Gary Anaka Brain Health & Wellness Educator

Gary is a Special Education Teacher, Author, Brain-Based Learning Facilitator, Advocate for Health and Wellness, and an inspirational public speaker. He is married and lives on Vancouver Island.

Gary is the top Brain-Based Learning facilitator in British Columbia today. He has been a certified facilitator since 1997, receiving on-going training from the Jensen Learning Corporation, a world leader in teacher training in the new field of Applied Educational Neuroscience.

Since 2006, his presentations have expanded into the new, exciting field of Brain Health and Wellness. He believes in wellness through education. He is the author of a valuable, well received publication entitled Brain Wellness: The Secrets For Longevity.

Gary is a dynamic public speaker, famous for his audience engagement, energetic and lively sessions. His presentations are always filled with humour and optimism to support everyone, from babies to seniors, to become lifelong learners, and to maintain a healthy brain throughout one's life. His practical suggestions, whether about how the brain learns or how to stay healthy, can be applied immediately in any work or life situation.

He is a motivational speaker and teacher, from the classroom to the conference keynote level, whose sessions have been called, both professionally and personally, life changing.

Grant Aune Advantage Fleet Services

Grant, an RCMP officer for 24 years, specialized as a Collision Reconstructionist, dealing in particular with large commercial vehicles. He has been declared an “expert” by the courts, in the field of collision investigation, analysis and reconstruction and has testified in Provincial, County and Supreme Courts of British Columbia, Alberta and the Yukon covering subject matters related to motor vehicle collisions and professional standards for commercial drivers.

Prior to starting Advantage Fleet Services (AFSI), Grant worked for the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia in their Commercial Loss Prevention Program and was responsible for the Southern Interior Region of British Columbia. He worked directly within the commercial transportation industry, dealing with companies having fleets, to reduce their risk of actual and financial loss and provided driver training and collision reviews for clients.

AFSI has provided a platform for Grant to help improve safety standards/practices and advance safety concerns for his clients and ultimately all users of our highways. His passion for road safety makes him committed to expanding on the skills and abilities of professional drivers.

Darren Beattie Conifex

Darren is a safety professional with 27 years of experience in the field of safety and over 37 years of work experience (he feels he started working way too soon). He also has several years of life experience (including being hit by a car on two occasions and numerous bumps, bruises and near misses).

He grew up in northern BC (the best place on earth – according to BC people) and worked in a variety of natural resource industries (because he couldn’t decide what he wanted to be). He started in safety as a first aid attendant, dealing with the outcomes of unsafe conditions and unsafe habits (he credits this experience for unknowingly choosing his eventual career).

He spent 10 years (more like learning on the job while making lots of mistakes) as a safety coordinator in the wood products manufacturing industry. He moved to Prince George to work as a safety officer (an underpaid, much maligned, under- appreciated job) for WorkSafeBC. In his role as a safety officer he learned safety application in a variety of work environments. He also gained experience & knowledge of learnings shared with his co-workers from all over BC. He obtained his CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professional) designation in 2004. He was a co-creator and presenter of the Supervising for Safety course (the course is available online and on video – even though he feels he has a face for radio).

He utilizes his experiences, knowledge (both good & bad), and creativity to work with others to improve safety performance of individuals & organizations. His goal is to find the elusive holy grail for creating a culture of safety (he enjoys the search). He still resides in Prince George, BC and still has the occasional incident (now he can use a scat chart to determine the root causes); most of them involve loss of property (otherwise known as wrecking or losing something). He is still learning. He is currently the Safety Director at Conifex Timber Inc.

Tim Baillie Drop It And Drive

Tim is the Co-Founder and Operations Director of Drop It And Drive, an organization with a mission to end distracted driving by making it as socially unacceptable as drinking and driving.

A retired 27-year veteran and Captain of the Surrey Fire Department, Tim has worked on well over a thousand motor vehicle collisions with extensive rescue experience. Tim’s experiences have led to the belief that people have to learn the real consequences of their actions. Too many times others have to suffer for the avoidable actions of people. Increasingly, people focus on their rights with little attention to their responsibilities to themselves and others.

Karen Bowman Drop It And Drive

Karen is the Founder and Director of Drop It And Drive, an organization with a mission to end distracted driving by making it as socially unacceptable as drinking and driving.

With 20 years’ experience in the public and private sectors in British Columbia and Ontario, Karen’s background includes business administration & consulting, project management, and communications. As a crash survivor herself, Karen founded Drop It And Drive in October 2010 with the idea to take a proactive approach to ending distracted driving by increasing education and awareness.

The D.I.A.D. education campaign became a particularly personal cause after Karen’s then 8-year-old daughter was injured by a distracted driver less than three months later.

Rod Heitrich CAN Telematics Inc.

Rod is the Chief Customer Officer for CAN Telematics, a telematics solution provider, and has over 20 years of experience in the forest industry. As Chief Customer Officer he has a well-defined vision of what providing a world class customer experience entails. Rod has been a member of many safety and safety audit committees and served as safety chairman during his tenure in forestry. That, combined with his experience in technology and telematics, provides a unique perspective.

Reynold Hert BC Forest Safety Council

Reynold joined the BC Forest Safety Council as Chief Executive Officer in March 2009.

Employed in forestry since 1978, Reynold has advanced through the ranks of the industry from being a harvesting area manager at Procter and Gamble to roles as vice president of Canadian Lumber and later as vice president Canadian Forestlands for Weyerhaeuser.

More recently, Reynold led Western Forest Products (WFP) as president and CEO for four years ending in late 2008. In that time, he oversaw a significant improvement in its safety record.

Reynold strongly believes that safe businesses are the best businesses. Forestry operations that integrate safety as a way of doing business can see improved results including fewer injuries, lower costs, higher productivity and better worker morale.

He has a B.Sc. degree in forestry from the University of Toronto.

Adrian Sunduk Log Hauler

Born in Saskatchewan, Adrian graduated in 1966 and began log hauling that winter with his father in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. In 1971 he went into business with three partners, hauling across the Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba. In 1991, Adrian headed west and took a break from hauling only to restart in 2000 because he missed it! He joined Gorman Bros. where he is still today, bringing his total log hauling experience to 40 years! Adrian attended an Anatomy of a Rollover (AOR) session on November 3, 2014, which changed his thinking about seat belts. Adrian, who previously believed the best way to avoid injury in an accident was to jump from the truck, learned how and why he should wear his seat belt. Adrian changed his habit and began wearing his seat belt all the time, instead of just on the highway. Only a month and a half after attending the AOR session, Adrian was in an accident while hauling. It was at 1 km on Curtain Rd, roughly 25 km off road from Summerland, on a stretch of road that should have been graded, but wasn’t. The road was sheer ice. Adrian tried a few times to make the corner, but as he tried the last time he knew he was going over the edge. Adrian’s truck rolled over three times down the embankment before stopping, and the logs narrowly missed the truck. He says if he hadn’t been wearing his seatbelt he would have died! Adrian and his wife have been married 46 years they have four kids, six grandsons, and twin granddaughters. Adrian enjoys fishing, traveling and playing sports.
