Michigan entrepreneurs file more than 3,000 patents annually and consistently rank in the top 10 states for patents granted. Michigan ranked sixth for patents granted in 2008.

• 70 percent of the research performed at Michigan universities is conducted in the Detroit region. Life sciences research accounts for 63 percent of the research conducted within the region’s universities.

• Michigan companies know innovation is the key to returning Michigan to prosperity. In 2008, R&D spending stayed steady even while profits were down.

• Michigan ranks second in R&D intensity (R&D/GSP).

• In 2008, only seven countries surpassed Michigan in patents granted.

• In 2007, The University of Michigan ranked second in university R&D spending and was the seventh top patenting university for 2006.

• There are more than 1,800 companies conducting R&D in the Detroit region.
