Adult Matters!by Julie Cheatwood - Adult Matters! Director

Adult Matters! is a social program specifically designed for ouradults with DS ages 18 and older. The focus is on providing anenvironment to help them further develop their social skills, buildfriendships among other adults with DS, and offer them safe andappropriate interactions within the community. In order to fosterthat environment, we encourage them to invite an age-appropriatepeer (another adult with special needs) to participate with them.DSA will pay the participation fee for both of them as well as a 1:4chaperone ratio. We realize that our adults depend on family andfriends for transportation to and from these activities, so we willalways try to plan activities that offer a place whereparents/guardians can gather nearby (restaurant, coffee shop, etc.)and visit with each other during the event. Adam recently celebrated his 29thbirthday with friends, family, neighbors and co-workers. He beganhis education almost immediatelyafter birth at the Brighton School. Then it was on through the publicschool system. While in high school,Adam created a work of art which waslater displayed at then Governor George W. Bush’s office in the stateCapitol. He was also a representative at the Disability LeadershipConference.

He has been competitively employed for nine years and lives in agroup home with 3 other housemates.

Adam loves to fish with his friends Travis and Tony, as well as withhis parents. He even has the nickname “Catfish” which is boldlyemblazoned on the front of a cap which was a gift from Tony. He

loves Brad Paisley’s “Fishing Song”, too! In addition to gettingtogether with friends, Adam also enjoys watching sports and goingto the movies, is an avid golfer, loves the Spurs, and enjoys listeningto all types of music.

Traveling is another one of Adam’s loves. In May he visitedMammoth Cave in Kentucky, among other places. On the trip backhome, he was privileged to be on an “Honor Flight” and got to visitwith many men and women who served in World War II. Adamhopes that his next trip will be to the Bahamas!

More than anything, Adam adores spending time with his extendedfamily. He is looking forward to the arrival of baby boys in the spring- his cousin and wife are expecting twin boys!

GARY STINNETT, Board ofDirectors & Finance Committee

by Lisa Drozdick

Gary Stinnett joined the DSASABoard of Directors in December of2009 following a request by ChristyAnderson, the current ViceChairperson of the Board. He alsoserves on the finance committee. Garywanted to become involved and make a difference in a growing, charitable organization. Although he does not have a child withDown syndrome, he is close friends with Kevin and ChristyAnderson, whose son Drew has Down syndrome.

Prior to Drew’s birth, Gary admits that he knew very little aboutDown syndrome. He has learned a lot over the years and is eager tosee the DSASA grow and become a one-stop, local resource for thosefamilies expecting or who have kids or family members with Downsyndrome. He would like to see the DSASA continue and increaseeducational, support, and entertainment programs for children, adults, and families touched by Down syndrome.

Gary is Vice President of the Wash Tub car washes based in SanAntonio. He has worked for the company for 21 years, starting outwashing cars while attending UTSA. When he started, there were only3 locations; now the Wash Tub operates 20 full service car washes andemploys over 1,200 people. The large retail presence of Wash Tubthroughout San Antonio offers some unique awareness opportunitiesfor the DSASA.

Gary is married to Laura Stinnett, and they have a 14-year-olddaughter Courtney and an 11-year-old son Nicholas. His kids arequite active and are “at that age where they always have somethinggoing on - sports, social etc. Thankfully they are not old enough todrive yet, so most of our free time is spent watching volleyball andbasketball games and practices.” Although Gary has been a SanAntonio resident since 1986, he moved around quite a bit when hewas younger, including Lubbock, Amarillo and Arlington, prior toSan Antonio.

Thank you, Gary, for sharing your time and insight with theDown Syndrome Association of San Antonio!
