The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma held its annual commemorative Trail of Tears Walk May 19 at Tushka Homma. “It’s a humbling experience knowing the Choctaws were the first to be removed from their
homeland, the first to walk the Trail of Tears,” said Chief Gregory E. Pyle. Said Assistant Chief Gary Batton, “We honor our ancestors’ perseverance by coming together each year to walk in unity.”
13
With those words, Chickasaw Nation Governor Bill Anoatubby (below) declared the inaugural Jim Thorpe Native American Games open at a ceremony at Remington Park. Over 2,000 athletes from throughout
Indian Country took part in a week of competition throughout OKC. Other tribal leaders in attendance were Muscogee (Creek) Nation Principal Chief George Tiger, Citizen Potawatomi Nation Chairman John “Rocky” Barrett, Seminole Nation Principal Chief Leonard Harjo and Pawnee Nation President Marshall Gover.
