    Brief # 3

    Self Directed Art Piece:

Create a piece of work EACH to no brief, and for no reason other than the process of creativity and artistic freedom.

The only rules are it must be a 2D physical object and must be 23cm x 16cm. Be brave.

    Evaluation

I found this brief really enjoyable, whereby I really feel I engaged with digital collage and experimentation with colour, imagery and pattern that I use and is evident across my Personal Practice and style. Furthermore, this brief put myself outside my comfort zone by working on several projects within a set time frame.

In particular, I was really very happy with the outcome of the 3rd brief, the Self Directed Art Piece and has since been featured in Grafik Magazine (Nov 2014).

    Research

Initially, research was carried out regarding the artist, Evian Christ and the track Duga-3, in order to gain a sense of musical influences behind the track. I hoped this would inspire me for the artwork and direction.

Photographs were collected from Tumblr of eerie and desolate scenes, whilst additional textures and stock photos were also added from my personal collection. These photographs with the music I believe synthesise perfectly in relation to the tone of voice and aesthetic.

    Brief # 1

    Self Directed.

Create a 12 vinyl cover from the email below:

    Process

Using experimental scratch brushes along with black and white photography an eerie, old, worn and rustic aethetic was created relaying the tone of voice and type of music being sold.

It was decided that no typography was included on the cover to allow for the imagery to really speak for itself and portray the feelings associated with the music.

    Concept

The final resolution for the vinyl cover represents the feelings and associations created when listening to the music - eerie spooky forests, loneliness and a sense of haunting.

Furthermore, the scratches featured represent the tone of the mix, whilst symbolising the 10hz tapping sound in a subtle manner, allowing the visual to speak for it-self.

    Outcome: Duga-3 Vinyl Cover

    Research

The band, ODONIS ODONIS, a three-piece band from Toronto, Canada were researched into, specifically looking at their music, previous artwork and website.

Much of their existing artwork is warm in colour, and appears to be abstract in nature opposed to relevant to the track, or title at hand.

    Development

A background image/pattern in two different colour variations were created. Out of the two Abi and I felt the red and yellow background had much more prominence and relevance to the band.

In regards to the body copy and type setting, Trade Gothic Bold was used, to ensure the typeface can be read/seen legibly and clearly.

    Concept

The concept for the gig poster for ODONIS ODONIS, was inspired by their previous artworks, and current colour scheme of their website, being warm, bold and brash, indirectly promoting the band and event.

    Collaboration Details

This particular brief was a collaboration between Abigail Nelson. Between us we gave ourself individual roles in order to complete the brief within the allocated time.

Abi worked on a conceptual background image, in turn creating the layered and toned base for the typography that reflects the band, their musical style and other pieces of artwork.

I worked on the type setting, allowing for the message to be clearly read over the background image.

    Brief # 3

    Self Directed

Create a piece of work EACH to no brief, and for no reason other than the process of creativity and artistic freedom.

The only rules are it must be a 2D physical object and must be 23cm x 16cm. Be brave.

    Research

Feeling inspired by the DR.ME presentation and the music I was listening too whilst working, a Tropical House Mix on Soundcloud, by Thomas Jack, I began collecting photography which I felt represented this in regards to colour, emotion, scenery and greenery.

With these I felt I had the creative freedom to manipulate and experiment with the photography collected to create a 2D physical object.

    Process

Using the photography collected, I began producing a digital collage using strips of images. Collage is a medium I enjoy working with so this allowed me to exercise my skill set further. Different width strips were used at different points to create further depth and contrast of colour, pattern and print.

Once I was happy with one single panel of print, this was then further copied and manipulated creating a layered image.

    Concept

The final outcome does not so much represent a concept, yet rather reflects my influences and musical associations at the time.

However, I feel the print is 90s, holiday inspired, kitsch, quirky, fun and would be a beautiful 12 vinyl cover for a mix tape, the print of a cushion or a phone case, cups and plates, wallpaper, notebooks and printed artwork, allowing this to be further expanded and promoted as a print suited to different markets and target audiences.

For purposes of this brief, I have contextualised the final resolution as a vinyl cover allowing for further uses to be visualised.
