We study the past, in order to better understand the present, in order that we can better predict the future.

What can you expect from DS1?

• A well thought out weekly lecture series delivered by experts in their field

• A relevant weekly task to help you understand the subject matter

• Electronic Versions of any notes and information you may need


• A weekly seminar session providing opportunity to disseminate what you have learned

• Opportunity to discuss both your research and writing skills and your essay progress

• Prompt notification of any changes to the schedule

What is expected of you?

• You are expected to attend all lectures and all seminar sessions, you should always be punctual

• You are expected to engage fully in the module and the subject matter

• You should pay careful attention, making notes during lectures

• Write down any questions you may have and ask them at the end of the lecture


• You should complete all tasks to the best of your ability and on time

• You are expected to regularly check the MLE for notes and updates

• You should maintain positive regard and respect towards staff and other students at all times

Project - What is the Cultural Significance of My Year?

For this short project you will be exploring the key events and culture of the 20th Century. You will each be allocated one year from the 20th Century and you are expected to become the expert on the key cultural, social, political and media events during this year.

You will be required to produce a properly referenced presentation of approximately 5 minutes that conveys the important events of your allocated year. This presentation should include images and text, and end with a short bibliography.

Your presentation should be ready in week 4, please note this project is not aimed at assessing your presentation skills, it is designed to help you begin to understand how to research and reference and to give you and your peer group the opportunity to learn about the 20th century.
