IP Performance Testing withTruPacket™Throughput, Packet Loss and Pingtests on both the upstream anddownstream can be performed withthe DSAM-2500 to identify IPproblems in the physical plant.Upstream and downstream rates areseparate, simultaneous, results. Theconfiguration file name is displayedfor the user to check if provisioningcorresponds to the measured rates.Upstream throughput is between thetest point and the CMTS.Downstream throughput is between aremote HTTP server and the testpoint. Server IP addresses and the testfile name and path are specified in theFDM PC configuration software to bedeployed to specific meters. TheTruPacket™ Packet Loss test uses aseries of pings to the CMTS to testpacket loss. It operates in two modes:

DSAM-2500, -3500 and -3600 provide a full set ofphysical parameters for a DOCSIS® connection,downstream and upstream.

DSAM-2500, -3500 and -3600 provide complete network parameters for a DOCSIS® registration, includ-ing configuration file served and service identifiernumber (SID)

Once a DOCSIS® connection is established, theassigned channel can be stressed based on theconfiguration file served (based on system provision-ing for the MAC address used). Packet Loss(shown above),Throughput and Ping tests can beperformed. The same tests can be performedadditionally over the DSAM Ethernet port withmodels -3500 and -3600

Basic Mode and SNMP Mode. BasicMode measures and displays the totalloop count of sent and lost packets anda ratio of the sent-to-lost packets as apercent. Basic mode does notdistinguish between sent and lostpackets on the upstream anddownstream; it provides a loop count.TruPacket™ continues to count lostpackets even if there is steadydownstream and upstream noise. TheSNMP mode displays a loop count ofsent and lost packets, individualupstream and downstream lostpackets, and a ratio of each. SNMPmode also offers an upstream SNRmeasurement. Like the Basic mode, theSNMP will continue counting lostpackets even with steady noise on thedownstream or upstream. It is also notfooled by downstream noise, meaningthat it will never count downstreampacket losses as upstream packet losses.

To enable the SNMP mode, a secure,read-only public community string forthe CMTS must be configured into themeter with FDM PC software. Ping isgenerally used simply to testconnectivity between two devices suchas the DSAM and an Internet webserver, but it is also used to test delaybetween these devices. The pingconnectivity test allows the technicianto connect beyond the CMTS or MSOnetwork to an Internet server of theirchoice. The technician may pre-set upto 10 different IP target addresses forthe test. These IP addresses may beHTTP or FTP servers. The user also hasthe ability to select different packetsizes, in bytes, and time between pings.
