THEAACRANNUALMEETING2018!
The AACR Annual Meeting highlights the work of the best minds
in cancer research and medicine from institutions all over the
world. This meeting presents the many scientific discoveries
across the breadth of cancer research – from population
science and prevention, to cancer biology, translational, and
clinical studies; to survivorship and advocacy. You will form new
collaborations and learn how to apply exciting new concepts,
tools, and techniques to your research. This year’s program, with
the theme of “Driving Innovative Cancer Science to Patient Care,”
will be a comprehensive, cutting-edge scientific event that you
will not want to miss!

And the Winner Is...Eppendorf & Science Prize for Neurobiology
Congratulations to Flavio Donato on winning the
2017 Eppendorf & Science Prize for his work on the
driving forces that orchestrate the maturation of
circuits representing space in the brain. Dr. Donato’s
work has revealed that, during development, stellate
cells in the medial entorhinal cortex are the source of
an activity-dependent instructive signal necessary for
the maturation of those neurons that give us a sense
of where we are. This finding proves the existence of
autonomous, intrinsic drivers that guide the matura-
tion of widespread regions of cortex from deep within
the brain. Unravelling the unique contribution of these
specific neuronal populations to the function of neural
circuits will advance our understanding of how the
brain processes abstract cognitive functions.
The annual US$25,000 Eppendorf & Science Prize for
Neurobiology honors scientists, like Dr. Donato, for their
outstanding contributions to neurobiological research.
Flavio Donato is the 16th recipient of this international
award. He will be presented with the Prize at a ceremony
held during the week of the 2017 Annual Meeting of the
Society for Neuroscience in Washington DC.
You could be next to win this prize.
If you are 35 years of age or younger and currently per-
forming neurobiological research, you could be next to
win the 2018 Prize. Deadline for entries is June 15, 2018.
Neuroscience 2017
The Eppendorf & Science Prize for Neurobiology is an
international research prize of US$ 25,000. It is awarded
annually to one young scientist not older than 35 years for
the most outstanding neurobiological research based on
methods of molecular and cell biology.

be part of a worldwide network.
Reach for the stars
Profit from excellent research conditions in Germany
The Alexander von Humboldt Professorships are Germany’s way of creating a beacon effect and energising its
research landscape. Every year, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation is offering ten of the world’s leading
researchers up to five million euros each to create new or consolidate existing internationally visible research
focus areas at German universities.
www.humboldt-foundation.de
Academics of all disciplines are eligible for an Alexander
von Humboldt Professorship, provided that they are
established abroad and recognised internationally as
top-class researchers. They will be nominated by German
universities – where appropriate in cooperation with
non-university research institutions. Each Alexander von
Humboldt Professorship will be sponsored for a period of
five years on the premise that the university presents a
convincing strategy to sustain the position once the funding
period has come to an end.
This will allow new, long-term research groups to be
established, conducting cutting-edge international
research. The programme is financed by the Federal
Ministry of Education and Research. The Humboldt
Foundation actively promotes equal opportunities and
therefore particularly welcomes nominations on behalf
of leading female academics.
Closing dates for nominations:
15 April and 15 September
