1. Demo ScenarioThis scenario illustrates the benefits of using a business application from Microsoft along with MicrosoftEssential Business Server. Stan Orme owns Adventure Works and due to immense growth has upgradedfrom entry level technology to a server designed for small businesses. This Essential Business Serverfrom Microsoft is able to handle multiple users accessing the server, secures his business transactionsand is scalable to the extent that he and other remote staff can access integral system components fromoutside of the company.

Showcasing the strength of Microsoft Essential Business Server along with a Microsoft businessapplication (in this case Microsoft Dynamics GP,) you will see the Microsoft business partner forAdventure Works, Chris McGurk, access the system remotely to check the server status and enable theDynamics Business Portal for remote usage. This brings out the IT benefits a small business can gainwhen using Essential Business Server. First, the server comes with functionality that makes it a lowmaintenance system. Additionally, due to the ease in remote connections, using a partner as anaugmentation to your IT staff for a few hours a week can be a cost-effective way of growing into larger IT

needs without having to add another full time employee.

Many small business owners have a difficult time transitioning from having their hands deep into everypiece of operational and transactional data, to focusing on strategy development. The design of thebusiness applications from Microsoft make it easy for a decision maker to focus on relevant pieces of thebusiness, accessing integral data and key performance indicators (KPIs) on a dashboard. This datacomes directly from the SQL database so it is always up to date. In this scene, Stan is able to connect tohis dashboard on Dynamics Business Portal, an intranet application built on Windows SharePointServices, from outside of the company and review decision maker data, emphasizing his need forstrategic information.

Annie Herriman, Stan’s Accounts Receivable Manager, enters the scene using the Microsoft DynamicsGP business application. As a person dedicated to an operational role, she makes the business

application her home page. The Microsoft business applications are interconnected with many of theMicrosoft business productivity tools, so she is able to launch Outlook from the GP homepage, Followinga request from Nancy Anderson in sales, she investigates a customer’s credit limit using a Smart List tool. These Smart Lists are customizable real-time queries that read directly from the SQL database. Using thedrilldown functionality from one of the queries, she is able to get to the customer’s record and make achange to the credit limit. She then quickly informs Nancy of the change.

Once informed of the customer’s status change, Nancy is able to remotely access the system andprocess a customer order. She, too, is able to access Outlook as well as the Sales Transaction Entryscreen from her home page. She transfers a quote to an order successfully based on the status changeenacted by Annie.

This scenario weaves together multiple people and roles, some with local and others with remote access

to the systems, showing the new flexibility in system access and confidence in a server that is able tohandle multiple users and increased transaction volume for a small to mid-sized business in a fast-growthstage.
