I. TOP HOLE DRILLING

• REFERS TO THE SHALLOW SECTION OF THE WELL NORMALLY HAVING UNCONSOLIDATED FORMATIONS

• A BASE IS PREPARED• CELLAR FOR LAND OPERATIONS

• FIRST HOLE DRILLED AND CONDUCTOR CEMENTED OR FIRST CASING PILE DRIVEN FOR BOTH ONSHORE & OFFSHORE. [THIS STRING PROVIDES A BASE FOR THE DIVERTER]

• SURFACE HOLE IS DRILLED AND THE SURFACE CASING RUN AND CEMENTED [SURFACE CASING PROVIDES A BASE FOR THE BOP PACKAGE AND PROTECTION FOR POTABLE WATER ZONES].

• REFERS TO THE SECTION OF THE WELL BETWEEN SURFACE TO THE RESERVOIR SECTION(S)

• INTERMEDIATE CASING IS SET ABOVE RESERVOIR.

• PRODUCTION CASING IS SET ACROSS RESERVOIR SECTION

Typical Casing Configurations

Conductor

Surfacecasing

Intermediatecasing

Production casing

Production liner

Functions1. Conductor (20”-30”) to protect loose, near

surface formations and enables circulation of drilling fluid

2. Surface casing (13-3/8”- 20”) to provide blowout protection and prevent loss circulation

3. Intermediate casing (9-5/8” - 16”) to isolate unstable hole section and loss circulation, low pressure and production zones (often set in the transition between normal to abnormal zone)

4. Production (4-1/2”-9-5/8”) to isolate production zone and contains formation pressure in the event of tubing leaks

5. Liner (4-1/2” - 13-3/8”) to improve hydraulic performance during deep drilling and to allow the use of larger tubing above the liner top

6. Tieback string to provide additional pressure integrity from the liner top to the wellhead

FISHING

• Fish is an object left in the well bore during drilling or work over that must be recovered before work can proceed.

• Eg. of fish – parted drill pipe, lost bit cones
