Principal Team Report

Deb Gentle Rob MonkAshti Mullen Rebecca Williams

The Bunyip State Forest fires have had a devastating impact on some members of our community. Families in Tynong, Tynong North, Tonimbuk, Maryknoll, Garfield North, Bunyip North, Longwarry North and Labertouche have lost property, stock and in some cases their homes.

Thankfully, there has been no loss of life, this is largely due to the great work of the CFA, Police and the fact that so many people took the decision to evacuate at the right time.

We are working with families to support students with practical and personal assistance.

PROGRESS REPORTSThe first Progress Reports for 2019 are now available. These regular reports are an easy way of basing a conversation with students about their learning progress. It is most helpful when parents have these conversations with your children. Focus on areas where your child is doing well and areas for improvement. For example if your child has tasks not submitted for a subject, get on to Moodle and see what needs to be done. If you are not sure or if your child needs further support, then please contact the teacher to discuss how you and the teacher can work together to support your child.

We look forward to the end of term Parent/Student/Teacher meetings when you can meet your child’s teachers and raise any concerns.

The learning partnership between parents, students and teachers requires regular communication.

NEW LEARNING CENTRE AND CAFETERIAThe additional shelter to the north of the cafeteria is now complete. Students now have a large outdoor area as well as the indoor cafeteria space. We will be working with students to plan more seating and to landscape the area.

INCLUSIVE SCHOOLS We are very pleased to be the recipients of an Inclusive Schools Grant. This grant is specifically targeted at providing facilities, which support students who have difficulty engaging at school. We are using the grant to build a much needed facility for our Integration Program. This will be a purpose built space including a classroom, kitchen, laundry and bathroom with disability access. We hope work will begin in Term 2 and be ready to use in Term 3.

DOCTORS IN SCHOOLSThis is proving to be a very successful service for our students. Dr Halimah from Central Clinic Warragul has begun running a clinic for our students on Tuesdays. Students can book appointments online via Sentral.

COMMUNITY EVENTSOur College life includes many community events.

Opt Out Photo ConsentOpt Out Notice - Photographing, Filming and Recording Students

During the school year there are many occasions and events where staff may photograph, film or record students participating in school activities and events.

On 28 February, the Annual Opt Out Notice for Photographing, Filming and Recording Students and Use of Name and Student Work at Drouin Secondary College was emailed home to families. If we do not have your email on record, this Opt Out Notice was posted out.

If you have read this notice and are comfortable with the school using photos, video or recordings of your child and their name and student work as described above, you do not need to take any further action.

However, if you have decided that you DO NOT want images of your child to be collected or used by our school, please complete the Opt Out Notice and return it to the Communications and Publications Officer at the General Office. Only return this form if you DO NOT CONSENT.

Further information is available on the College website in the Drouin Secondary College Use of Name, Photographing, Filming and Recording Students Policy.

Parent/Student/Teacher MeetingsParent/Teacher/Student interviews will be occurring at the College at the following times:

Thursday 4th April 4.15 pm – 9pm& Friday 5th April 9am – 12pm

During the interview sessions the College does provide a crèche for young children to be looked after while you are meeting with teachers.

You will be able to book interviews via the Sentral Parent Portal from 9am Thursday 21 March by:

- Logging on to the Sentral parent portal: https://sentral.drouinsc.vic.edu.au/portal/login

- Once you are inside the parent portal, click on the “Parent Teacher Student Meetings” link which is across the top of the page or under the “Interviews” button.

- Select date and click times suitable for you.

The College has a priority to improve learning outcomes for all students in Years 7-12. This priority will not be achieved unless teachers, students and parents are working together. One way you can support the College in fulfilling this priority and more importantly support your child is to make sure you attend the Parent / Teacher / Student Meetings.

VCE STUDENTS

It is expected that all VCE students will make appointments to have interviews with their teachers. This interview time is critical to obtain individual feedback, discuss problem areas and strategies for improvement. Students will also get the opportunity to discuss issues of concern.

If you have queries please feel free to contact the College on 5625 1002.

Schools across Australia are being involved and taking action on the ninth National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA) on Friday 15 March 2019.

Drouin Secondary College is a NDA school and stands united against bullying and violence with school communities across the nation.

The theme for the 2019 NDA is Bullying. No Way! Take action every day.

The NDA gives schools the chance to take action and empower young people to be part of the solution when addressing bullying in their school community. It provides an opportunity to focus on bullying and the big changes we can make to create safer communities for everyone.

A number of classroom activities and information posts around the College will help to continue to deliver the message that Bullying in any shape or form is not tolerated or accepted at DSC, and that those who experience Bullying do have people who can help them and be advocates for them.

Year 12 Melbourne CampThe Year 12 Melbourne Discovery Camp was held on Thursday 7th and Friday 8th February. It allowed students at Drouin Secondary College to begin their final and most important year of schooling with an event that highlighted student pathways, promoted cooperative teamwork and an opportunity to unify the class of 2019. A range of TAFE and University campuses including Holmesglen, Monash, ACU, Melbourne, RMIT, Swinburne, Latrobe and Deakin were visited, depending upon student interests and the course, either VCE or VCAL, that they are undertaking. In addition, VCAL students used some of this time to complete activities that contribute to their course requirements, especially the visit to The Big Issue. All students had the experience of finding their own way around the CBD and using public transport to travel to the various venues, as well as the cultural experience of Lygon Street. They stayed overnight at St Mary’s College - one of Melbourne University’s residential colleges in Parkville, and had a wonderful presentation from Sonya Karras, TV/Radio Presenter, Podcaster and author “The Two Worlds of Your Teenager”.

Leos 4WD ShowThe DSC Leos were really well represented at the recent Lardner Park 4WD Show. The students were providing a trolley service to transport peoples’ purchases to their cars for a gold coin donation. There were more than 20 Leos attending and everyone had a great opportunity to get to know each other better. The session raised $360 towards PTSD Ward 17 at the Austin Hospital. Great effort by everyone involved and a special thank you to Mr Walsh and Ms Werner-Duffield, who came and supported the students too.

Mrs Gita Walker (DSC Leos Coordinator)

With the recent events of the bushfires we are faced with the harsh realities of life.

SchoolTV has some great expert advice to support us in these situations.

This month on SchoolTV - Grief & Loss

Grief is a natural response to loss. It might be the loss of a loved one, relationship or even a pet. The more significant the loss, the more intense the grief is likely to be. Children and adults grieve differently due to their developmental stage, and this can prove difficult for parents to understand.

Young children fluctuate in and out of the stages of grief rapidly, as they may not comprehend the permanency of loss or death. They express their grief more physically. Teens on the other hand, may not know how to express their grief and will need some space to process their loss. Some may choose to grieve alone, not wanting to stand out or be seen as not coping. Whilst others, who may have a greater understanding, can start to question their own mortality.

In this edition of SchoolTV, parents can learn how to acknowledge their child's feelings and the best way to support them through the grief. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this month's edition and we always welcome your feedback.

If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school for further support.

Food StudiesPancake Day

Thank you to our Food Team, Melissa, Ms Fanning and Lauren Smithers who served pancakes to hundreds of students who arrived early at school on Friday 8/3. Traditionally, Shrove Tuesday, or ‘Pancake Day’ marks the last day before lent, where people would use up foods in the house before the fasting period started. Unfortunately, we couldn’t do our pancakes on Tuesday, but pancakes are just as good any day of the week! We love cooking and through our Foods classes, we hope to inspire our students to do the same. We would love to see more students choosing our VCE subject in the future! Come and talk to us if you’d like to know more.

Food Pracs

Thank you to the many students who have been bringing their containers to practical classes. This shows you value our community and want to contribute to a sustainable future for us all. There is also a bonus ARCC award for those who remember containers, so please continue to bring them along each week.

Here’s a couple of pictures from the Food department in recent weeks. Well done to students for producing such great work! Our particular thanks goes to Mrs Fankhauser for her plums which we used in a Year 8/9 Food Glorious Food design brief.

YEAR 8 CAMP 2018The end of 2018 saw Year 8 students and staff heading to Melbourne for four days of fun in the city. For some, it was a chance to encounter the city they had not yet had a chance to explore, while for others it was a chance to re-visit some locations and share the experience with friends. We travelled by bus to our accommodation – a youth hostel in North Melbourne. We were exposed to the joys of tram travel, particularly those that come from hot days that turn into busy city nights in December, as we visited the Queen Vic Markets, the Shrine of Remembrance, Melbourne Zoo, Marvel Stadium, and many more.

Highlights included ice skating – where students quickly established whether they had good balance or not, Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre – where the obstacle course drew a crowd to watch Ms Bartlett’s attempts at getting across, and Eureka Tower – which had some students facing their fear of heights while others took in the beautiful views of the Melbourne nightscape. A private screening of Ralph Breaks the Internet at Village Crown was also enjoyed. Our final day at Melbourne Zoo saw the weather turn which was a pleasant change after the heat of the week. Early mornings and late nights meant we all came home tired yet pleased with the fantastic adventure we got to share!

Year 7 Camp RumbugOn Year 7 camp I had an absolute blast. But the stand out moment for me was when we did the rope course. I loved how most of the time on the rope course you were hanging over a mud pit or trying to balance (on a little raft, I guess you could call it) in the lake. It was temptation not to fall in because if you did you would get either muddy or soaked.I loved it!Connor Carmody

Camp Rumbug was amazing. The giant swing was an activity to remember, the adrenaline was massive and the sudden movement when you pulled the rope by yourself was also very exhilarating.Haylee Turner

A highlight of mine for the Year 7 camp (2019) would probably be my ‘activity group’. Yes, I know it sounds weird, but I had so much fun spending time with friends or new people, especially Dr Dunn! I was allocated to be in Group 10 (the best group!) and we annoyed every other group by being loud, and chanting ‘group 10, group 10…’ at every chance we could. Haylee, Charlotte H and I also were given Tim Tams from Dr Dunn for no apparent reason at 9:30 at night. I am very thankful to be able to have gone on this camp, it was a great experience.

Reading Reduces StressReading for as little as six minutes a day can reduce stress by 68%.

Scientific research on stress was conducted by Mindlab International with the following as a summary of their study:

• Reading reduced stress by 68%

• Music reduced stress by 61%

• A walk reduced stress by 42%

• Video games increased stress level.

The study involved exercises and tests to ascertain stress levels, followed by six minutes of reading, music, walking or video games, to ascertain the impact of these on the stress levels.

Clinical neuropsychologist, Dr David Lewis, who led the research summarised the findings with “losing yourself in a book is the ultimate relaxation” and engaging in a printed book alters “state of consciousness”.

DSC GO SKY HIGHWhat an opportunity, to attend the 2019 Avalon Air Show for free. That’s what eight lucky Year 9 and 10 students from DSC did. It was an early start to the day and a very hot day out at the Avalon Airfield, however it was certainly worth the effort. The enormous Air Force carriers were mind blowing and we were lucky enough to meet the female and male pilots and sit in the cockpit. Everyone on the displays were more than happy to answer questions and show everyone around. We visited bomb disposal units, medivac units, drone flying, satellite creators, maintenance vehicles, aviation firefighting trucks, cadets, robots and so much more. And of course there was the live flying of jets, carriers and formation displays. Next time make sure your name is on the list for this fantastic opportunity.

Excerpt from a longer story by Rhiannon Marriott: The sensation of sharp jolts ran throughout her, tears running down her cheeks. She wanted to scream and kick the man above her. Despite this she refused to let instinct take over. She knew what happened to those who misbehaved. They made sure everyone knew. Screams almost escaped her as the agony became worse, almost unbearable. Sniffling instead she tried to make herself as small as possible. Sinking as far into the dark corner as possible. The man in front of her turned his attention away from her. She relaxed slightly, happy to not have him watching her. His line of sight was now directed towards a lady, one that the small girl knew well. Although her facial features were hidden the short blonde hair gave away her identity. The heavy door closed and after a few awkward moments Sophie spoke.

"Don't you think we have done enough on her. She isn't even five yet." Her voice helped calm the girl’s nerves. Her eyes were red and sore from crying but tears no longer lingered in her eyes. The man sighed in annoyance as he ran a hand through his black hair.

Excerpt from Detective Browne and the Pirate Conspiracy by Cam Brown:The room was huge and circular, and there were sleek black jets set in rows. Each jet was identical; bird-like in shape with a very complicated looking cockpit and the M.A.R.A signature on each wing. The room had windows, or maybe they were supposed to be exit holes for the jets. Browne couldn’t tell, because there were metal roller shutters blocking out the sunlight.

Then Browne noticed the bodies.

There must’ve been thirty of them, each one was suspended upside down by the ankles, hanging from the high ceiling. Each body was wearing all black, even black masks, which made it hard to count them all in the dark. All of the bodies were limp, and still, as if frozen in time. They looked like countless humanoid spiders descending from the shadows above. There was no doubt that these people were dead.

NAPLAN PREPARATIONSYEAR 7 & 9 STUDENTS NEED TO HAVE HEADPHONESThis year our Year 7 and 9 students will again complete the NAPLAN tests on their netbook, instead of using a pencil and paper. They will need headphones for the NAPLAN tests. All students should have headphones, which are compatible with their netbook, as listed on the booklist.

We are asking parents to help this matter. Please make sure that your child has headphones that they bring to school. Headphones will be required for a state wide, on line NAPLAN practice test. For Year 7 students this will take place on Thursday 28th March. Year 9 students

will also complete an online practice test on Wednesday 27th March, and will need headphones. The practice test gives students the opportunity to experience the online testing system and see how it works. The practice test takes only 45 minutes.

Full NAPLAN testing will be conducted from 14th to 24th May. Students and parents will be advised further of the details of the tests.

The College would welcome the donation of spare headphones in good working order. Please drop them in at the Drouin Secondary College General office.

EVERY DAY COUNTS SECONDARY SCHOOL ATTENDANCE Going to school every day is the single most important part of your teenager’s education. Students learn new things at school every day – missing school puts them behind.

SCHOOL IS BETTER WHEN YOUR TEENAGER IS THERE Why it’s important We all want our students to get a great education, and the building blocks for a great education begin with students coming to school each and every day. Students develop good habits by going to school every day – habits that are necessary to succeed after school, whether in the workplace or in further study. Missing school can have a big impact on students academically and socially. It can affect their test results, including VCE & VCAL, and, just as importantly, it can affect their relationships with other students, and lead to social isolation. There is no safe number of days for missing school – each day a student misses puts them behind, and can affect their educational outcomes. Each missed day is associated with falling behind in subject topics and assessment tasks, and lead to fewer subject choices and may impact on achievement in years 11 and 12 and post-school pathways.

Getting in early It’s never too late to improve attendance. Even in the middle years, when school can seem the most challenging for students and when attendance rates can be at their lowest, going to school more often can make a big difference. Every day counts. Schools are there to help – if you’re having attendance issues with your child, speak to your school about ways to address those issues.

IN VICTORIA SCHOOL IS COMPULSORY FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE AGED 6 – 17 YEARS Student Absences The main reasons for absence are: Sickness – There are always times when students need to miss school, such as when they’re ill. It’s vital that they’re only away on the days they are genuinely sick, and setting good sleep patterns, eating well and exercising regularly can make a big difference. Family holidays - It's vital that holidays are planned during school holidays where possible, and not during the term. If you are planning to go on holiday during term time, make sure that you talk to your school in advance, and work with them to develop an absence learning plan. “Day off” – Think twice before letting your teenager have a “day off” as they could fall behind their classmates – every day counts. Truancy – This is when students choose not to go to school without their parent’s permission or skip out of school during the day. There can be many reasons for truancy; the best way to address this is for schools and parents to work together. While all absences can effect academic performance, DET’s statistics show that unexcused absences are a much stronger indicator of lower reading and maths achievement.

School refusal - School refusing children experience significant emotional distress not only when going to school but also at the thought of going to school; they may be absent from school for weeks or even months at a time. School refusal differs from truancy as children generally stay home with the knowledge of the parents and despite their best efforts to encourage their child to go to school. See: My child or teenager has anxiety

BEING AWAY FROM SCHOOL FOR 1 DAY A FORTNIGHT EQUALS MISSING 1.5 YEARS OVER 13 YEARS OF SCHOOL If your teenager is away If for any reason your teenager must miss school, there are things you can do with your school to ensure they don’t fall behind:

Inform the school via your teen’s Form/Home Room teacher or Year Level Coordinator

Find out what work your teenager needs to do to keep up.

Develop an absence learning plan with your teenager’s teacher and ensure they complete the plan.

Remember, every day counts. If your teenager must miss school, speak with your home room teacher or year level coordinator as early as possible. Openly communicating with your teenager’s school about all absences is a good way to prevent attendance issues being escalated to a School Attendance Officer. A School Attendance Officer is a Department of Education and Training Regional Director who has authority to follow up attendance issues. Chronic or ongoing attendance issues that are escalated can lead to an Infringement Notice being issued to parent/s. If you’re having attendance issues with your teenager, please let the year level coordinator, wellbeing coordinator, principal or other relevant staff member know so you can work together to get your teen to school every day.

TOP ATTENDANCE TIPS FOR PARENTS Schools want to work in partnership with parents – act early if you have any concerns by

contacting your child’s school and asking for advice and support

Remember that every day counts

There is no safe number of days for missing school – each day a student misses puts them behind, and can affect their educational outcomes and their social connectedness

Talk positively about school and the importance of attending every day

Open and prompt communication with your child’s school about all absences is a good idea

Avoid making routine medical and dental appointments during the school day or planning family holidays during the term

Seek help from your school if you are concerned about your child’s attendance and wellbeing. Schools want to work in partnership with parents to support student attendance and wellbeing.
