STP COMMUNITY NEWS

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: Participants from the schools, CAP and school heads give the day a big thumbs up! Let us show you how to make self-watering planters; publications from CAP for the avid urban gardener.

LEADINGTHE WAYAt Straits Quay, school children lead the way in demonstrating how to make urban gardening work.

The Think Green Pop-Up Booth is a collaboration with Straits Quay to showcase and share with a wider community what the students have learnt through the Think Green programme.

On 31 Jan 2015, visitors to Straits Quay were treated to some free urban gardening advice and tools by the school children who trained under Think Green Urban Gardening project for the past year.

The children taught visitors to make their own self-watering recycled planters using PET bottles which they can then take home and use immediately.

Last year, the children (all from schools in the surrounding communities like SK Tanjung Tokong, Tadis Ar-Rasyiddin, SJKC Hun Bin and SJKT Azad) learnt how to make these themselves during the monthly activities held at the Think Green Urban Gardening centre at Straits Green, a public park developed and maintained by E&O.

Visitors also learnt how to propagate herbs and were given herb cuttings to take home and get their own gardens started with this initiative.

The Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) was also on hand to provide tips and information on growing your own food.

THE CHILDREN TAUGHT VISITORS TO MAKE THEIR OWN SELF-WATERING RECYCLED PLANTERS USING PET BOTTLES WHICH THEY CAN THEN TAKE HOME AND USE IMMEDIATELY.

THE WEB OF LIFECAP share the effects of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) with school children at Think Green workshops viaa game.

The demonstration is used to help participants understand how specific plants and animals depend on one another for food and thus the importance of protecting every species on earth.

The very act of spraying pesticides kill not only the pests but also other organisms which are beneficial to the soil. The Web of Life game demonstrates how human activities disrupt the flow of the food chain and how it leads to the bioaccumulation of POPs in humans and mammals which are high on the food chain.

One of the educational games CAP organises for school children training at the Think Green Urban Gardening centre is the Web of Life. It helps the children understand the food chain and the impact of POPs on it.

Pictures of various organisms, plants, animals and energy sources are clipped to the clothes of each participant. String is then passed from participant to participant to show the inter-connectivity of the food chain.

CAMERA, CAMERA,ACTION!Who would have thought that the passion of four photographers could have resulted in such a priceless collection of cameras and lenses? A must-visit for all photographers.

Housed in a colonial bungalow at the junction of Burma Road and Jalan Transfer, the Asia Camera Museum is a treasure trove of cameras old and new. It boasts more than 1,000 cameras and accessories featuring the big names in cameras from its heydays capturing black-and-white post-war moments till present-day digital dominance. You can literally trace the evolution of the camera from the boxed camera obscura to the DSLRs we are so familiar with.

From antique Leicas to Kodaks, early Yashicas and Minoltas, cameras to lenses, accessories to the early video recorders, this museum has them all. What is of great fascination are two themed rooms, one with artefacts donated by the 60-year old Siow Seong Studio in Penang before it closed down and another, a replica of a dark room where one can see all the equipment and chemicals used to develop black and white as well as colour photographs.

Stepping into the mock-up of the Siow Seong Studio is like stepping back into time. From the camera (which uses glass negatives) to

the props and dressing table, most Malaysians above the age of 40 would be reminded of the experience of patronizing photo studios of this kind on the big days of their lives: birthdays, graduations, weddings.

The arrival of digital technology heralded the slow death of such establishments. The bridal houses took away the wedding sector of their business while the government departments robbed them of the passport and IC photo part of the business as well.

There are many rare finds in this museum including a few pieces which are more than a century old like the Magic Lantern (or old optical lanterns) which project images from a transparency and a 165-year old camera.

The Museum is the passion of four men: Steven Tan, Mac Tan, Lee Keng Soon & Lim Kim Cheei. Their beloved collection is the result of three decades of painstaking curatorship and collecting. A visit to the Museum is worthwhile even for a non-professional photographer as it is a great introduction to the fascinating world of images and the capturing of them.

MORE THANMEETS THE EYE

PENANG PERSONALITY

This extremely versatile individual shares with Watercolours what it was like playing a leading role in the field of photography in Penang. Born in George Town,Song Jin Tek shows no signs of slowing down.

Packing more into his 77 years than most people half his age, Song Jin Tek has weathered changes in technology which would have defeated most cameramen. Instead he embraced each innovation as they emerged and is now still garnering the kind of international awards that he has been collecting since 1983.

He had a rough start to life. Leaving primary school with only four and a half years’ education, Song was sent to Alor Setar to work in kopitiams till he was 18. He then joined the police force and left three years later due to a misunderstanding between some

villagers and his colleagues. He was about 20 then. Returning to Penang, he worked in a bar.

He said, “My boss was an old man and asked me to join him to manage the bar. Penang was a free port at that time and many sailors visited us. They brought their cameras to show me and I was curious about how they worked.

That’s where the interest began.” He bought his first camera in 1976, a Yashica, which cost him RM70.

He recalled, “I saved for it. At that time people thought that only the rich can own cameras. My first

roll of film turned out all blurred! I didn’t realize that I needed to adjust the lens on the camera and focus first. So with the second roll I tried again. Nobody taught me photography but every good photographer is my teacher.”

It is exactly this spirit which has stood Song well as he changed with the times to more sophisticated cameras to today’s digital technology and computer wizardry. He observed others at work and he was not afraid to experiment with composition and lighting.

PENANG PERSONALITY

Song said, “I applied to be a member of the Photographic Society of Penang. I started to learn the techniques. After a few years, I started entering competitions and winning prizes. Soon I was qualified to enter international contests. But I didn’t win anything, I hadn’t reached that standard yet.

“Then I got an invitation from Singapore to enter my work. I won a gold medal. That convinced me to continue. In the end I won five gold medals that year. I was the first photographer in Penang to be recognised at an international level.

“Soon my friends from KL and Penang asked me to help them to win prizes. So I got them some instructions and together we participated in these competitions.”

Song became a professional photographer in 1986. “Back then Penang had very few professional photo studios. Someone asked me to take photos for advertisements. I had to think about it because to enter competitions and to do commercial work are two different things. After much persuasion I did it but I didn’t charge because I was not confident. It was for a jeans ad. The next thing I knew I

saw it up on a poster! By the third time I charged for my services,” he beamed.

Later he started indoor photography and picked up the trade learning through trial and error. He started his commercial studio and did a lot of product photography.

Way back then Song also knew how to develop film – black and white as well as colour. After a while he made his own darkroom to develop his films. He said, “I even learnt how to print colour photos in my studio, and had to work like a blind man in the dark room because the red light can affect colour film.”

Time and again, Song’s resilience and entrepreneurial spirit saw him adapting and learning new skills: “When I entered international competitions, I had to send prints, but prints were expensive, postage was also expensive. So I started to send slides rather than prints. But how to duplicate these? I bought chemicals and experimented. Eventually I did it. I had two months to try and try. Naysayers say it’s not possible, that it can’t be done.”

“One day my slides won a gold medal. After that photographers

“NOBODY TAUGHT ME PHOTOGRAPHY BUT EVERY GOOD PHOTOGRAPHER IS MY TEACHER.”

came to me, hotels as well. Sometimes I needed to reduce the slides into different formats for the slide projector because hotels tend to shoot in large formats. In 1990 I stopped all my photography. And then digital photography arrived in 2000.”

Song embraced digital technology just as he did anything that arrived on the scene. He even taught himself new computer skills which he employs to great success.

Today, at a sprightly 77, Song is still invited to give talks, the most recent one at the Johor Bharu Photography Society. He gets requests to follow him on shoots but admits that logistics can be difficult to manage.

His achievements have been recognised not just by his Malaysian peers but by the Photographic Society of America on several occasions. He shared, “I’ve been included seven times in the Top 25 photographers in the world, 1984 in the Top 10 and in 1999 I made the Top 9.” And he added, “I was the first Malaysian to be awarded with a PSA-5 Star by the Photographic Society of America.”

FEATURE FEATURE

Falling in love with Seri Tanjung Pinang, Pam and Christian Mueller have made Penang their home and now they are sharing their love for good design with their new shop,5.4° North.

Affable Pam Mueller is Malaysian while her husband, Christian is German. Both lived abroad for the past 26 plus years before moving to Penang with their three children in August 2014. Watercolours

asked Pam how they came to establish this very beautiful business which started operations in mid September 2014.

Q: What gave you the inspiration for this business? We purchased an apartment in Quayside at a roadshow in Hong Kong. When we came for the handover with the intention to sell, we fell in love with it and its environment! So we decided to renovate and keep it.

Next step was furnishing and decorating it… and that’s how the idea came about. There weren’t many places where one can shop for nice quality furnishings in Penang. The seed was planted but grew quite quickly as we decided within the year to start this business. So thank you, E&O!

Q: Do either of you have prior experience in retail?Christian has retail experience as far back as 1987 and been involved in the operations and sourcing of products in more than 30 countries...And I have been in the service industry. Together it’s a winning combination, we hope!

Our aim is to offer great service and good quality products. We are happy to be of service to our customers and instead of following ‘the cafe in retail store’ trend, we decided to offer complimentary beverages as we do like to treat our customers the same as our guests at home.

Q: How did you come by the name, 5.4°N?We have a chalkboard wall feature in the dining nook at home and

Christian was in charge of writing a welcome message – he looked up the latitude of Penang and wrote ‘Welcome to 5.4º North’ and we liked the way it sounded and decided if we started a business in Penang this will be the name!

Q: Do you design any of the merchandise yourself? Or have them made to your specifications?Ours is a home décor, lifestyle and gift store. We have an eclectic mix of products from jewelry to furniture.

We have our own line of organic/naturally derived skincare for the whole family which is specially produced in Canada. We also have our own line of LED candles – wax body and built in timer, which serves well both in hotels and private homes as there are no

wax drips, safe with children and animals and the auto timer saves you the hassle of physically turning the candles on and off, this is our bestseller at the moment! We are also working on other products that will appeal to Penangites.

Our aim is to bring in products that are not available in Malaysia. Most of our merchandise is exclusive to us and sourced from all over the world, glassware from Poland and Portugal, tableware from Germany, wall decor from the US and other items from China, India, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia.

Q: How has the response been so far?The response has been FANTASTIC! Everyone who walks in loves our store, a 1930s shoplot. We have over 4.6K likes in our Facebook

We’ve also had requests from customers in the US for some of our products. We are extremely grateful for all the positive feedback and do take any criticism seriously as we’d like to grow and learn.
