1. Vehicle steers itself while looking for obstacles.
2. It can accelerate and stop based on traffic conditions
3. A computer system manages the navigation using mapping data

1. Driverless technology will be perceived as desirable as it debuts in luxury vehicles initially.
2. It will increase household incomes by eliminating the need for personal car ownership for many.
3. It will save lives by dramatically reducing accidents.
4. It will improve our quality of life by reducing delays.
5. It will benefit our ecology through reducing use of fossil fuels.

What are the Opportunities for NZ?
1. Reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels
2. Dramatic reduction in carbon emissions
3. Employment & foreign currency earnings through business innovation
4. Significant reduction in road deaths and associated costs and societal impacts
5. Environmental benefits & associated quality of life gains
Car imports totalled almost $3 billion in 2010, while net oil imports were nearly $3.5 billion. These items represent around 15% of our total imports and contribute to our significant and sustained balance of payments deficit.

A Driverless Planet is inevitable…
But…I want to see a future New Zealand which has capitalised on this paradigm shift to the fullest
extent…
So how does New Zealand change the future?
Create a nation-wide think-tank
• Develop a Transition Strategy to guide investment
• Evaluate opportunities & challenges
• Provide industry-backed advice to policy makers
• Create a communications strategy to answer the questions NZ’ers will have
Change policy to make NZ a natural
partner
• Our unique advantage is our ability to act at a country-level
• NZ can be an ideal proving ground for international partners
• We need to signal this intent and actively seek our partnerships
• Australia is a natural partner with the benefit of a vehicle manufacturing sector
Innovate with our legal regime to
enable the future
• Tackle the legal and regulatory issues as leaders
• Capitalise on the unique advantage which ACC provides NZ
• Focus on creating the friendliest legal environment amongst first-world nations
Target Govt investment to
foster innovation
• Use Govt seed money to boost research within Universities and private industry
• Encourage technology start-ups which target this emerging market
• Engage directly from Govt to large foreign investors looking to accelerate their deployments
