WINDELLAMA PROGRESS ASSOC. HALL Inc.

REPORT FROM WINDELLAMA PROGRESS ASSOC. Things have been a little quieter at the hall lately, the cold weather has slowed us all down. Plans are in hand for a working bee to replace the leaking sheets of roofing iron on the toilet block and to finish off the concrete and paving work around the hall. A date has not yet been set, however, we hope to finalise the arrangements shortly.

Susan Harris, a councillor from Goulburn Mulwaree Council, has expressed an interest in addressing a meeting of the Association. President Cathy Meehan has invited her to attend our next meeting on Tuesday 19th August. All members of the community are invited to attend. Bring your questions and/or complaints about the running of the Council. The meeting will, as usual, starting at 2 p.m. There will be refreshments following the meeting.

DON’T FORGET “JUST TRIVIA” on August 9th. Bookings are not essential, however, it would be helpful if we had an idea of how many we are to cater for. As usual we shall have separate entertainment for the children.

Landcare Update

About twenty members of our Landcare group turned up to the working bee at Oallen Ford on Saturday 28 June when we did some more work on the preservation of the site. It was a very productive day and everyone worked very hard - five hundred and fifty trees were planted and thirty tonnes of rocks were moved into place! Special thanks to Greg Knights for the back hoe operation. Needless to say the numerous sweet things provided for morning tea, and the barbeque lunch, were well received. The handsome portable (?) toilet, supplied by Lloyd, and the sunny weather helped to make it a great day.

Windellama Landcare has been approached by Wollongong University who are offering to help us by providing student labour for one of our erosion control projects. Seventeen American students will be involved and on September 6 they will be planting Lomandra on a severely eroded area at Oallen Ford. They will be accompanied by lecturers Peter Klapaise, Nick Gill and Christine Erikson, each having an ongoing interest in the Windellama district by studying the sociological impacts of Serrated Tussock and Bush Fire.

This will not be a normal Landcare working bee – the next activity will be announced in the Landcare Update in the September edition of the Windellama News.

Two colonies of dung beetles have already been given new homes – at Shirley and Merv Cornish’s Adrook Farm and at Ian Proctor’s farm. Two more colonies will be distributed in Spring.

On SATURDAY 2 AUGUST, TREE EXPERT, IAN McARTHUR from SOUTHERN TABLELANDS FARM FORESTRY NETWORK will be at “Adrook” to give a talk and demonstration on tree planting and pruning at 11am and 1pm. Please take advantage of Ian’s expertise and try to be at one of the talks. Cost of the pine trees is yet to be announced, but will be ‘at most’ 50c per tree. Keep warm!

Windellama Historical Society Dung Beetles

Windellama Landcare are trialling Dung Beetles on 4 local properties. The 4 properties will receive 4 colonies of different species of Dung Beetles. Hopefully 2 winter active species and 2 summer active species will be released at each property by early 2009. So far 2 colonies of Bubas Bison (winter active species) have been released. The money for this trial was donated by the Sydney Catchment Authority, who we thank. Dung Beetles will benefit all farms that have grazing animals on them. Disposing of dung, aerating the soil, improving water absorption, less run-off, fewer flies, better pastures and fewer internal parasites. These Dung Beetles will spread by themselves after release, but when the original properties numbers build up, they will be harvested and released to other properties. To help the Dung Beetles build up numbers, it would be advisable to use Dung Beetle friendly drenches and pour-ons, eg, Cydectin. Some drenches and pour-on will destroy your Dung Beetle colonies, so please use Dung Beetle friendly drenches and pour-ons. The Muffet family exhibition at the Museum continues. Exhibits include a number of arte-facts collected and used by the Muffet family over the last 120 years. It is planned that the next exhibition, beginning in August, will be all about Post offices in the area. The Museum has an early cookery book com-piled by Emily Gegg, “Mum Gegg” which was donated by Emily’s daughter-in-law Dinah Gegg. The recipe book was written about 1910 and is also on display in the Museum. The Museum is open on market days – the third Sunday of each month. Come and see the new machinery shed at the Museum which houses various items of farming equipment in-cluding an old wool press. There is a selection of Windellama local history books and books by local poets for sale in the Museum, as well as bookmarks and postcards with images of early Windellama.
