Men and women who ride motorcycles often insist there’s nothing quite like riding.

Riding a motorcycle not only can be exhilarating and provide a feeling unlike any other, but it also requires patience and discipline for beginners and veteran riders alike.

Riding a motorcycle carries a certain stigma of being dangerous, but that’s only the case for inattentive riders who forget their responsibilities while on the road. The following are some tips that beginners can put to use when hitting the open road.

Gear up &stay geared up. Beginners often don’t have a problem gearing up, as many are understandably nervous and therefore less likely to leave necessary equipment in the garage. Always wear a helmet, motorcycle jacket, riding gloves, riding boots and motorcycle pants when riding. Many riders fall into the trap of wearing less gear once they become more acclimated to their bike. But gear should be worn whether you have been riding for 50 days or 50 years.

Prepare, prepare, prepare. There’s no such thing as too much preparation when riding a motorcycle. Motorcycle training guides are valuable tools of information for beginners. These instructional videos or reading materials provide insight into all aspects of riding a motorcycle, and no beginner should get on a motorcycle without

first watching or reading a motorcycle training guide.

Practice away from other motorists. Don’t start riding on a freeway until you have grown accustomed to riding the bike at slow practice speeds you’ve honed away from other motorists. Empty parking lots make ideal training grounds. Once you feel comfortable in the parking lot, gradually move to roads without heavy traffic, such as residential neighborhoods. Once you’re truly comfortable on the bike, then you can hit the highway.

Go to class. A motorcycle safety course might be a requirement in some areas but not required in others. Regardless of whether or not it’s required, take the class anyway. Such classes might cost a few hundred dollars, but their value far exceeds that cost. A safety course prepares riders for anything they might encounter on the road. Just be sure to enroll in a class that teaches accident evasion.

Get the right size. Some riders envision themselves at the helm of a big hog, while others see themselves tooling down the highway on an ultra-light bike. But don’t go to extremes in either direction, at least not with your first motorcycle. A heavy bike might be more stable, but it’s also harder to control. A lighter bike might feel easier to control, but it’s best to wait until you have had a year or two of experience before buying bikes often referred to as “crotch rockets,” which are sporty and fast.

How Often to Change

Motor Oil?Much confusion or misinformation exists about how often drivers need to change their vehicle’s motor oil. Though it pays to change motor oil to keep the engine operating optimally, such changes don’t need to be done as often as the average driver thinks.

As engines have become smaller, more fuel-efficient, longer-lasting, and better for the environment, engine maintenance guidelines have changed. And motor oils have changed as well. There are additives to help reduce engine wear and maintain the oil’s viscosity, and detergents in today’s motor oils help wash engine parts and prevent sludge from forming.

For years the 3,000 mile oil change interval has been the standard practice. While this may have been adequate for older cars and less advanced motor oils, today’s vehicles can actually go much longer between oil changes.

Drivers looking to prolong oil changes can turn to their owner’s manual for the suggested oil change schedule for the make and model. Many have guidelines depending on how often a motorist drives his or her vehicle. Those that routinely drive through muddy or dusty areas may want to change their oil more frequently. Others may be able to change the oil every 5,000 to 7,500 miles.

Drivers should not be scared off by the look of their oil. The detergents and additives in motor oil are created to

suspend debris in the oil so it doesn’t foul up engine parts. Therefore, the oil may look darker. This does not necessarily indicate that the oil needs to be changed more frequently. Stick to the schedule in the manual.

Individuals seeking confirmation that they can go longer durations between oil changes can have a motor oil analysis done. This will confirm the quality of the oil after having driven a certain amount of miles.

The 3,000 mile oil change interval is no longer the industry standard thanks to advancements in both engine and motor oil technology. Chances are most vehicles can go longer between oil changes and still continue to drive well.

Teenagers have heard scores of tales about the dangers of driving drunk. Now they may be able to see the effects of alcohol on their driving abilities -- but in a safe way.

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services says that 26.4 percent of underage persons (ages 12 to 20) use alcohol and 17.4 percent engage in binge drinking. Alcohol use remains extremely widespread among today’s teenagers. Nearly three quarters of students have consumed alcohol, and more than

just a stolen sip here and there. MADD Canada states that more than one thousand fatalities occur annually due to impairment from drugs or alcohol each year. Many accidents occur behind the wheel of a car.

Although statistics on paper and even the sight of a banged-up vehicle can be a wake-up call for some teens, the reality is many are still drinking and getting behind the wheel. A relatively modern invention may

help to change all that.

Impairment goggles give drivers a first-hand view of what it’s like to drive under the influence. The goggles vary, but many simulate a blood-alcohol content (BAC) of approximately .08 to .15. In both the U.S. and Canada, a BAC of .08 or higher is considered above the legal limit. Drivers donning the goggles are given the idea of what it’s like to be intoxicated -- sometimes twice the legal limit.

Teens at Waianae High School in Hawaii were able to put on the goggles and attempt to drive through a practice course in a parking lot. Many found they were unable to maneuver through the cones, hitting many of them in the process. Although it may seem like a laughing matter, several students were sobered by the thought that those cones could’ve been people injured or killed by an impaired driver. Other schools across the country are using goggles as part of driver education training.

A leading manufacturer of impairment goggles is Drunk Busters of America, LLC. The company says their goggles simulate reduced alertness and decreased reaction time, mirroring the symptoms one experiences while intoxicated. Wearers also experience problems with depth perception and coordination. The company was started by Curt Kindschuh, a former law enforcement employee who began the Wisconsin-based company to help schools, law enforcement agencies and traffic safety organizations stop people from driving impaired.

Driving while under the influence of drugs, alcohol or even distracted driving, including looking at a cell phone, claims the lives of thousands across North America. Impairment goggles are a tool that can be used to help educate teenagers of the very real dangers of getting behind the wheel while drunk.
