DENTAL IMPLANTS
Are surgical components (usually metallic)which are inserted into the bone to support a dental prosthesis (crown or bridge)
BASIC TYPES OF IMPLANTS1\SUBPERIOSTEAL IMPLANT: implant placed under the
periosteum on top of the bone
2\TRANSOSTEAL IMPLANTImplant that penetrates entirely
through the bone
3\ENDOSSEUS IMPLANT:Implant placed into the bone
METALS USED FOR IMPLANTSTitanium and titanium alloys
PARTS OF DENTAL IMPLANT1\IMPLANT FIXTUREMetal cylinder placed into bone to
support the crown
2\IMPLANT ABUTMENT:The metal component that connect
the crown to the fixture
3\IMPLANT CROWNThe prosthetic restorative part
4\HEALING ABUTMENT:Temporary abutment placed on the
implant fixture to allow soft tissue healing
OSSEOINTEGRATION OF AN IMPLANTTHE PROCESS OF BONE GROWING
INTO INTIMATE CONTACT WITH AN IMPLANT.
HOME CARE FOR IMPLANTThe implant surface inside the oral cavity
can accumulate plaque and calculus leading to inflammation of the soft tissues surrounding it
If not treated this inflammation and bacterial invasion can progress to the bone surrounding the implant and can attribute to its loss.
So ,it is very important for the patient with implant to maintain good oral hygiene
HOME CARE AIDS:1\DISCLOSING AGENTS: help the patient to visualize the
location of plaque.
2\BRUSHES:1-gentle sulcular brushing2-interproximal brushing3-regular soft bristled tooth brush4-power brushes can be used
3\DENTAL FLOSSES:
4\WOODEN PLAQUE REMOVALSWooden sticks and tooth picks can
be used carefully
5\ANTIBACTERIAL AGENTS:Chlorhexidine mouth wash for 1-2
weeksPhenolic mouth rinses
Hygiene visits1\the patient should return to the dental
office regularly at 3-4 month intervals for routine implant assessment
At the visits 1\ask the patient if there is implant
mobility , ,bleeding of peri implant tissue ,pain with chewing
2\inspect the peri implant soft tissue(if there is swelling ,redness ,bleeding , recession
3\review the oral hygiene technique with the patient
4\routine probing is not recommended (if it must be done , use plastic probes with light touch)
5\when performing scaling and root planning to a patient with implant ,use plastic or graphite instruments
Thank you.
