I request this because I am certain that I will not be able to perform well in the class. Contrary to my prediction of what the class would be, it consists largely of deciphering different instruments and types of notes in jazz music. I thought the class would be mostly about learning the history of many jazz genres and artists while making opinions of criticisms and interpretations of their work. In another year of my college life I would probably stick the class out, however, because I am cognizant of the difficulties of freshman year I am wary of continuing. I hope to take a different class in the African American studies department next semester that is more suited to my needs and capabilities.

Dear Committee,

I am requesting a late drop from the class afam:1000 from fall 2014. The class is only once a week on Wednesdays which made my perception of what the class would be like uncontested until later in the semester. I scheduled a meeting with my advisor to get the class dropped then but I had to wait until the next week to fit into the Professors office hours, and a time feasible for myself. Over the weekend I represented the University of Iowa in an interscholastic college debate tournament in Ogden, Utah. My partner and I, both freshmen, outperformed several competitors our senior. Because of out winning record we advanced to elimination rounds farther in the day on Monday and ended up returning home much later than expected, much later being 10:30 Tuesday morning. Had I been aware that the drop deadline was on Wednesday, I would have made a conscious effort to get everything done on Tuesday. Regardless, my ignorance is not an excuse and I will make sure to work within deadlines as I am expected in the future.

Thanks for the concern,
