces the headphones. Three minutes later, he comes out of the booth shaking his head. "I don't understand it," he says, "I am the world expert on Euro-pean wasps and the sounds that they make, and yet I still can't recog-nize any of those!" "I'm terribly sorry, sir," says the young man, "perhaps if you'd like to step into the booth again, you could hear another track." Sighing, the world expert on European wasps and the sounds that they make steps back into the booth. Five minutes later, he comes out again, clearly agitated. "I am the world expert on European wasps and the sounds that they make and yet I have recognized none of the wasps on this LP." "I really am terribly sorry," says the young assistant, "I've just realized I was playing you the bee side."

The Carver College of Medicine Office, Office of Faculty Affairs and Development is pleased to announce a partnership with the Research Development Office at the University of Iowa. They will be offering a grant writing workshop on October 24. Dr. M.S. (Peg) AtKisson earned a PhD in neuroscience from Tufts University but has spent most of the last 16 years thinking about grant applications. In 2001, she founded the grant and research development support office at Tufts University, where she and her team helps secure $140,000,000 in grant funding through 2010. She also worked for Grant Writers’ Seminars and Workshops from 2009-2016, providing training in grantsmanship and direct support for individual applicants.
