SCMS Group of Educational Institutions

With the intention of renovating the house, a man in Japan breaks open the wall. Japanese houses usually have a hollow space between the wooden walls. When splitting open the walls, he found that there was a lizard stuck there because a nail from outside hammered into one of its feet.

On seeing this he feels pity for the creature. At the same time he becomes curious, because when he checked the nail, it was nailed some five years ago when the house was first built.

What a great surprise? The lizard has survived in such position for five years! In a dark wall partition for five years without moving; it is something impossible and mind-boggling. Then he wondered how this lizard survived for five years without moving a single step - since its foot was nailed!

So he stopped his work and observed the lizard, what it has been doing, and what and how it has been eating. Later, not knowing from where it came, appears another lizard, with food in its mouth. Ah! He was stunned and touched deeply. For the lizard, that was stuck by nail, another lizard has been feeding it for the past five years.

Imagine, it has been doing that untiringly for five long years, covering almost the entire lifespan of the animal, without giving up hope on its partner.

Think, will you do that to your partner? Think, will you do it to your mom, who brought you after a big struggle of nine long months? Or at least to your dad, brothers, sisters, friends and co-workers?

Imagine what a small creature can do that a creature blessed with a brilliant mind can’t.

As information and communication technology advances, our access to information becomes faster and faster. But the distance between human beings, is it getting closer as well?

Please never abandon your loved ones.

Never say you are busy when they really need you. You may have the entire world at your feet. But you might be the only world to them. A moment of negligence might break the very heart which loves you through all odds.

To live use heart and to survive use brains. Then life would be a paradise unfurling only love, joy and happiness.

The spirit of youth, as described by Dr.S.Radhakrishnan, our former President is a flexibility of mind, spirit of adventure and the eager-ness to improve on the past. The great Statesmen who framed our Constitution and gave us the duty of creating a caste-less and classless society, would have certainly expected the involvement of our youth in such a noble effort. Such a social transformation can become a reality only if national resources, development and opportunities for growth reach every citizen, especially the youth, regardless of gender, religion or caste, the Governor stated.

While we expect from the youth, the responsibility of being at the fore-front of our nation building activities, we have to ask ourselves, whether we have done enough to help them realise their potential. As a nation, we have a responsibility to save our youth from being misdirected by people and organisations with vested interests, the Governor remarked.

To make our youth properly skilled, we need to urgently fine-tune our syllabi in order to accommodate employability skills. We have not achieved great success in this regard so far, but many of our colleges are offering add-on courses to enhance the skills of the students. “I am glad that Kerala had managed to enter the top 25 percentile of the most employable States in as early as 2016 itself,” he commented.

He urged all institutions under the SCMS Group to include edu-cation on the Fundamental duties of citizens, as envisaged in the Directive Principles of our Constitution.

At the outset, the Governor paid his respects to the memory of Dr.Pradeep Thevannoor who served as Vice Chairman of the SCMS Group, inspiring his colleagues through words and deeds that always evinced his strong urge to take the institution to greater heights. Dr.Pradeep’s vision, imagination and untiring energy con-tinue to inspire his team to take forward his dreams of institution building, he observed.

Dr.Radha Thevannoor, Group Director and Registrar welcomed the Chief Guest and the audience. Dr.Indu Nair, Group Director proposed the vote of thanks. Prof.Baiju Radhakrishnan and Prof. S.Gopakumar, Group Directors also spoke.

SCMS Water Institute and Kochi Metro Rail Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding for conducting a study to identify effective utilisation of rainwater collected over metro stations, depot and viaducts. The main objective of the study, which will be completed in three months, is to have a comprehensive water management policy for the operations of Kochi Metro.

“There is scarcity of water everywhere. To counter this extraordinary situation every effort to conserve water has to be taken. Through the initiative we are sending a wonderful message to the society that whatever be the space available, water should be conserved,” said Mr.A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish IAS, MD, KMRL.

SCMS Water Institute will conduct a water audit of metro facilities and explore con-servation opportunities. SCMS will provide

technical support in the formulation of Kochi Metro water policy, water literacy promotion and dissemination of water harvesting con-cepts among different sections of society.

KMRL has an average rooftop area of 2,000 sq.m. and about 6 lakh kiloliters of storm water can be collected from metro station rooftops and viaducts (constructed section at present) per annum. Metro can act as a major rainwater harvesting structure for the city.

Delegation from International Water Association visits SCMS Water Institute

The delegation from International Water Association (IWA),The Netherlands visited SCMS Water Institute on December 21,

2018 and had highly appreciated the work done by SWI, particularly in addressing the real time water related problems of the local self governments of the State. The initiatives which SWI undertake for helping in ensuring water security in urban areas like Kochi and Guruvayur are the prime reason why IWA decided to visit SWI. This is because urban water security is one of most important concerns all over the world. The Department of Civil Engineering in IIT Madras has started an office for IWA for South India and it has been decid-ed that SWI shall associate with that office. In the meeting SWI had with International Water Association, they expressed the willingness to accept SWI as their technological partner for Kerala.

The delegation of IWA to SWI consisted of Prof. Kalanidhi Vairavamoorthy, Executive Director, IWA, Prof. Shajan John,

SCMS Water Institute was selected by Guruvayur Municipality for conducting a City Level Water Audit for this temple city. SWI won this project through invited bid announced by the Municipality where our quote was the lowest in comparison with various other government institutions and agencies. SWI completed the study in time and made a detailed presentation of the same at the Guruvayur Municipal Council. The work was widely appreciated.

The report was handed over to the Municipality at a public function held on January 7. Prof.Pramod P.Thevannoor, Vice Chairman, SCMS Group handed over the report to Mr.K.P.Vinod, acting Municipal Chairman in the presence of Mr.K.V.Abdul Khader MLA, Prof.Santhakumari Teacher, former Municipal Chairperson and Dr.Sunny George, Director, SCMS Water Institute.

SCMS Water Institute presents the water audit report to Guruvayur Municipality

The Municipality will in turn submit the report to the State government and implement the recommen-dations made by the study.

The population of Guruvayur Municipality is only around 1 lakh but the number of pilgrims visiting this temple city every year is even higher than the entire population of Kerala State and thus water has become the most important resource limitation of this city.

SWI feels much satisfied that we won this project

through highly competitive government tender procedures and could complete the study winning appreciation from different sec-tions of the society, media and government officials. It is for the first time that a private educational institution is honoured by this local self government by arranging a public function.

She elaborated that transportation being one of the cross-cutting issues of the United Nations Sustainable Development goals it is also one where technology-driven solutions are considered prom-ising in getting around in increasingly congested cities. Ms. Ritter touched upon Smart City concepts that include sensor technolo-gies to monitor traffic flows and ICT systems to increase connectiv-ity in the transportation infrastructure, as well as an increased focus on fossil fuel-free public transport.

One of the key areas for urban innovation is mobility; making cities more walkable as well. Ms. Ritter emphasised that promoting a variety of transport options with a focus on public transport is a must. As most smart city planning put mobility at the core, this is an area where technology has a huge potential to make cities more sustainable and livable, she pointed out.
