Friday, March 31st, 2006 was aday of celebration at JasperEngines & Transmissions. Thecompany’s longest-servingAssociate, Gervase Schwenk, cele-brated 60 years of service with thecompany.

Serving as JASPER’s Chairmanof the Board, Gervase, 84, neverexpected such a celebration, ashundreds of company Associatescrowded in the Indiana Tool & Dieloading docks to join in the festivities.

“When I first started, I met aman who worked with Mr. Ruxerat his Ford dealership for 12years,” said Gervase. “I almostdropped my teeth... I thought thatwas an eternity.”

“And now 60 have gone by,” headded. “I am totally fascinated.”

The Mayor of Jasper, Indiana,William J. Schmitt, proclaimedMarch 31st as “Gervase SchwenkDay” in the city. Mayor Schmittalso presented Gervase a Certifi-cate from Indiana Governor MitchDaniels congratulating him on hisachievement. “Your work ethic isan inspiration to all of us,” saidMayor Schmitt, reading from theGovernor’s Certificate. “And yourcompassion, in so generously lend-ing a helping hand to your fellowHoosiers, reveals you as the epito-me of Citizenship.”

Mayor Schmitt added, “Yourgood works have not gone unno-ticed, as you have improved thelives of many in ways that go farbeyond the contributions you havemade in the economy of our state.”

“I am totally at a loss as towhat to say,” said a surprisedGervase Schwenk, “but the suc-cess of this 60 years I am going toattribute it to all of the great peo-ple that I’ve had the opportunityto work with during this period, and I thank you very much formaking it possible.”

A World War II Veteran,Gervase Schwenk was hired byJASPER founder Alvin C. Ruxeron April 1st, 1946, as a bookkeep-er. Gervase soon became involvedin all phases of Jasper Engines &Transmissions, serving as generalmanager, building and construc-tion planner, and equipmentdesigner. A self-taught computerprogrammer, Gervase has writtencompany computer programs, andtoday manages the company’sinvestment plan and financesamong other activities.

“Gervase was always the per-son you didn’t see out front lead-ing the cause. That’s because he’salways behind the scenes gettingthings organized,” says Jasper

Engines & Transmissions president Doug Bawel.

Friends said Schwenk has awell-earned reputation for thrifti-ness. A co-worker said Schwenk,an avid skier, would always befirst on the ski lift in the morning, and the last to leave the slopes atnight so that he would “get hismoney’s worth,” even though as asenior citizen he got in free.

But it’s that same thrift, alongwith innovative thinking, thatmakes Gervase “the answer man,”the one everyone turns to whenthere is a problem.

Gervase’s skills as a business-man, and his love of community, have caused many organizationsin Southern Indiana to seek hiscounsel. He currently is a boardmember of Memorial Hospital andHealth Care Center in Jasper, aboard member of the VincennesUniversity Foundation, an execu-tive committee member of theSisters of St. Benedict ofFerdinand, Indiana, and a formerboard member of the CatholicFoundation of SouthwesternIndiana and the Dubois CountyCommunity Foundation.

Gervase and his late wifeMarie, had seven children, Helenof Franklin, Indiana, Alan ofNashville, Indiana, and Mike,Ray, Carol, Rita and Ralph all ofJasper.

sensitivity of their rods are second tonone. A very good all around versatilerod is Kistler’s Helium LTA HeavyAction. I use this rod with a spinnerbait, buzz bait and even some jig fishing.

When flipping and pitching, I preferto use a 7’6” Kistler Helium LTAHeavy (Model: He76HC) or a HeliumLTA Extra Heavy (Model: He76XHC)rod. In light vegetation/wooded cover

With so many different rods on themarket it’s difficult to choose the rightone. Here are some general rules that Ifollow: Rule #1 – Use the longest rodpossible. Rule #2 – When using braid-ed and/or fluorocarbon line, use aheavy action rod. Rule #3 – Whenusing monofilament line, use an extraheavy action rod.

I prefer Kistler rods because Ibelieve the engineering, quality and

by Chad Morganthaler, JASPER Fishing Teamsituations, I’ll use a 15-20 lb. Maximafluorocarbon on the Helium LTA Heavyrod. I’ll also use 50-65 lb. braided lineon the same rod when fishing in heavyvegetation such as weed mattes. On theHelium LTA Extra Heavy rod, I’ll use a20-25 lb. Maxima monofilament linewhen fishing around light wood coverand docks.

I also particularly like the 7’11”Kistler Helium LTA Heavy rod for flip-ping and pitching into heavy cover situa-tions like vegetation mattes, lay downand bushes. The parabolic bend in therod is absolutely perfect for these situa-tions. When paired with braided or flu-orocarbon line, the combination is alethal weapon.

Kistler’s continual strive to be on topof the market has produced two new rodlines, the Magnesium series and theHelium 2 series. The Magnesium rodscost less than the Helium series, butwithout sacrificing the quality. TheHelium 2 series is a new blank that issuper lightweight and very sensitive, butit has a higher price tag than the regularHelium series. I use this rod, and it’swell worth the price.

Remember choosing the right rod forthe job is key to any successful fishingtrip.

85% of Vehicles Need You Right Now!The following article is from page 6 of

the February 2006 issue of UNDER-HOOD SERVICE magazine.

If you’ve been in business for a while,I’m sure you are aware of National CarCare Month and have probably participat-ed in a vehicle check-up event (where youdo free vehicle inspections in a parkinglot or fire station). With roughly 150,000independent shops across the country, how many vehicle check lanes do youthink were conducted in April of 2005?50,000? 25,000? 10,000?

The answer is 400 official events, andthis was the highest number ever. Therewere probably a few dozen more wherethe inspection forms were not returned tothe Car Care Council, but I wouldn’tguess the total exceeded 500. From whatI hear from shop owners who participatedin these events, they’re not only a greatopportunity to attract new customers, butalso a way to support a local communitycause. Plus, they can help make driving a

safer experience for all of us. Statisticsfrom last year’s events show 85% of thevehicles inspected had a failure of at leastone part or system.

The Car Care Council is committed togrowing the number of events held eachyear and wants to help you get organized. They’ve developed a new CD and DVDwith extensive information and marketingmaterials to help you get involved. TheDVD features a 12-minute “how-to”video with step-by-step instructions onhow to plan and host a vehicle check-upevent. The CD includes a comprehensiveevent planning guide, complete with sam-ple press releases, radio spots, cameraready ads, samples of vehicle check-upevent inspection forms, brochures, logosand more.

To request a copy of the two-disc set,go to www.carcare.org.

I’ve heard from some shop ownerswho are hesitant to have a check-up eventbecause they don’t have the personnel ortime to be at an event. Not to worry. We

are preparing a list of high schools andvocational-technical schools from our“Tomorrow’s Technician” magazine read-ership who are willing to help. If you areinterested in participating with a school, send an e-mail to: [email protected] I will help to arrange it.

The check-up event will help to edu-cate your current customers and potentialnew customers about why a well-main-tained vehicle is safer and more fuel-effi-cient, and also serves as the perfect intro-duction to your shop. Marketing yourbusiness to the consumer takes an invest-ment of time and money, but is crucial foryour success. A vehicle check-up eventdoesn’t need to be complicated, and canbe a nice first step to improve your shop’sperformance.

Congressional support for the Motor Vehicle Owners’Right to Repair Act (H.R. 2048) has received more than100 sponsors. This was announced in April by KathleenSchmatz, president and CEO of the AutomotiveAftermarket Industry Association (AAIA).

“This is a significant milestone in our efforts toobtain passage of right to repair legislation,” saidSchmatz. “Support for the bill continues to grow quicklyas more and more members of Congress learn the factsabout the bill. We want to thank these 102 legislators fortheir support of right to repair legislation and for convey-ing the importance of this legislation to their colleagues.Supported by a coalition of over 40 national and stateorganizations, passage of the ‘Right to Repair Act’ isvital to preserving the right of consumers to choosewhere they have their vehicles repaired. AAIA remainscommitted to either passage of the legislation throughCongress or the development of an effective non-legisla-tive agreement that ensures the aftermarket will remaincompetitive now and into the future.”

The “Right to Repair Act”, which was originallyintroduced by Representatives Joe Barton, (R-Texas),Edolphus Towns, (D-NY) and Darrel Issa, (R-CA),would require the car companies to make the same serv-ice information and tools capabilities available to inde-pendents service providers that they make available totheir franchised dealer networks. Architects of the“Right to Repair Act” have added new language to clari-fy that car company trade secrets are protected unlessthat information is provided to the franchised new cardealer. The new language also clarifies the responsibili-ties of the Federal Trade Commission in enforcing thebill’s requirements.

You can find out more about the “Right to RepairAct” by logging onto www.jasperengines.com and clickon the “Right to Repair” banner at the bottom of thehome page.
