anuary 21st 1968 – An American B-52 bomber carrying nuclear warheads has just crashed on the polar ice near the US military Air Base in Danish controlled Thule, Greenland.

A few days later, responsible governments classify the crash as a Broken Arrow scenario (nuclear accident) but proclaims the situation being under control. No cause for concern in relation to radioactive contamination or violation of foreign power’s sovereignty, nuclear policy. Hundreds of Thule workers are set to work, helping in the gigantic clean-up operation. After eight months, all traces of the crashed aircraft and the plutonium-contaminated snow are

gone. The case is closed.18 years on, while covering a

local workers compensation story, reporter Poul Brink, suddenly runs into suspicious circumstance linking back to the concealed 68’ nuclear accident. Apparently the full and true story about the crash lays well-protected deep under the Thule Bay’s ice cap and deep down the classified archives in the US.

The ambitious reporter launches an uncompromising investigation. FREE R ANGE’m taking a liberty by paraphrasing the saying by asking: is there substance in something called “zeitgeist”? And  do we know exactly what bits of past, what dreams of tomorrow make up this “today”? My main question concerning making films is how to depict this complex flow of sensations, associations, impulses, ideas and dreams that we call reality? How to make something out of it that would not find contentment in being merely a “story” but is alive and breathing, free from boredom and predictability, yet comperhensible as a narrative film? A good film is to my mind something that opens up possibilities of thinking and seeing that we were previously not aware. Never mind the subject matter of the film or the quality of analysis. Never mind the morality or violence, or the lies or truth. If I walk away from a cinema feeling that I had gained something experientially, I feel happy. I feel touched by something. The sad thing is that it very seldom happens to me these days. I would say that if filmmakers will not begin to dismiss the ubiquitous requirement to “dumb down” their work, imposed on them since script development until the distribution then we have failed miserably as a species capable of clear cognition. And why such requirement exists at all? The answer is obvious - rationalized greed. This exact rationale behind the “dumb it down” is our current zeitgeist, our present, our “today” and there is no area of contemporary human behaviour that is free from it. We stand with our backs against the wall. I see no other option than to fight it and “Free Range” is just that. A starter: a soft rangefinding jab with a left.

Karl Højby Hansen has lived the first 12 years of his life in a small conservative village in Denmark with his mother, grandmother and

Sawsan, a young Islamic girl in Karl’s class, takes him under her caring wings and tries to integrate him into big city life with all its slang and

hipness. When one of Sawsan’s homemade songs are being chosen for the biggest song contest in the country, held near Karl’s village, she faces opposition

from her family who don’t approve of her dream to sing. But Karl has other ideas, and with both of them heading in the same direction he hatches a
