ExplanationAppendix A. Database of groundwater levels and hydrograph descriptions for the Nevada Test Site area, Nye County, NevadaThis workbook is part of appendix A in "Elliott, Peggy E. and Fenelon, Joseph M., 2010, Database of groundwater levels and hydrograph descriptions for the Nevada Test Site area, Nye County, Nevada: U.S. Geological Survey Data Series 533, 16 p.", which was first released on December 16, 2010 at http://pubs.usgs.gov/ds/533/. Since then, this workbook and associated Access database in appendix A have been updated (revision 1.0) as follows: (1) 631 water levels measured by USGS through March 2011, and other agencies through May 2011, were added to the water-level database; (2) 26 new wells from 8 boreholes recently drilled in the Pahute Mesa area also were added to the database.

There are two worksheets in the Excel workbook in addition to this "Explanation" worksheet. The primary worksheet, "Hydrographs", contains a hydrograph, water-level history, and location for each well in the study area. The "Condition definitions" worksheet contains a list and description of the hydrologic conditions that were used to describe the state of each water level measured in the study area, which are shown in the "Hydrographs" worksheet. The well began supplying water for Nevada National Security Site operations beginning in 1962. It was discontinued from use on 9/21/2005, although the well has been pumped sporadically since then. Over the 43 years of use, approximately 2.4 Bgal of water were withdrawn. Prior to 1997, water-level measurements were sporadic. Two early water levels in September 1962 and January 1963 are considered representative of steady-state conditions in the regional carbonate aquifer. Later water levels likely reflect conditions in the aquifer caused by pumping in Army 1 WW. Some of the variation in water levels may be caused by differences in the elapsed time between the pump shutting off and the water-level measurement. However, almost all of the water levels were measured after the pump had been off for 24 hours or more. Most of the measurements from 1997 to 2005 were made on a Monday morning, after the pump had been off for the previous 3 days. Maximum measured drawdown (when the pump was not on) during the period of record was about 8 ft and occurred shortly before the well was discontinued from use. The relatively large drawdowns in August and September 2005, reflect large amounts of pumpage that occurred during these months. The rising water levels beginning in late 2005 show recovery after pumping in the well was discontinued. The rise in water levels from 2006-2008 may reflect continued recovery from pumping in Army 1 WW, but the rise also is assumed to be a response to above average precipitation that occurred during the winter of 2004-05 (Air Resources Laboratory, Special Operations and Research Division, 2011). The slight decline in water levels beginning in late 2010 is interpreted to be equilibration of the aquifer following the recharge event. These steady-state water levels, which are about 1 ft lower than pre-pumping levels measured in 1962 and 1963, are tentatively considered representative of steady-state conditions in the regional carbonate aquifer. Other wells in the regional carbonate aquifer show similar trends for this same period.http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nv/nwis/nwisman/?site_no=36353011602140136.591572-116.038126363530116021401Army 1 WW month.SuspectAnomalous - lowNANANANANAACUWell Army 6 was open to about 250 ft of alluvium (sand and clay) below the water level measured in 1951. The well has one measured water level, which is anomalously low and considered suspect. It was noted in Thordarson and others (1967) that the "water level probably represents residual drawdown after bailing of tuff aquitard". The well produced about 3 gal/min and was abandoned because of poor water quality.http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nv/nwis/nwisman/?site_no=36370711601030136.61865515-116.0183864363707116010301Army 632566/24/99 0:00Other ReportedDryReported Well dry.NoneDryNANANANANA 36.61865515-116.0183864365619116483901Beatty Middle Well41106/23/93 0:0049.004061.00Driller ReportedNearest footWL meas on day of well completion, 6/23/1993.Steady stateLimited dataNANANANANAVARBeatty Middle Well is open below the water table to about 525 ft of rhyolite and tuff. On the day of completion, the well was pump-tested at 140 gal/min, which resulted in 200 ft of drawdown over 66 hours. The initial water level, which is listed as a static level on a well driller's report, compares reasonably well with the initial water-level altitude measured in nearby Beatty Upper Indian Well. Therefore, the initial level is flagged as representative of steady-state conditions in the volcanic aquifer but this interpretation is based on limited data. Beatty Middle Well was pumped about 12 hours per day from 1995 to 1998, with a total of about 20 Mgal pumped during this period; about 4 Mgal of water were withdrawn during 1998 (Reiner and others, 2002). Drawdowns during pumping in 1998 were about 100 ft, and are consistent with the amount of drawdown that occurred in the well during the pump test on the day of completion. Nonpumping water levels measured during periods of recovery in 1998 [Jim Weeks (Ret.), Beatty Water & Sanitation District, oral commun., 2009], represent transient conditions in the volcanic aquifer open to the well.http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nv/nwis/nwisman/?site_no=36561911648390136.9396664-116.8133945365619116483901Beatty Middle Well411012/30/97 9:00143.003967.00Other ReportedRecently pumpedAirlineNearest foot TransientPumping effectPumping areaDeclining trendNANANA 36.9396664-116.8133945365619116483901Beatty Middle Well41101/6/98 8:39161.003949.00Other ReportedRecently pumpedAirlineNearest foot TransientPumping effectPumping areaDeclining trendNANANA 36.9396664-116.8133945365619116483901Beatty Middle Well41101/13/98 9:15251.003859.00Other ReportedPumpingAirlineNearest foot NonstaticAbrupt changePumping effectPumping areaDeclining trendAnomalous - On the day of well completion, the well was pump-tested at 275 gal/min, which resulted in 179 ft of drawdown in 7 hours. The initial water level is listed as static on a well driller's report, and is assumed to represent steady-state conditions in the volcanic aquifer open to the well; however, data are limited. From 1991 to 2009, about 360 Mgal of water were pumped from the well; during 1999, the well was pumped about 12 hours per day with more than 19 Mgal of water withdrawn (Reiner and others, 2002). Measurements in 1999 show two distinct sets of water-level altitudes at about 3,420 and 3,500 ft. The lower water levels were measured during active pumping, and represent nonstatic conditions in the volcanic aquifer open to the well, whereas the higher water levels represent measurements made during periods of recovery shortly after pumping [Jim Weeks (Ret.), Beatty Water & Sanitation District, oral commun., 2009], and represent transient conditions in the volcanic aquifer.http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nv/nwis/nwisman/?site_no=36552711647530136.92438916-116.799783365527116475301Beatty Summit Well388212/22/98 9:49470.003412.00Other ReportedPumpingAirlineNearest foot NonstaticPumping effectPumping areaAnomalous - The initial water level is listed as a static water level on a well driller's report and was measured shortly after well completion. This water level compares reasonably well with the initial water-level altitude measured in nearby Beatty Middle Well. Therefore, the first water level is flagged as steady state, but is based on limited data. From 1991 to 2009, about 520 Mgal of water were pumped from the well; during 1999, about 29 Mgal of water were withdrawn (Reiner and others, 2002). All water levels measured after the initial water-level measurement were made during periods of active or recent pumping [Jim Weeks (Ret.), Beatty Water & Sanitation District, oral commun., 2009], are drawn down about 200-300 ft below the steady-state measurement, and represent transient conditions in the volcanic aquifer open to the well.http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nv/nwis/nwisman/?site_no=36570911648110136.9516107-116.804228365709116481101Beatty Upper Indian Well424012/22/98 9:09408.003832.00Other ReportedOtherAirlineNearest and clay and gravel. The open interval in this well is near the level of Beatty Wash (Reiner and others, 2002). As a result, water levels may be affected by intermittent surface flow in the vicinity of the wash. Water levels show annual fluctuations of 2-3 ft that are attributed to nearby evapotranspiration. There is a slight, long-term decline in the water levels, the cause of which is unknown. Pumping in the alluvium in Beatty, about 3 miles to the southwest of the well, might be the cause of this slight decline. Because the decline is small and cannot be definitively attributed to pumping, the water levels are considered representative of steady-state conditions in the alluvial aquifer.http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nv/nwis/nwisman/?site_no=36564011643150136.94438979-116.7217266365640116431501Beatty Wash Terrace Well34502/26/97 10:2017.823432.18USGS Steel tapeNearest 1/100 Ft stateLimited dataNANANANANAVCMBeatty Wash Windmill Well is open below the saturated zone to about 100 ft of "solid rock" overlying 20 ft of gravel. The solid rock is assumed to be volcanic rock. Results of a bailer test in the well after completion showed 2 ft of drawdown over 2 hours at a rate of 20 gal/min. One water level was measured in this well, the same day the well was completed. Based on limited data, the water level is assumed to represent steady-state conditions in the volcanic composite unit open to the well. The assumption is based on the relatively small drawdown during pumping and the similarity of the water level with levels in nearby wells.http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nv/nwis/nwisman/?site_no=37001411633250137.00383565-116.5578349365457116515801Beatty Water Test Hole33656/12/63 0:0080.003285.00Driller OtherNearest footWL meas on day of well completion, 06/12/63. Method of measurement unknown.Steady stateLimited dataNANANANANAAARBeatty Water Test Hole was open below the measured water level to about 95 ft of alternating layers of sand and gravel, cemented gravel, and sandy clay. The well was bailed at a rate of about 10 gal/min after completion. Only one water level was measured in the well, on the day of completion, and this level appears reasonable when compared to measurements made in nearby wells. Based on limited data, the water level measured in Beatty Water Test Hole is considered representative of steady-state conditions in the alluvial aquifer open to the well. The well was plugged and abandoned on the same day of well completion (June 12, 1963) due to low productivity.http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nv/nwis/nwisman/?site_no=36545711651580136.9157787-116.761449365524116444001Beatty Well No. 1336510/26/62 0:0095.003270.00Driller ReportedNearest footWL meas on day of well completion, 10/26/62.Insufficient dataNANANANANANAAARBeatty Well No. 1 is open below the water table to about 105 ft of gravel, sand, and sandstone. The well was pump-tested after well completion at 80 gal/min from a depth of 150 ft. Only one water level is available, and it was measured on the day of well completion.
