The Sight-restoring Angel in North India

According to the International Agency for prevention of Blindness, more than 800 million people in the world are blind, and what is more alarming is that India has the Largest Blind population in the world. But the positive side is that around 80% of this blindness is avoidable; due to lack of availability of sufficient and quality Eye care facilities, eliminating avoidable blindness has become, an uphill task. I am proud of the fact that as a volunteer at the hospital, I am indirectly a part of this daunting task of eliminating avoidable blindness.

SCEH is one of the best Eye Care Institutions in North India providing quality Eye Care to people across all sections of the society. Working on a Cross Subsidy Principle, about 50 to 60% of the total sight restoration surgeries are done free or highly subsidized for the underprivileged section of the society. There is absolutely no discrimination between the patients who can pay and those who cannot. The same doctors treat both of them, with the same dedication. Discrimination is not made even when it comes to food, as the same food that everybody else pays for, is served free to the poor patients, lovingly, which is a rare sight in any of the Charity hospitals. Volunteering with SCEH, has been an eye opener for me, when I realized that poor eye sight can add so much to the difficulties of the poor people, who struggle to earn enough to make both the ends meet. In my opinion SCEH, is a sight-restoring angel indeed..!!

The Cornea Team achieved yet another big task of re-initiating the procedure of keratoprosthesis in Shroff eye hospital with the help of senior faculty at Sankara Nethralya. It has helped to give vision to two one eyed patients with end stage ocular surface disorders. These patients had repeated graft failures due to stem cell deficiency and the only resort for them was Boston Keratoprosthesis which is an artificial cornea made of polymethaacrylate(PMMA) of a collor button design. It is composed of a front plate with a stem, which houses the optical portion of the device, a back plate and a titanium locking c-ring.
