AAutomation and Robotics CNC MILL SYSTEM

    MODEL 5600

GENERAL DESCRIPTIONThe CNC Mill System, model 5600, provides training incomputer-aided manufacturing (CAM) with an industrial-grade microprocessor-driven CNC mill. The systemallows students to practice computer numerical controlled(CNC) code programming and editing, learn to operatemill components, controls, and tools, set a programmedreference zero, follow the steps necessary to machine apart to programmed specifications, and apply the machinecode language to current mill technology.

The CNC Mill can machine pieces of soft materialssuch as plastic and wax, as well as harder materials suchas aluminum, mild steel, and brass. It consists of a millingtable, a headstock carrying the spindle motor, and a cast-iron vertical column with dovetail slide. The CNC mill ismounted on a solid steel chassis and is equipped withR8 tooling. The stock to be milled is secured in a vise that

holds it to the milling table. Two ball screws, each drivenby a stepper motor, are used to move the table along theX axis (left and right) and Y axis (backward and forward)to feed the stock through the periphery of the end mill. Athird ball screw, also driven by a stepper motor, is usedto move the headstock along the Z axis (up and down)for positioning the end mill. The speed of each steppermotor can be programmed separately for feed rates upto 508 mm/min (20 in/min). A 746-W (1.0-hp) DC motorrotates the spindle at speeds programmable up to3400 rpm. The end mill can be changed to accommodatedifferent stock materials and milling designs.

A computer (not included) is used to create NC partprograms with G and M machine codes or their conversa-tional code equivalents. The created programs are down-loaded to the on-board microprocessor of the CNC mill, which stores and executes them. Since the CNC millconnects directly to the serial or Ethernet port of a com-puter, or directly to a network, no additional interface cardis required. The computer is free to be used for anyadditional applications, since it is not dedicated to thecontrol of the mill.

The CNC mill is designed for use with the includedLab-Volt CNC Mill Software, Model 5660. This Windows-based software permits creation of G and M code partprograms for download to the CNC mill. It features toolpath emulation, which allows students to set up the toolpaths and the cut steps, and create a part program tosimulate tool motion on a monitor in order to verify NCcodes and the finished part prior to the actual cutting.Canned cycles can be programmed. The software canimport NC part programs created with otherCAM programs that support G and M codes.

The CNC mill features a control panel that permits themill to be operated manually. This panel includes amultiple-line LCD display, an easy-to-use membranekeypad, an error indicator/pause button, and a key-re-leased emergency stop push-button. The mill parameters, including the spindle speed, the feed rate, the referencepoint, and the X, Y, and Z axes coordinates can be setby accessing different menus. During the machining, thecontrol panel displays the X, Y, and Z axes coordinates,as well as the current feed and spindle speed.

The CNC mill is designed for maximum safety. Safetydoors provide protection during machining. Magneticinterlocks located on the doors stop the spindle and theaxes if a door is opened during machining. Limit switchesprevent over-travel of the mill's spindle and table. Press-ing the emergency stop push-button on the control panelcuts off the power to the spindle motor and stops theaxes.

The CNC mill supports low-voltage communicationswith robotic units to permit students to create automatedwork cells, ideal for implementing computer-integratedmanufacturing (CIM). For this purpose, the CNC millfeatures a 15-pin TTL/IO port providing four 5-V digitalinput and four 5-V digital output lines forTTL communication to an automation work cell. This portcan be connected to the Lab-Volt Servo-Robot, Model5250, offered as an option to achieve automatic loadingand unloading of the stock with a robot arm. The CNC millalso features a 5-pin solenoid driver port providing con-nections for up to four auxiliary devices. This port can beconnected, for example, to the pneumatic control box ofthe optional Pneumatic Vise, Model 5616, to achieveautomatic clamping and unclamping of the stock loadedin the CNC mill. The TTL/IO and solenoid driver ports ofthe CNC mill are M-code supported through the CNC MillSoftware, Model 5660.

The CNC Mill System comes with the accessories, software, and cables required for system operation. These include, among others, a vise, a basic milling kit,100 blocks of industrial machinable wax, a serial cable,a cross-over Ethernet cable, and a copy of the CNC MillSoftware, Model 5660.

Also included are two user guides. One user guidegives students experience with equipment designed toprepare them for the automated manufacturing environ-ment. A user guide for the CNC Mill Software,Model 5660, is also included. It provides documentationdescribing the features of the CNC Mill Software.

To enhance or expand the capabilities of the system,an assortment of milling tools and stock materials ofdifferent sizes are offered as option.
