Balfour Beatty is a world-class services business operating across the infrastructure lifecycle, with leading positions in major markets. Operating in over 80 countries, in diverse markets and economies, we provide the assets that societies need to function, develop and thrive.

Driving is a core part of Balfour Beatty’s business and managing risk on site and on the road is a high priority for the organisation. Robert Lindsay is the Driver Risk Manager for Balfour Beatty Plant & Fleet Services. His team runs the Centre of Excellence, managing everything to do with driver risk, from licence checking to driving training and performance improvement.

Safety is a top priority, with Balfour Beatty’s Zero Harm campaign operating across the group, and the Driver Risk team is always looking for new ways to improve driver safety.

We were able to help using our telematics service, Drive from O2. Drive is now used across the whole of the Balfour Beatty commercial fleet to monitor the performance of drivers and vehicles

“Zero Harm is a theme that’s been running throughout Balfour Beatty for a number of years,” Robert Lindsay says. “A good safety record is invaluable to us – it enables us to keep our people safe, so they can continue to do the job they’re good at. And it can help us to be a sustainable and profitable business too.”

Choosing the right supplierDrive from O2, powered by Masternaut, gives Balfour Beatty a number of benefits, including the opportunity to monitor the performance of their drivers and vehicles.

“We chose Drive because we wanted to consolidate the existing relationships we had with tracking and telematics suppliers,” says Robert Lindsay. “We wanted a supplier who could bring us a significant range of functions but with the consistency of a single supplier. We already knew about the Masternaut solution but we were attracted by the partnership approach with O2. We haven’t seen this being done by anyone else. Drive gives us the flexibility of a wide range of elements, with an end-to-end service wrap.”

The benefitsBalfour Beatty uses Drive from O2 across the business.

Drivers get immediate feedback on their driving using an in-cab feedback bar, helping them to directly reduce risks. Robert Lindsay explains: “Drivers can see immediately when their braking, cornering or accelerating is classified as harsh, so they can make immediate adjustments. And beyond that journey, they can get feedback and trends over a week or month and track improvements over time.”

Contract managers in different divisions get feedback on vehicle performance and efficiency in their areas which has a direct impact on running costs. And they can see dates, time and location information from vehicles attending client sites. This helps them to provide transparent reporting which is supporting them build stronger relationships with clients.

At the same time, the Plant & Fleet Services Centre of Excellence has the data it needs to support the various businesses in achieving better fleet performance. Robert Lindsay says: “We have a number of different methods for improving driver behaviour. We reward and recognise those who have been performing well. And we’re able to provide training interventions for those that maybe aren’t driving to the standard that we expect.

“We train thousands of drivers each year through our on-road coaching, driver workshops, e-learning modules and driving simulation methods. Drive from O2 supports our training and driver improvement programmes and means we can make sure that these resources are being accessed by the people who need them most.”

The savingsCost reduction is one of the major benefits that Balfour Beatty has gained through the use of Drive from O2.

Says Robert Lindsay: “We’ve managed to see reductions in fuel use through cutting engine idling and improved driver performance. We already have a series of fantastic case studies to demonstrate the improvements we’ve made to our incident statistics across the fleet following sophisticated training programmes, now we are able to use telematics to monitor fuel savings as well.”

And going forward, Balfour Beatty has plans to develop its solution even further, as Robert Lindsay explains.

“We’re really pleased with the information and usage of the data so far, but we want to push forward and use more of what’s available at our fingertips. We have a complete roadmap in place with O2 to develop our solution even more, so we can make further efficiencies or apply the technologies to different asset types.”

As Robert summarises, “The majority of Balfour Beatty’s 30,000 UK employees drive. With Drive from O2, we mitigate some of this risk, and help Balfour Beatty to operate more effectively, efficiently and safely.”

“Drive from O2 supports our training and driver improvement programmes and means we can make sure that these resources are being accessed by the people who need them most.”
