Do You Remember? Over To You

Two British tennis players in

an All England Wimbledon

s ingles f inal – can you

i m a g i n e t h a t ? W e l l i t

happened in the first week of

July 1961. Then 29 year old

Angela Mortimer met – and

beat - 20 year old Christine

Truman 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.

The 1960s were a pinnacle of

British Wimbledon success.

Ann Haydon Jones won the

Ladies singles in 1969; and

joined up with Australian Fred

Stolle to take the mixed

doubles that same year. We

then had to wait until 1977

when Virginia Wade took the

Ladies singles. No doubt hope

will still spring eternal – but I

must admit I don’t think we’ll

ever see this again.

All British Wimbledon Finale Bunk Beds

Dear Mary and Jimmy

My two grandsons were very

excited about their recent

house-move. The older one,

who is 6, told me that he now

sleeps ‘upstairs upstairs’. It

took a few more questions to

work out that he meant, they

now have bunk beds! He has

the top one, and has to climb a

ladder to get into bed.

B o t h b o y s w e r e v e r y

interested when I told them

that when I was in the army,

we had bunk beds with three

layers. It seemed very strange

at first, but you soon got used

to it. I expect you can guess

why my mate’s nickname was

‘Ham Harry’.

Best wishes from George

!
