1. Pre-Trip Planning

Rental Requirement. The minimum age to rent a car from Hertz in Australia is 25 years for most car groups. Drivers aged 21 – 24 years will be eligible to rent, subject to an age surcharge. At time of rental, you must present a valid driver's license issued from country of residence that has been held for a minimum of one year (three years in Tasmania) and an International Driving Permit (IDP) if required.

Book Before Departure or Upon Arrival in Australia? Why worry about the possibility of getting a vehicle at exorbitant rates (due to vehicle shortage) or run the risk of not getting one or the type of vehicle you need when you arrive in Australia? It is strongly recommended that you pre-book your car before you depart. Ensure that the vehicle reserved best suits your needs and itinerary. Upon arrival, pick up your car and you’re off to start your fun-filled holiday.

Pickup at Airport or Downtown? It really depends on your flight arrival time, itinerary and group size etc. You will save on airport surcharge for pick up at downtown locations but do factor in airport-city transfer arrangement. For pick up at airport, it is essential to provide flight details during reservation. This will ensure that your vehicle is not released in the event of flight delays.

Drive Immediately Upon Arrival?Unless you are familiar with Australia’s driving conditions, try to avoid immediate long-distance driving upon arrival. Have sufficient rest and acclimatise to local weather and road conditions.

Car Rental Rates.Read the fine print. Know what is included and what is not in the car rental rates. E.g. Limited Mileage or Unlimited Mileage, Taxes, Collision Damage Waiver and Vehicle Excess Amount. When shopping for rates, make sure you compare apple-to-apple. At Hertz, we offer Affordable Rates which include Unlimited Mileage and Collision Damage Waiver (subject to excess).

Insurance Coverage.Know what your basic insurance policy covers. Hertz Affordable Rates include Collision Damage Waiver (subject to excess), which provides coverage for accident damage to the Hertz Vehicle and/or Third Party Property, such that in the event of an accident, your liability is limited to a reduced amount of loss or damage. To enjoy greater peace of mind, ask for Accident Excess Reduction (AER) or Maximum Cover (MAX) option to further reduce your liability for accidental damage or loss to the minimum.

Sedans, SUVs or MPVs?Check out the range of vehicles available from car rental companies. In Australia, Hertz has a large fleet of young and latest model vehicles ranging from Economy through Fullsize, Wagons, Minivans to Luxury cars to suit any need. For off-road driving, a four wheel drive or all wheel drive vehicle is strongly recommended. Go to Hertz Vehicle Guide at www.hertz.com – see how many adults/children and luggage you can fit into your choice of vehicle.

Why not add a little fun to the drive? Rent a vehicle from our Hertz Fun Collection such as the Mini Cooper. Or help make the world a little greener. Rent the petrol/electric Toyota Hybrid Camry sedan from the Hertz Green Collection. It is environmentally-friendly and fuel efficient. Easy on the wallet and suitable for families and small groups travelling together!

GPS Satellite Navigation System. With the Hertz Satellite Navigation system as your guide, you will never be lost. Using the Global Positioning Satellite, Hertz’s state-of-the-art navigation system has smart visual and voice prompts to tell you exactly where you are at any time and gives you turn-by-turn guidance on how to get to your destination. Drive with confidence, no matter where you are. No more fumbling with maps, hunting for street signs or having to ask for directions. There is less wasted travel time for business executives and more peace of mind for holiday makers. Opt for Hertz NeverLost® Satellite Navigation system unit for a stress-free self-drive holiday.

Child & Booster Seats.Appropriate safety seats are mandatory for infants/children and each of them is considered as an occupant. You can either bring your own or request for an infant, child or booster seat depending on the child’s weight, size and age. Hertz offers only Government approved child restraints (subject to availability) at a nominal charge. A maximum of 2 seats can be fitted to any vehicle.

One-way/Inter-city Rentals.Driving from Sydney to Brisbane? Adelaide to Melbourne? No problem! Hertz has more than 200 locations throughout Australia. You can rent a vehicle from one location and drop it off at another. Inter-city fee may apply. Please check at time of reservation.

You can find superb offers in “Special Offers”

section on Hertz.com

2. Making Your Car Rental Reservation

Assess Your Needs.Where in Australia would you like to go for your upcoming self-drive holiday? Who are you travelling with? When are you going? Would you prefer to go D-I-Y? Or purchase a great value self-drive holiday package from your travel agent?

Travel Fairs.Look out for travel fairs organized by airlines, tourism organisations and travel agencies. They are great platforms to check out what’s new in the marketplace, grab special offers and pick up your travel brochures, guides and maps! Check out the mega NATAS (National Association of Travel Agents) Travel Fair which takes place in February and August each year.

Speedier Service & Greater Savings.Spend more time on your vacation. Less time renting a car. Sign up as a Hertz #1 Club member. You will get to enjoy year-round discounts at participating locations worldwide and receive email updates on the latest seasonal promotions. Reservation is hassle-free and speedy – we have your personal and contact details, driving licensenumber and your preferred choice of vehicle stored in our centralised database. When you make future reservations with us, you will be off the phone and website faster. Your rental agreement will be pre-filled. Membership is FREE!

Apply online at www.hertz.com or contact your local Hertz office for an application form.

International Driving Permit (IDP).The IDP is recognized worldwide as a valuable document, identifying motorists as legally-licensed drivers and may prevent any inconvenience when renting a car or when driving in a foreign country where the language of your local driving license is not commonly used in the country of your self-drive destination. The IDP must always be presented with your local driving license.

Singapore driving license is in English and is recognized for driving in Australia (IDP is not required). For foreigners who possess non-English local driving license, please check with your local embassy on a document translating your local driving license to English.

Maps & Driving Directions.Arm yourself with good, current maps and driving directions, especially if you plan to go off the main roads. Check out your point-to-point route options online at websites like www.maps.google.com and www.travelmate.com.au

Rain or Shine?Check out the latest local weather at http://weather.yahoo.com and pack your clothes accordingly.

Local Traffic Conditions.Make sure you are familiar with the local traffic laws and common road signs.

E.g. There are roads throughout Melbourne that are known as “fairways”. Yellow lines and tram signs along these roads give trams priority at certain times.

E.g. Pull over and stop when you see a police car flashing lights behind you. Stay IN the car and wait for the police officer to approach you. Getting OUT of the car is seen as a form of retaliation and the police will react accordingly.

Travelling with Children.Children soon get over the novelty of travel. To prevent backseat fights and tears, they will need to be entertained. Some suggestions on how to achieve this:

• Bring some of their favourite toys, music CDs and snacks.• Play some road games such as looking out for certain licence plates or buildings. • Create a travel diary or journal – a wonderful activity that will not only keep your children busy on a long trip, but it will preserve their memories for a lifetime. • Stop for frequent breaks, preferably where there is a playground.

Carsickness is common in children. To keep this to a minimum you should drive as smoothly as possible and avoid overfeeding your child.

Documents Required.Drivers must present the following documents at the rental counter:• Booking confirmation• Valid Driver's License and International Driving Permit (IDP) if required• Valid credit card• Passport

Additional Drivers.Ensure that he/she is listed on the Rental Agreement by registering at the rental counter. There is no coverage for damages by drivers not registered. A nominal fee may apply.

Refuelling Options. Hertz provides you with a full tank of fuel when you collect your vehicle and options are available for replacing the fuel you use.

• Fuel Purchase Option (FPO) - Selected locations allow you to pre-purchase the tank of fuel at a discounted/competitive price, at the start of rental. You may return the vehicle with as little fuel as you feel comfortable with. This option eliminates the need to refill the tank before returning the vehicle. There is no refund for unused fuel, therefore the less fuel in the tank upon return the more money you save. • Hertz Refuelling Service - A refuelling service is offered for your convenience when FPO is declined and the vehicle is returned with less than a full tank of fuel. Hertz will refill the vehicle for you and the refuelling service charge will be added to the cost of the rental. This option is available at selected locations and fuel charges may vary by location.

• Refuel the tank yourself and return the vehicle with a full tank of fuel.

Inspect the Car.To avoid being charged for damages on the vehicle not caused by you, it is important that you inspect the vehicle inside and out. Look out for any damages (even small scratches and stains) not in the defect list provided. Notify the counter staff and ensure any damage is noted in writing.

Check the Fuel Level. The car will come with a full tank of petrol. Before moving off, check that the fuel indicator shows full.

Vehicle Features & Controls.Take your time. Familiarise yourself with the headlights, windshield wipers, hazard warning lights, heater and other controls. Know where they are and how they function before you hit the road – do not be afraid to ask for assistance if needed.

Emergency Roadside Assistance.Ensure that your car rental company provides 24-hour emergency roadside assistance and that your emergency phone numbers are within easy reach (not in the car boot). Arm yourself with a cell phone (with extra batteries) on long-distance trips.

Hertz offers a 24-hour roadside assistance service throughout Australia. The emergency telephone number can be found on the front of the Hertz rental wallet and inside the glove box of all Hertz vehicles.

Your Personal Belongings.Do not leave any personal belongings in your rental vehicle. Securing them in the trunk, under the seat etc., are not effective measures to protect your property. The only effective way is to take your items with you.

Drink Driving. It is a serious offence to drive under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol whilst operating a vehicle. Random breath testing can be carried out at any time by police. Do not drink alcohol or take drugs before or whilst driving a vehicle.

Fuel Economy. The condition of the vehicle, how it is driven and where it is driven affect fuel consumption. The following points are worth considering if you wish to economise on fuel:

• Plan your trip to avoid delays such as peak hour traffic or scheduled bridge closures.• Avoid overloading your vehicle; distribute the weight to be carried as evenly as possible.• Avoid long periods of idling. When held up in traffic, switch the engine off if it is safe to do so.• Avoid full throttle acceleration and severe braking. Drive as smoothly as possible.• Ensure the tyres are inflated to the correct pressure.• Make sure that the handbrake is fully released when the car is mobile, and that the foot-operated brakes are not dragging.

Toll Roads & ChargesTolls are the renter’s responsibility and must be paid directly to the tollway operator.

QueenslandThere are various toll payment options. The most convenient way to pay for your toll charges is to call the tollway operator or visit their website. Please ensure you make toll payments before, or up to 3 days after you travel through your first toll point.

Sydney & MelbourneWhile tolls are the renter’s responsibility, Hertz offers a “no-fuss” solution through its association with tolling provider, Roam Express. Simply opt-in to Roam Express Rental e-Pass when picking up your vehicle to pre-register your details for automatic credit card payment of tolls. When you travel on a toll road, a Rental e-Pass will be activated and a nominal one-off start fee will be applied, after which tolls and a video matching fee will automatically be charged at each toll gate or tolling point. If there is no travel on a toll road, you will not be charged the video matching fee. This option provides peace of mind for you, not only by taking care of toll road fees automatically, but also by eliminating the risk of penalty for non-payment.

Driver Fatigue.Fatigue can be as dangerous as drink driving or speeding, and contributes to many fatal accidents on long stretch of highways. While driving, exercise your eyes by reading road signs or shifting the focus of your eyes to different parts of the roadway. Leave a small gap in the window for circulation of fresh air. Try to ensure that at least 1 other person you are travelling with can drive – alternate drivers to relieve boredom. Otherwise, STOP every 2 hours to stretch your legs, get a caffeinated drink and some fresh air. Try to time your day’s travel so that you arrive at your overnight destination in time for an unwinding period, a shower and a relaxed evening meal.

Fuel Stops. You should plan ahead for fuel stops. Some petrol stations do not operate around the clock and have limited credit card facilities. Have a chat with the locals and find out where best to top up your fuel and replenish water/snacks. Petrol is sold by the litre in Australia. Prices are higher in remote and country areas thus it is advisable to fill up your tank before venturing to the countryside.

Bush Fires or Floods.Try to check road and weather conditions on a daily basis. There could be unforeseen conditions (e.g. temporary closure of highway due to forest fire). Give yourself more time to plan for alternative destinations or routes.

Lost Out There/Vehicle Breakdown.Do not leave the vehicle under any circumstances – a missing vehicle is easier to locate than missing people. In case of a vehicle breakdown, refer to the information on the 24-hour roadside assistance service that is provided with your Hertz car. Depending on the severity of the breakdown, a replacement vehicle may be made available.

What to Wear.Wear comfortable clothes and non-slip soled shoes and have a pair of sunglasses to minimise sun glare.

Speed.Drive within designated speed limits. Speeding is a serious offence. As the speed limits vary from State to State, it is best to adhere to the speed limit signs posted along all major roads. As a guide only, the top speed limit in most states is 100km per hour and 40 to 60km per hour in built-up areas.

5. On the Road

Sudden Equipment Failure. This rarely happens but it is always good to know the basic handling techniques so you are more equipped psychologically to react to such situations:

• Tyre Blowout – ease your foot off the accelerator, keep a firm grasp on the steering wheel and pull off the roadway.• Brake Failure – if your brake pedal suddenly sinks to the floor, pump it to build pressure. If that does not work, use your emergency brake. Shift your vehicle into a lower gear to slow down.• Steering Failure – ease your foot off the accelerator, turn on the emergency flashers and come to a slow stop. Brake gently to prevent vehicle from spinning.• Stuck Accelerator – hook your toe under it to free it. If it does not become free, shift your vehicle into neutral and brake gently to slow down.

To Stop or Not?Do NOT pick up hitchhikers, under ANY circumstances.

Bumped from Behind?Do NOT pull over and stop, especially in a secluded or dark area. Drive to the nearest public area and call for police assistance.

Obstacles on the Road.Take note of wildlife roadsigns warning motorists of the dangers of wandering native Australian animals (wallabies, wombats, emus, etc.), especially at dawn and at dusk. A collision with a kangaroo will inflict a lot of damage not only to the marsupial but to the vehicle you are travelling in. When you see them slow down and do not sound your horn as it may startle them. You may need to stop and let the animals go past you or move slowly pass them.

‘Stop’ or ‘Give Way’ Sign.A driver facing a ‘Stop’ or ‘Give Way’ sign must give way to traffic on the left and right, and from the opposite direction. At a ‘Stop’ sign, you must bring your vehicle to a complete stop. You must also give way to pedestrians who are crossing the street into which you are turning, whether turning left or right.

‘Hook Turn’ Sign.‘Hook Turn’ signs are found at a number of intersections in Central Melbourne. The signs may be at the side of the road or hung from tram wires, so be alert in checking for these signs. If you want to turn right at one of these intersections, you must make a ‘hook turn’. To do so, begin your right turn from the left lane.

‘Railway Crossing’ Sign.Stop, look and give way to approaching trains when you see a crossbuck ‘Railway Crossing’ sign with possibly light signals, an audible alarm or barriers. It is commonly found on country roads, and in some Australian cities where there are trams services.

Use Your Indicator.A ‘turn right’ indicator signal must be given before you pull out of the kerb. Indicators must also be used whenever turning or changing traffic lanes.

Headlights.Headlights must be utilized while driving between the hours of sunset and sunrise. In built-up areas you must not use the high beam. On the open road, dip your headlights within 200 metres of an approaching vehicle or when the on-coming vehicle’s lights are dipped (whichever is the sooner).

In most Australian States, hidden speed cameras and mobile radar units are utilized to enforce speed limit laws.Railway Crossing Signs

Roundabouts.Drivers entering a roundabout must give way to traffic already on, entering or leaving the roundabout if there is any risk of a collision. Decide before you enter the roundabout if you are going to turn right, left or go straight ahead.

T-junctions.At T-junctions a driver approaching an intersection along the terminating road must give way to all traffic on the continuing road at the top of the T piece unless the other traffic is faced with a ‘Stop’ or ‘Give Way’ sign.

Unbroken Lines.Do not cross double unbroken lines or an unbroken line on your side of a broken line. When driving on a road marked with lanes, you must keep your vehicle entirely within a lane. When changing lanes, only do so when it is safe, and signal your intention.

Overtake.Do not overtake when:• Approaching the crest of a hill• Approaching a pedestr ian, school crossing or intersect ion• At a blind bend• There are double unbroken lines or an unbroken line on your side of the center line

Parking. In major cities, parking areas will often have pole signage advising of parking restrictions. Make sure you read them carefully as some public parking areas are limited to certain times and durations. Parking fees can be made via meters or ticket vending machines. Most accommodations have on-site parking for guests and many parking operators also offer secured short and long-term parking.

Driving in theNorthern Territory & Western Australia

New South Wales & VictoriaCar Groups. It is important to choose a car that is suitable and safe for driving in Alpine areas especially during winter. SUVs and crossovers are certainly advised but there are also some sedans and wagons that are every bit as weatherproof as SUVs and will burn less fuel. Check at time of reservation for any restrictions on car groups.

Extra Coverage.Additional liability protection may be necessary for travelling to Alpine areas during the gazetted snow season where snow chains are required. Hertz offers SNO Cover, which provides coverage for damages while travelling to these areas (conditions apply). For maximum coverage, opt for Hertz MAX Cover to reduce accident damages excess for damage to the vehicle, including tyre and/or windscreen to zero.

Daylight Driving.Travel in daylight hours whenever possible. It is difficult to judge distances in snow at night and black ice is also harder to spot. If whiteout conditions occur in daylight, it is not recommended to drive.

Pack Warmly. It is also a good idea to keep comfortable warm clothing and shoes in the car – you never know when you may need to alight to solve a problem.

Be Prepared for Snow. Make sure that you have the necessary snow equipments and tools when required. For normal commuting to and from the ski fields, a pair of snow chains, a windscreen scraper and shovel are essential.

Bitumen Roads. Most major roads in the Northern Territory are now sealed with bitumen and provide excellent driving conditions.

Unsealed Roads. Some attractions can only be reached by way of unsealed roads requiring 4WD vehicles.

Road Conditions.Occasionally in the Wet Season (October through March) roads may become impassable through flooding. It is not recommended to attempt to travel through a submerged section of road unless it is absolutely safe to do so. Some crossings are often deeper than they appear. Travelling fast through water can be dangerous and cause vehicle damage for which the renter is responsible. Distances.Distances are vast in the Northern Territory and Western Australia, therefore do not underestimate travelling time required. Check distances carefully when planning your itinerary. Allow an average speed of 80 kilometres per hour in your calculations for travel on bitumen roads.

Fuel.Always ensure fuel requirements are estimated conservatively. Petrol stations can be several hundred kilometers apart.

Daylight Driving. It is strongly recommended to avoid travelling in the early morning, late afternoon or early evening. Apart from sun glare, wildlife is most active at these times, and will often cross a road without warning. Hitting livestock is the most common type of accident in the outback and can cause serious damage to a vehicle.

Night Driving.Animals wandering on the roads make night driving dangerous. Therefore, never plan to drive at night.

Road Trains.Road trains can be up to 50 metres in length and weigh in excess of 50 tonnes. Caution should be shown when overtaking.

Water. There is little likelihood of becoming lost or stranded if visiting the main attractions in the Northern Territory or the Kimberley, however we recommend customers always carry adequate supplies of drinking water. As a general rule 20 litres per person is recommended to allow for the possibility of a breakdown.

Wandering Animals.Nearly all of the Northern Territory and Western Australia is cattle station country. Hence most roads are UNFENCED which means cattle, buffalo, horses or kangaroos can wander across the road at any time.
