PRINCESS CRUISES COVERS ALASKA IN 2017Princess Cruises continues to be a dominant player in the Alaska cruise
market by deploying 6 ships to the Land of the Last Frontier in 2017. With
113 departures offering more than 20 Land and Sea Vacation options,
guests who visit Alaska with Princess will be immersed in a culinary and
cultural experience both onboard and ashore. The Coral, Star and Island
Princess will sail the signature 7-night Voyage of the Glaciers itinerary
between Vancouver and Whittier, which can be combined with domed-rail
service, stays at Princess-owned Wilderness Lodges, and national park visits
to take guests into the heart of Alaska. Princess will also offer roundtrip
7-night scenic Inside Passage cruises from Seattle on Ruby and Emerald
Princess, and 10-night departures from San Francisco on Grand Princess.
Every Princess cruise will also include a glacier viewing at either UNESCO-
listed Glacier Bay National Park, Hubbard Glacier or College Fjord.
2017 IS THE YEAR TO SEE IRELANDMake next year’s resolution now - visit the Emerald Isle with Globus in 2017.
With 9 extensive tours rated Steady, On the Go and Active Pace, there is no
shortage of choice. For first timers who may not have a lot of time, try the
7-day Introduction to Ireland, covering the must-sees of Dublin, Ennis,
Killarney, and Waterford. A longer, 10-day Emerald Isle itinerary adds
additional religious sites of Knock, Kylemore, the Aran Islands & Foyne. Both
tours depart roundtrip from Dublin. For those who want to circumnavigate
the island, take the 13-day Scenic Ireland tour roundtrip from Limerick,
which also includes Belfast, Boyne Valley and Kilkenny. Globus also offers
tours that combine Ireland with England, Scotland and Wales for up to 25
days of in-depth discovery. All Globus tours include city-center hotels,
expert local guides, front-of-the-line access to attractions, and balanced
leisure time. With over 85 years of experience in the touring business, you’re
in good hands with Globus.
CELEBRITY EXPANDS IN GALÁPAGOS ISLANDS Celebrity Cruises has acquired award-winning Galápagos Islands tour
operator Ocean Adventures and its two ships, the 48-guest ship M/V Eclipse
and the 16-guest catamaran M/C Athala II which will join the 100-guest
Celebrity Xpedition. The expanded line-up means travelers looking to
experience the Galápagos Islands will be able to choose a ship whose size
and intimacy suits their personal preference. In January 2017 the ships will
be dry-docked and refreshed, and will emerge ready to offer guests
Celebrity’s signature modern luxury elements. “Our unique Galápagos fleet
will offer an up-close look at the region’s breathtaking natural beauty,
paired with Celebrity’s highly intuitive service and award-winning cuisine,”
said Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, President & CEO, Celebrity Cruises. The new ships also
make possible distinctive itineraries that feature an expanded list of
destinations for Celebrity such as Puerto Villamil, Darwin Bay, Black Turtle
Cove, Chinese Hat Islet and Wall of Tears.

ON DECKON DECK
AMAWATERWAYS CONNECTS WITH FAMILIESIn Spring of this year, we saw the debut of AmaWaterways’
AmaViola and sister ship AmaStella, both innovative 158-guest
river ships designed to cater to groups and multi-generational
cruisers. Their innovative connecting staterooms are designed
to offer togetherness as well as privacy – a perfect combination
for colleagues, friends and families traveling together. Six sets of
adjoining staterooms, connected via an internal doorway, can
accommodate families of five while four other suites with
convertible sofa-beds are perfect for families of four.
Perhaps most exciting for families, AmaWaterways has
entered into a new collaboration with Adventures by Disney.
Several of the AmaWaterways’ 2017 itineraries on the Rhine and
Danube including a Christmas market cruise will feature a family
theme, including memorable experiences in eight destinations
across four countries – Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary.
Onboard activities include family karaoke, movie nights for
Junior Adventurers, a magic show, cooking classes, games,
piano music and other exciting entertainment geared towards
guests of all ages.
NORWEGIAN HAS THE EDGE An innovative program from Norwegian Cruise Line will invest $400 million over the
next two years in what they are calling the Norwegian Edge and will include a full fleet
refurbishment, a new culinary program and enhancements to two premier private
island destinations. Enhancing the guest experience, the refurbishment will include
complete restaurant makeovers, a fresh new look in public spaces, interactive digital
signage and wayfinding technology, new teak flooring throughout outdoor spaces
and upgrades to The Haven Courtyard and Sundeck on the cruise lines’ older vessels.
The fleet will now offer upgraded complimentary restaurant menus and the addition
of optional à la carte priced items in the main dining rooms. Norwegian will also be
expanding fleet-wide, the new specialty dining menus that debuted on Norwegian
Escape. The Norwegian Dawn was the first ship to undergo this transformation and
emerged earlier this year after receiving the Edge treatment. And there are further
plans for the line’s privately-owned destinations including the development of the
Caribbean’s premier resort-style experience at Harvest Caye launching this November
in Belize as well as on-going new features being added to the line’s private Bahamian
island, Great Stirrup Cay.
INTRODUCING WORLD’S LARGEST MEGA-YACHTRaising the bar yet again, Crystal Cruises announces the world’s first purpose-built
polar class mega-yacht, Crystal Endeavor, which will debut in August 2018. Measuring
183 metres long, the 25,000 gross ton new build with 100-guest suites will be the
largest mega-yacht afloat. She will be the first purpose-built Polar Code compliant
yacht and will be fitted with state-of-the-art offshore dynamic positioning technology
which will enable her to float atop coral reefs and other underwater wonders without
utilizing anchors. Crystal Endeavor will cruise in the Artic; then follow the route of
migrating whales along the coast of the Americas and Europe to Antarctica, visiting
remote islands which cruise ships seldom call upon or can access. The 200-guest
capacity Crystal Endeavor will offer extreme adventures by air, sea and land with a
complete range of “toys” including two helicopters and two landing pads for
flightseeing expeditions, as well as two, seven person submarines, eight electric
amphibious zodiacs, jet skis, wave runners, kayaks, fishing facilities, paddle boards,
snorkelling and scuba equipment. And if that’s not enough, she will be equipped with
SEABOBs – the world’s most technically advanced and powerful underwater scooter.

VIKING SAILS MORE OCEANS IN 2017With the christening earlier this year of the Viking Sea, Viking
Ocean Cruises has plans to keep growing and expanding its
itineraries and fleet. Ten new itineraries are being offered for
2017 and 2018 sailings, adding more than 30 ports of call to
Viking’s portfolio, with the new itineraries exploring intriguing
and unique destinations throughout Europe, the Americas and
the Caribbean, including Cuba. Plus two new ships will be
coming in 2017, first the Viking Sky in the Spring, followed by the
Viking Sun later in the year, with a fifth and sixth ship coming in
2018 and 2020 respectively. “Our guests are experienced
travelers who are curious about the great art, history and
cultures of the world, which is why we design our ships and
itineraries to help immerse them in the destinations they visit,”
said Torstein Hagen, Chairman of Viking Cruises. Also recently
announced, the cruise line’s first-ever world cruise, on the Viking
Sun, in December 2017, spanning 141-days and visiting five
continents, 35 countries and 66 ports. Sailing from Miami to
London, this epic Viking journey will explore the world’s

Scenic summer panorama of the Old Town (Gamla Stan) in Stockholm, Sweden
26 | Dream Voyages Fall 2016
THE MOURNFUL CALL of the ship’s horn wakes me, not the
early-dawn alarm I’d set on my travel clock so I wouldn’t
miss a second of our sail-in to Stockholm. Leaping from
bed, grabbing my camera in one hand and my robe in the
other, I shove open our balcony curtains to capture every
moment of this morning’s four-hour scenic journey through the
world’s largest archipelago.
Instead of Sweden’s spectacular coastal scenery, a vast
wall of white shrouds us in its murky gloom, our ship’s fog horn
an eerie call through the early morning mist.
“Sailing through the islands in Stockholm is one of my
favorites,” says Captain Werner Timmers when I ask what he
considers the highlights of this 12-night Baltic Adventure
aboard Holland America Line’s sophisticated ms Eurodam.
“The Baltic always stands out for me and is one of my
favorite areas to sail, especially Stockholm’s stunning
archipelago,” says the well-traveled captain who has served on
most of the “dam” ships since his apprentice year in 1984.
The Baltic beckons me too, even with this pea-soup fog
hanging around like a wet blanket on our early morning
approach to Stockholm. From striking Scandinavian stops
like Sweden’s capital city and an overnight in spectacular
St. Petersburg, Russia, to cities like charming Tallinn, Estonia
and once-divided, now dynamic Berlin – both trapped for
years behind the Iron Curtain – all were exciting cities
I’d never experienced.
My husband and I are still fairly new to cruising, and
exploring the Baltic. Our twelve-night voyage begins in
Copenhagen, Denmark, the gateway to the Baltic, and we sail
away from this gracious gabled city under the wistful watch of
the iconic Little Mermaid statue. All the ports on this cruise offer
a different taste of unique European culture, some famous and
others still a special travel secret for many of us. A day trip to
Germany’s vibrant capital city of Berlin is the excursion of choice
when we dock at the quaint seaside town of Warnemunde
while Estonia’s captivating walled city of Tallinn surprises with a
fairy-tale thicket of turrets, spires, and red rooftops rubbing
shoulders with glass skyscrapers and shiny shopping malls.

St. Petersburg is simply stunning.
Even my wild imagination can’t compare
with the jaw-dropping grandeur of
Russia’s timeless imperial capital.
I’ve often pictured myself right here
in the City of the Tsars, back in the 18th
century glory days of Catherine and Peter
the Great. I’d have lived in the Winter
Palace and helped my good friend
Catherine collect some of the stunning
pieces of art that began the State
Hermitage – one of the five largest
museums in the world. The Easter-egg
domes and mosaic masterpieces of the
Church of the Spilled Blood would have
been my backyard and I’d have whiled
away the eternal twilight of Russia’s
White Nights, floating along the lovely
labyrinth of rivers and canals that
Peter the Great envisioned, turning this
once desolate swampland into the
“Venice of the North”.
Still, here I am in real life, standing
on the eastern tip of Vasilyevsky Island
where the Neva River flows through the
historic heart of this iconic city. The
birthplace of St. Petersburg at St. Peter
and Paul’s Fortress stands sentinel across
the river to my left. The gleaming spire of
Stockholm’s stunning archipelago.Below:Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, St. Petersburg.

Center, learning how to prepare Beef
Stroganoff and Deviled Eggs with Caviar.
Holland America is known for this kind
of attention to the culinary arts,
both with its show kitchens and its
variety of dining venues.
Canaletto is a family-style Italian
dining option, the Asian-fusion Tamarind
our personal favorite, and the
Cellarmaster’s Dinner at the Pinnacle Grill
is one of the finest meals and wine
pairings we’ve ever had.
“Learning about wine should be
fun and not pretentious,” says Cellar
Master and fellow-Canadian Tony Irace.
“My father always said he would rather
eat dinner without a fork than without
wine,” says the engaging Sommelier,
talking us through each delicious course
and its perfectly paired wine in Eurodam’s
signature fine dining venue.
After the foggy early morning
approach offered by Mother Nature, the
ms Eurodam docks in Sweden’s sunny
capital, offering two whole days to
explore this colorful cosmopolitan city
with the medieval heart and hopefully to
discover some of Stockholm’s local
secrets too.
A favorite turns out to be having a
fika in charming old town Gamla Stan.
The Swedes have been doing it for
over a century and even have their own
word for this local tradition. “To fika”
means enjoying a beverage with a tasty
baked treat in a neighborhood bakery
or cozy café.
Local ferries take us almost
everywhere we want to go in this city of
islands, and we often hop off and on in a
hustle of daily commuters. We rub
shoulders with workers on their
lunch break inside a popular local food
hall to sample traditional Swedish
husmanskost favorites like smoked
reindeer heart, cured salmon and
scrumptious, slippery Belon oysters from
the West Coast of Sweden.
Stockholm’s street markets and cafés are not to be missed.
the Admiralty, opulent St. Isaac’s
Cathedral and world-famous Hermitage
are to my right. No matter what
direction I turn, there’s a perfectly framed
view of something spectacular in this
“come and explore me” melting pot of
old Russian traditions and contemporary
European ambitions.
Even the subway stations are
stunning. St. Petersburg’s Metro Stations
were designed to be “palaces to the
people”, lined with artwork, amazing
mosaics and statues peering out amidst
the marble columns. While we stop to
admire the palatial elegance of
Zvenigorodskaya Station, stern-faced
locals push past, seemingly oblivious to
their striking subterranean surroundings
in the rush of everyday city life.
After spending two tantalizing days
dipping my toes into surprising
St. Petersburg, I’m already plotting my
return to this dazzling living museum.
I could have spent days in just the
Hermitage alone but a Baltic cruise
allows the perfect first visit to this
beautiful bucket-list destination. Cruise
ship guests staying less than 72 hours
and on accredited tours, don’t need a
Russian visa and many cruise lines offer
an extensive three-page list of shore
excursions – day tours filled with
sightseeing and shopping and
breathtaking evening experiences like
world-class Russian ballet.

Clockwise from far left:Exterior of the spectacular Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, RussiaThe Vasa: the ship sank on her maiden voyage in 1628. Salvaged in the 1960’s, she is now among Sweden’s biggest attractions. The famed Mariinski (Kirov) Ballet in St. Petersburg. The winding streets of medieval Stockholm.
Thanks to a tip from a friendly
young Swede, we catch the sun kissing
Stockholm goodnight from the cliffside
Fjällgatan’s Kaffestuga café in the lofty,
trendy Södermalm district.
There is a wide range of shore
excursions offered by cruise lines,
everything from exploring Stockholm’s
diverse districts by boat, bike, and even
a rooftop walk, to amazing museums for
ABBA-lovers or history-buffs, including
our top pick a visit to the famed Vasa
Museum, the most visited museum
in Scandinavia. Here we viewed the
stunning Swedish battleship The Vasa,
which was salvaged after three centuries
on the ocean floor, with an amazing more
than 95 percent of the ship still intact,
making it the world’s only preserved 17th
century ship. We enjoyed a walking tour
through the historic Old Town which
included an inside visit to the stunning
Royal Palace.
It’s hard to say goodbye to this
lively and livable Swedish city but sailing
out of Stockholm is everything Captain
Timmers promises. Locals give us friendly

homes and cottages as we cruise
through the photogenic archipelago
on its return voyage to the storybook
city of Copenhagen. n

The Glories of the Ancient World from the Comfort of a Modern Cruise Ship
WALLACE IMMEN
MediterraneanClassic
Dream Voyages Fall 2016 | 33
GROOVES WORN INTO THE ROAD BY CART WHEELS centuries ago lead
to a village well that’s still the place to gather and gossip inside the walled
city of Rhodes.
Nowhere is the sweep of thousands of years of history as clearly visible as in the
ports along the Adriatic coast and the Aegean islands of the Mediterranean. The
wardrobes may have changed, but the daily routines and even the cobble stones in the
streets of the ports of Rhodes and other cities in Eastern Mediterranean have remained
the same.
And the best way to experience the scope of antiquity is to use a modern cruise
ship as your floating home.
When we think of the Mediterranean we tend to think of the western part of the
sea that the Romans called their lake. But even older and every bit as fascinating cities
are the Eastern Mediterranean ports, where not only the Romans but the Greeks,
Crusaders, Venetians and Ottomans have left lasting marks. They’ve stood the tests of
time because they were built of stone to fend off outside influences, which led them
to retain unique styles and cultures.
The experience begins or ends in Venice, where for most cruises the itinerary
includes a day for exploration of the serene city before sailing out or disembarking.
Ships in port provide water taxi service to docks near the iconic St. Mark’s Square.
And sailing past this jewel box of a city is unforgettable, with its rich palazzos and
gorgeous squares that look today very much as they did when sailors ventured forth
during the Renaissance.
Few travelers today are aware that Venice was able to call much of the eastern
Mediterranean its domain from the twelfth to the sixteenth century. Trade and a
mighty fleet made the tiny city able to rule the Dalmatian coast and the islands of the
former Byzantine Empire.

Their influence on architecture and
art is visible everywhere, even in cities
that held out against Venice. Dubrovnik,
which was a rival of Venice as part of the
Anconian alliance, built imposing walls
around itself. They’ve proved useful even
recently, as attested to by the scars still
left in the massive fortifications by cruise
missiles during the Serbian war of the
1990s. The city has risen marvelously
from that destruction and today its
gleaming marble streets are a haven for
artists and musicians and refined cafés.
Most cruises from Venice call on
Dubrovnik and several lines, including
Holland America Line, Norwegian Cruise
Line and Oceania Cruises offer exotic day
trips into the Croatian countryside for
gourmet experiences.

Another Croatian port growing
increasingly popular on cruise routes is
Hvar, which was long a rival to Dubrovnik.
It’s on itineraries of Silversea Cruises and
Windstar Cruises. The vibrant port that
was a stronghold of the Venetians is
known as the “sunniest place in Europe,”
So naturally sunbathing is a favorite
pastime here, especially at the beaches
of Dubovica and the Pakleni Islands.
There are plenty more jaw-dropping
sights to be seen along the way: lush
olive groves, fruit orchards, fields of
lavender, and many vineyards that make
Hvar one of the top winemaking regions
in Croatia.
Want to go more in-depth in the
Adriatic? Azamara Club Cruises’ offers
specialized “inner passage” journeys
focusing on the lesser known ports. In
addition to Dubrovnik, there’s Korcula,
with a history that goes back to the
Trojans, and the ancient Roman and
Venetian city of Zadar, the oldest
settlement in Croatia, along with
medieval Koper in Slovenia and Kotor, in
Montenegro. Sailing in to Kotor along a
beautiful fjord dotted with small islands
is a treat unto itself, never mind what you
find when you arrive.
Celebrity Cruises also offers a
unique 13-night loop of the ancient
trade route from Athens west to Corfu,
which was another important outpost of
the Venetians with intensive visits to
ports in the Adriatic before heading back
to the Greek Isles of Santorini, Rhodes
and Mykonos.
Been there, seen that? For seasoned
Mediterranean sailors there are truly out
of the ordinary itineraries such as
Seabourn Cruises’ sailings from Venice
that include “where’s that?” ports such
as Primosten, a fortified Croatian hill
town whose vineyards and beaches are
considered some of the most beautiful
and unspoiled in Europe. There’s also
Nydri on the Greek island of Lefkada
that’s believed to be the Ithaca described

by Homer, where the palace of Odysseus
was located. Another highlight of
Seabourn’s route is the fortified Byzantine
and Venetian town of Monemvasia in the
Greek islands.
Silversea Cruises is also offering an
intensive cruise itinerary from Venice that
includes the Croatian seaport of Rijeka,
which has a unique Celtic history that
was described by Pliny the Elder during
the reign of Julius Caesar. It also calls at
Kavala, the Macedonian city that became
a battleground when it was besieged by
the Spartans during the Peloponnesian
War in 411 B.C.
And for a comprehensive sweep
of Mediterranean history, Cunard
Line’s Queen Victoria offers itineraries
through the Adriatic and Greek Islands
that extend as long as 21 days, from
Rome to Athens.
Many of the eastern Mediterranean
itineraries include Crete, the most
ancient civilization of all, where the
ruins of Knossos attest to the fact the
Minoans had a flourishing empire around
the Aegean nearly 6,000 years ago.
My stop at Heraklion on Crete was
aboard a Holland America cruise and it’s
also a highlight of Mediterranean
itineraries of Cunard, Princess Cruises,
and Royal Caribbean.
We’ve all heard fables of the
Minotaur, a half-man, half-bull, who
guarded treasure on Crete. It’s a treat to
find out that there may actually have
been a place that fits the description in
Homer’s tale of the labyrinth where the
beast supposedly lived.
One of my favorite ports is still the
old town of Rhodes, whose crenulated
castle walls with parapets and slits for
shooting arrows at invaders were built in
the fourteenth century, when the
Knights of the Hospital of St. John of
Jerusalem made this Greek island their
stronghold in the Crusades. The
Crusaders might still recognize the
beautifully twisting streets where there
are fresh fish on ice at every taverna and
local delicacies including grilled calamari
drizzled in olive oil on the menus. Rhodes
is on many itineraries of Azamara,
Seabourn, Silversea, Celebrity, Princess
Cruises and Windstar Cruises.
My cruise ends, as many do, in
Athens with a drink of grappa on the
Plaka, the ancient marketplace on the
slopes of the Acropolis. My voyage has
taken me on the route of the Argonauts,
the Roman galleys, and the merchants of
Venice. The ancient world is still a glorious
place, and what better way to see it than
aboard a modern cruise ship? n

LIZ FLEMING
of extraordinary travel in Myanmar, French Polynesia, Antarctica, Machu Picchu and Iceland
No matter how many times we’ve packed our suitcases, bought our tickets and made our painstaking plans, real travelers never lose that Christmas morning
excitement that arrives with the beginning of a new adventure. What makes it all the more fun is the idea of seeing something new, something our friends haven’t yet seen, and something out of the ordinary. If you have a burning passion for travel, then likely you’re always thirsty for the new, the adventurous and the authentic.
Avid adventures ourselves, we’ve carefully created this exclusive lineup of some of the world’s most authentic and fascinating travel opportunities. Whether you’re keen to discover the ancient secrets of Myanmar, dying to hike the Inca Trail to uncover the mysteries of Machu Picchu, keen to sail the beautiful islands of French Polynesia or eager to get up close and personal with the penguins of Antarctica, you’ll find the signposts here to point you in the right direction.

UNCOVER THE ANCIENT SECRETS OF MYANMAR
SAILING the Irrawaddy River through the exotic countryside
of Myanmar, formerly Burma, is less touring than it is time
traveling. In a country where little has changed since the
British colonial period and tourists are still a pleasant novelty,
authentic cultural experiences are everywhere. You’ll watch
fishermen balancing precariously on the same slim vessels used
by their grandfathers and find friendly villagers as eager to meet
you as you are to meet them.
Tourism is new to Myanmar so the best vantage point from
which to experience the fascinating Irrawaddy is a river cruise
ship. AmaWaterways is a great choice, as it offers luxurious
accommodations for just 56 guests on the intimate, all-suite
AmaPura. From al fresco seating areas or spacious suites with
balconies, guests gaze deeply into life on the river banks, while
savoring regional cuisine and sampling the best of the local
spirits and beers. Amongst other river lines sailing Myanmar,
Viking and Avalon lead the way.
Some of the must-sees: plan to walk the ancient city of
Bagan where you’ll see the remains of as many as 2,000 temples,
pagodas and stupas, dating from the 11th century. History will
come alive at your feet. Hike into the countryside to explore the
lost cities of Mandalay where the remains of former royal
capitals lie protected by the rolling hills. Visit the UNESCO World
Heritage Site of the Pyu Ancient Cities - Halin, Beikthano and
Sri Ksetra - three brick, walled and moated cities located in vast
irrigated landscapes in the dry zone of the Ayeyarwady
(Irrawaddy) River basin. Capture on film the famous U Bein
Bridge in Amapura, built of beautiful teak.
SAIL TO THE SOUTH POLE AND BE AMAZED BY ANTARCTICA
A DESTINATION SO REMOTE few people are ever fortunate
enough to visit, Antarctica certainly warrants a place at
the top of your travel bucket list.
Expect to invest up to 12 hours in getting to your
embarkation port, which will likely be Buenos Aires or Santiago,
and be sure to choose your cruise line carefully. Weigh the fact
that smaller ships are better able to navigate in certain areas and
may offer more opportunities for landings, against the greater
stability larger ships provide in rough seas. Some itineraries are
designed for hardcore adventurers who want to hike or plunge
into hot springs while others are geared for those who prefer
fewer challenges and more creature comforts.

most fascinating and breathtaking

preferred cruise lines to consider for an

LAVA FIELDS, glaciers, geysers,
raging waterfalls, stunning fjords,
miniature ponies, the world’s largest
natural hot tub and a landscape so thermo-
dynamic that you can bake bread in the
ground…all this and more is Iceland.
Now a popular May-September
destination for several major cruise lines
on itineraries that can also include
Norway, the Arctic, Northern Europe, the
British Isles and the Mediterranean,
Iceland offers not only a taste of life at
the top of the globe but also one of the
world’s best places for viewing the
northern lights.
The cruise ports most often
visited (and mispronounced!) include
Bildudalur, Djupivogur, Grundarfjordur,
Heimaey, Husavik and Reykjavik but
whether you arrive by ship or air, be sure
to put the wild waters of the Golden
Waterfall, the steamy power of the
Strokkur Geyser, and the ancient Viking
parliament at Thingvellir National Park, a
UNESCO World Heritage Site, on your
itinerary. Sample Icelandic lobster, lamb
and the more challenging hákari (rotted
shark meat), slather butter on a slice or

ovens heated naturally by the earth) then

EXPLORE THE LOST CITY OF THE INCAS IN MYSTICAL MACHU PICCHU
WHEN, AFTER YEARS OF
exhaust ive searching,
explorer Hiram Bingham
reached the rugged mountain top in the
Peruvian jungle the natives called Machu
Picchu, he was overcome with wonder.
At last, Bingham had found the famed
lost city of the Incas. Though more than a
century has passed, visitors to this sacred
UNESCO World Heritage site are still
struck by that same sense of wonderment
and awe. How did ancient Incans
transport stones for miles to create their
sophisticated structures, altars,
aqueducts and terraced gardens without
trucks, cranes or even mortar? How have
those structures survived the ages? And
most mysteriously, where did those
ancient Incan architects go?
If you’re a lover of history, culture
and mystery, Machu Picchu is a must-see.
As you stand on the ancient stone floors,
watching llamas idling on the terraces
below, you’ll marvel at the intricacies of
design achieved by these mysterious
ancient architects.
Begin your Peruvian adventure in
the cosmopolitan seaside city of Lima,
then travel to charming Cuzco for a
few relaxing days while you acclimatize
to the altitude before heading to
Machu Picchu.
When you’re ready to recreate
Bingham’s discovery, take the
adventurous route and hike the
challenging Inca Trail (a two to four day
excursion) or simply climb aboard a
sightseeing train that will whisk you
through the Andes Mountains to the
base of Machu Picchu. Either way, you’ll
experience the magic and majesty of the
lost city of the Incas and might just solve
some of the mysteries you’ll find there.
Both Globus Journeys and Trafalgar
Tours offer escorted tours to Machu
Picchu and a few cruise lines offer
excellent land and sea packages either
before or after your South American
cruise including Princess Cruises,
Celebrity Cruises and Oceania Cruises.

French Polynesia. While there are far
more lovely islands than we have time
to describe here and each would make
an ideal home for a week or two in
paradise, the best way to experience the
glories of Tahiti and her islands is on an
intimate cruise.

aboard a small but luxurious cruise ship,
making stops to swim with friendly
lemon sharks and stingrays off the shores
of Bora Bora, to have a fresh fish barbecue

the essence of French Polynesia’s
magical appeal.
Best cruise lines to consider are

Norwegian Breakaway at Great Stirrup Cay
Dream Voyages Fall 2016 | 45
NORWEGIAN CRUISE LINE’S GREAT STIRRUP CAY, BAHAMAS & HARVEST CAYE, BELIZE
NORWEGIAN CRUISE LINE WAS THE FIRST to pioneer the private island
experience in 1997 by introducing Great Stirrup Cay. The 250-acre island is part
of the Berry Island chain, 50 miles northwest of Nassau. A barbecue lunch is
served at the 8,500 sq. ft. beach buffet and refreshing cocktails are available from five bars.
New experiences in 2016 include a great refresh and many fabulous additions.
These include a 1,000-foot zipline, Abaco Taco bar, LandShark Bar & Grill, and an
expansive ocean-side boardwalk. A half-acre entertainment complex will keep families
busy with live music, games, and shaded picnic areas.
Also just announced for 2017 is an exclusive lagoon retreat with luxury beachfront
villas and an exclusive restaurant. Access to the lagoon retreat will be complimentary
for The Haven guests, as well as those booking treatments at the island spa.
A new island destination will also be unveiled in November 2016 - Harvest Caye
- a 75-acre oasis off the coast of Southern Belize. A 130-foot tall Flighthouse will be the
centerpiece, serving as a home base for a 3,000-foot zipline, suspension bridges and
free fall jumps. Down at sea level, with a seven-acre beach area, a 15,000 sq. ft pool, five
dining and bar venues, water sports and shopping village, guests will want for nothing.
11 luxury beach villas, each accommodating up to 10 guests with reservations, will
allow for families and groups to have their own private retreat.
Harvest Caye will also embrace Belize’s rich eco-diversity. A full conservation and
education program will be developed by award winning author and wildlife expert
Tony Garel. The program will include manatee observation tours at the lagoon, visits
to an aviary, insects and butterfly garden, and lectures will showcase the country’s
native flora and fauna. Excursions to mainland Belize to explore Mayan ruins and other
natural attractions will also be available.
natural attractions will also be available. HOLLAND AMERICA’S HALF MOON CAY, BAHAMAS
HALF MOON CAY is located 10 miles southeast of Nassau, with 50 acres of
recreation and relaxation for Holland America guests. Named after explorer
Henry Hudson’s ship, Half Moon Cay offers two miles of crescent-shaped beach
with icing-sugar sand and crystal clear, calm waters.

In line with premium cruising, the activity level is more
subdued and the pace is laid back. For those seeking privacy,
Holland America Line takes private cabanas to a new level with
the 1,620 sq. ft. Private Oasis featuring butler service, personal
chef, hot tub, wet bar, massage area and more for up to 25,
perfect for multi-generational groups.
In addition to the standard excursions and rentals, one
unique activity is the popular horseback riding by land and sea,
where guests have an opportunity to take their steeds into the
ocean for a brief swim on horseback. The full Club HAL children’s
program is brought ashore to entertain youngsters, while a
straw market, three waterfront bars and sports center provide
distractions for adults. There is even a Bahamian chapel for
weddings and vow renewals, with a capacity for 18 guests.
DISNEY CRUISE LINE’S CASTAWAY CAY, BAHAMA
ALL THINGS DISNEY come alive on Castaway Cay, just
north of Great Abaco in the Bahamas. Only 55 of the
island’s 1,000 acres have been developed, where every
detail catering to families has been thought of. No fussy
tendering is required as the ship has its own dock. Awaiting
trams whisk families to the action, and there is plenty of it.
An expansive family beach area allows for swimming and
snorkeling in gentle waters. Youngsters enjoy Scuttle’s Cove
with counsellor led activities and games. Water play areas with
names like Spring-a-Leak and Pelican Plunge are buckets of fun
for kids of all ages. And of course there are character
appearances throughout the day and even a dance party with
Lilo and Stitch. Lunch and snacks are served at Cookie’s BBQ and
everyone enjoys complimentary sodas.

ROYAL CARIBBEAN’S COCOCAY, BAHAMAS & LABADEE, HAITI
ROYAL CARIBBEAN GUESTS have a choice of two private
islands. CocoCay, also known as Little Stirrup Cay (and
adjacent to Norwegian’s Great Stirrup Cay), is less than a
mile wide, but comes loaded with amenities.
Three separate beach areas allow guests to spread out, but
most activities are fee-based. A choice of 20 activities and
excursions take guests above and below the water, be it wave
runners, parasailing, snorkeling or shallow water shore dive (for
certified divers only).
Families can enjoy the expansive Caylana Aqua Park, with
in-water trampolines and 14-foot floating castles with inflatable

is complimentary.
Guests sailing to the Caribbean also have the privilege to
enjoy Labadee. A private island that’s not an island, as Labadee
is an uninhabited peninsula on the northern coast of Haiti.
Divided into five neighborhoods, your day here offers a choice

PRINCESS CRUISES’ PRINCESS CAYS, BAHAMAS
LOCATED ON THE SOUTHERN tip of Eleuthera in the
Bahamas, Princess Cays isn’t its own island, but appears to
be, due to the narrow strip of beach on which it lies. The
half-mile beach is divided into five coves, offering separate
swimming, watersports and snorkeling areas, a perfect set
up for adults and families partaking in different activities.
A Crow’s Nest Lookout provides panoramic views while an
offshore pavilion is a good place to view colorful fish without
getting wet.
Private cabanas line the shore, sailboats, aqua bikes, kayaks
and snorkeling equipment are available for rent. Or simply kick
back on a lounge chair and enjoy cocktails and the BBQ lunch.
Kids have their own sandy playground at Pelican’s Perch, with
counsellors and supervised activities.
Because of its location, guests at Princess Cays have the
opportunity to take a scenic excursion and visit the local
communities of Rock Sound and Tarpum Bay, sampling
Bahamian culture, cuisine and entertainment. Other unique
tours include a dune buggy adventure and surf fishing off
a rocky shore.
OTHER NOTABLE PRIVATE ISLANDS
LUXURY CRUISE LINE PAUL GAUGUIN has its own piece of
paradise within paradise. Just off the coast of Taha’a in
French Polynesia, you can’t get more remote than
Motu Mahana, complete with swaying palm trees, a secluded
beach, impossibly clear waters, and all-inclusive cocktails from
the floating bar.
Geneva-based MSC Cruises will soon also be getting a
piece (actually 2) of the private island pie. The company has
announced plans to develop an island in the Bahamas 20 miles
south of Bimini, to be named Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve.
At 95 acres, it will be the largest private island in the Caribbean,
with 6 beach areas, a 2,000-seat amphitheater, restaurants and
bars, balanced with conservation efforts to highlight indigenous
plants and marine life. Across the ocean – in the Persian Gulf to
be exact – Sir Bani Yas is the name of the exclusive retreat off the
southwest coast of Abu Dhabi that will be made available to
MSC guests starting in December 2016. In addition to beaches,
a spa, lounges and family areas, the 1.5 mile oasis will also be
home to a wildlife reserve and an archeological site.
Local cuisine, shopping and excursions will offer guests a taste
of the Middle East. n

our fab five
Taste, it’s a wonderful and delectable thing. Providing numerous delicious moments, our taste and desire for good food
and libations is a part of our journey of life. And when we travel, cuisine is often at the heart of some of our most memorable
experiences. Cruise lines today continue to raise the bar in both the food arena and in their cocktail and wine choices on
board, so much so that we thought it was time to delve more deeply and find out more about their offerings.
Culinary Journeys
Ultra-luxury and award-winning cruise
line Seabourn has launched a new era in
culinary excellence.
Renowned American Chef Keller, of
Per Se and French Laundry fame has
created a series of menus which are now
being featured aboard Seabourn Quest in
a new bespoke restaurant. And soon, The
Grill by Thomas Keller will be unveiled on
the Line’s newest ship, the 600 guest
Seabourn Encore launching in late 2016
followed by a venue on sister ship,
Seabourn Ovation launching in 2018.
Seabourn Quest is the first of the
cruise company’s three current ships to
have a Keller restaurant. In addition,
menus throughout multiple dining
Seabourn partners with Chef Thomas Keller
venues on Quest, Seabourn Odyssey and
Seabourn Sojourn feature an array of
dishes ranging from first courses to
mains and desserts as well.
To introduce an unparalleled dining
experience unlike any other at sea, Chef
Keller, his veteran staff and Seabourn’s
executive culinary team have
collaborated in menu development and
training. And, in an effort to ensure a
consistent presentation, Seabourn has
even acquired Homage by Thomas Keller
in Checks pattern, the white porcelain
dinnerware by Raynaudused in Chef
Keller’s own fine dining restaurants.
A remarkable partnership sure to please
guests’ palates.

Avalon Waterways Gets Fresh
Known for its innovative and award-winning Suite Ship design,
Avalon Waterways always seeks to add new ideas, creativity and
appeal to its river ships and cruise offerings. And now they are
bringing fresh ideas to the table! Starting in 2017 the company
is teaming up with two of Europe’s rising culinary stars, the
Wrenkh brothers, to design Avalon Fresh.
Avalon is listening to its guests and their interest in eating
healthier and vegetarian food options that taste great. Having
always provided travelers with a wide selection of nutritious and
delicious recipes, Avalon Fresh is taking this idea to a whole new
level. It is about creating wholesome menu items where garden-
fresh, local ingredients from small farms are married with a
sprinkling of culinary ingenuity. This exciting collection of new food
will apparently be so mouthwatering that many guests will be
surprised at how healthy these dishes are – and all prepared with
the highest quality ingredients by the onboard culinary experts. And for guests who prefer a regular menu, Avalon delivers
here too; always with an extensive menu and offering a dinner
with specialty items from the day’s destination as well
as a choice of wine including those from the region. And on
each Avalon cruise, the company brings a local chef on
board to interact with guests while preparing a special menu.
On the company’s fabulous Suite Ships guests can also enjoy
the Panorama Bistro – a more casual atmosphere for dining,
which offers small bites and tapas-style dishes, hand-paired
with local wines.

Celebrity Cruises Tantalizes – a Fusion of Food and Film
Cornelius Gallagher, Celebrity Cruises’ associate vice president of food and beverage operations, prepares dishes for a preview of A Taste of Film.
Modern luxury cruise brand Celebrity
Cruises recently premiered its sumptuous
new sensation at sea, “A Taste of Film” on
Celebrity Summit and Celebrity Millennium.
Joining Celebrity Infinity which debuted
the new Rooftop Terrace, a chic modern
lounge with breathtaking sea views and
the setting for this new onboard
experience.
This is one of the most delicious and
indulgent ways that cruisers can enjoy
both a beautiful outdoor space as well as
a rich cultural and culinary moment,
along with stunning views of the sea. And
what more could one ask! A Taste of Film,
a new multi-sensory experience presents
films that evoke a specific cultural,
culinary or destination offering paired
with cuisine that brings the scenes on the
screen to life through guests’ taste buds.
Celebrity’s first film was “The
Hundred-Foot Journey” which tells the
story of a feud between two adjacent
restaurants in a small French town: one
operated by a recently relocated Indian
family and the other a Micheline-starred
French restaurant. The cruise line’s
culinary team, led by Michelin-starred
Cornelius Gallagher, has specially crafted
a multi-course tasting menu inspired by
the award-winning film’s French and
Indian cuisines, which guests can enjoy
throughout the film. A great way to
showcase Celebrity’s fine dining choices.
