DS8CAPGEN – An automated DS8000 Configuration Planning TOOL created to provide (FTSS/BP) a simplified way to enhance the overall planning and logical configuration of the DS8000 new machine.

The Configuration Planning is intended to provide a configuration option to the DS8000 Storage Manager.

CAPGEN is intended to provide a faster way to generate DSCLI scripts and planning documentation for large DS8000 Configurations or machines with complex storage requirements.

CAPGEN is a combination of Microsoft VBScript and Excel code that provides users (Storage Administrators) with a quick and easy way to create an Excel workbook for Configuration Planning and DSCLI Command Generation.

The Tool is primarily used for input and is structured like the machine. Mapping just became easier.

Improved User Time using the toolEliminate need to run individual DSCLI Commands (-fmt delim) for

spreadsheet input– DSCLI Commands available for Cut and Paste for Scripts, providing less user

error

– Tools Display Key Resources and Logical configuration detail

– DS8CAPGEN The excel spreadsheet is primarily used for input and is structured like the machine.

ie: define the DDMs, arraysites, arrays, ranks, extpools volumes then host mapping.

– plan the layout of a DS8000 to ensure that the customer's data would fit appropriately; create either resource sharing, via complete volume spread across available extentpools, or workload isolation (or it could be used for a combination of both); and, as a guide to write the DSCLI mkxxxvol commands (either mkckdvol or mkfbvol whichever the case might be).

– resource sharing - i.e., spread the volumes for each LCU across all applicable extentpools or spread everything across everything.
