The Neighbourhood Planning Group have now written the preliminary draft plan. The next of our series of features on members of the local community: Let’s spend 30 minutes with…

Steve Sharrock “As you are more than likely aware, I run the village pub along with Denice, with great help from our staff and sometimes even our children! I’m also a big runner, after starting at Half Marathons and Marathons, I moved up to running Ultra Marathons. My first being around the Isle of Wight, I’ve since completed a number of other Ultra Marathons and am still planning more! Thank you very much to everyone who sponsored me for the recent (rather hot!) London Marathon where I was able to raise £1200 for the Children’s Critical Care unit at the JR.” 1. How long have you lived in Drayton Parslow? 12 ½ years now, it’s amazing how quickly the time has gone by as it certainly doesn’t feel that long. Every year in the village seems to get more enjoyable. 2. What do you like best about living in Drayton Parslow? It’s really nice being able to live in a small village, but still have the convenience of Milton Keynes so close. Everything you need is at your fingertips but at the same time it’s removed from daily life. It’s also great for running as there is a good variety of places to go, I spend half my time on the road waving at people as they go past! 3. What is your favourite event held in the village? That would have to be the VPA show, seeing everyone get together with all the competitions that go on and the community spirit of everyone helping out. It always seems to bring the whole village out together. 4. What is your favourite book / books? I read quite a lot of books but I don’t really have a favourite, I enjoy historical fiction and also like to read biographies. 5. Who is your favourite celebrity chef & why? Again, I do quite a lot of cooking but don’t have anyone in particular as a favourite, I have a couple of Gordon Ramsey and Jamie Oliver books that I use on a regular basis. There are always new chefs appearing so it’s nice to get a variety. 6. The film you can watch again & again? Most definitely the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, agreed it’s not a single film, but I see the three as one film in its own right. Not only do I thoroughly enjoy watching them, but they have a lot of meaning and sentiment in our family, as my son says, ‘We’ve watched them about a million times now’!

7. What is the best job you have ever had?

I’ve only really had two jobs so not a lot to choose from! It would have to be working at the Pub though, it’s very long hours and hard work, but you get to have so much fun with the customers! It is also nice providing the School dinners as you really feel like you’re doing something worthwhile for the children. 8. What is your favourite place to visit?

I think it would be Brighton, it’s such a diverse city, there is always so much going on and everyone is so friendly. I regularly run the London to Brighton race and so we sometimes get the opportunity to spend a weekend down there. 9. Who would be your special guests at a dinner? Most definitely Ranulph Fiennes, he has always been an inspiration to me in what he’s done with his exploration and quite often I’ll draw from that if I’m having a particularly tough run. I’ve met him before and he told me off for running on the roads!

Another would most likely be Guy Martin, again, he is an inspiration and a complete nutter! He has the most amazing work ethic!

Mark has been a fantastic member of our committee, and we are very grateful to him for his wise words and sage advice. We are delighted to say that Barrie Norman has stepped into the vacant role, and we welcome him on to the Committee. David Wise has recently been helping us with our maintenance, and we would like to officially thank him for all of his hard work in getting the clubhouse into a better state of repair. David’s first major project was to replace the Cricket door, which was rotten and has been updated to be a secure Fire Exit door. Thanks as ever go to the wonderful Fedoriw family for running our annual Easter Egg hunt, which was thoroughly enjoyed by the children who took part. Work on installing our Petanque court has been slightly delayed due to wet weather. We hope it will be installed and open for Petanque matches soon. We wish the Drayton Parslow Cricketers all the best for a fantastic season. The clubhouse bar should be open for all Home matches, for anyone who comes up to support the team. Traffic Calming

The Parish Council has successfully applied for funding to tackle this issue and the first stage –installation of ‘Unsuitable for HGVs’ signage at the either end of the village has been agreed with the Parish Council match funding a grant from the Local Area Forum (LAF). Other, more intensive measures have also been approved following a Traffic Calming Feasibility Study which was then presented for funding from AVDC’s New Homes Bonus. The NHB Committee reviewed the study and felt that certain measures would be beneficial and has awarded up to £80,000. These include 30mph repeater signs, flashing amber school warning signs, footway work outside the school (to include bollards), roadside kerbing to prevent further erosion and accentuate limited road width near the Church, and improved village gateways with additional road markings and speed limit signage. The Parish Council will be meeting with Transport for Bucks to further develop these plans.

Broadband

Gigaclear has advised that their work is progressing and residents can check what permits have been requested, dates granted and locations for digging via https://www.roadworks.org/ (Gigaclear wishes to keep the Parish Council informed but there is no implied recommendation from the Parish Council for any utility provider).

BT Community Fibre/Openreach is also assessing options for superfast broadband provision to the village but at time of writing we have not heard any definite proposals.

Allotments

We still have four vacant allotments available. Rent is incredibly cheap – well under £1 per month, so why not grow your own this year? Contact the Clerk for details. [email protected]

News from 40 years ago…

Following on from the ’30 years of Drayton Parslow Village News…’ feature in the previous edition here is some news from 40 years ago!

We are grateful to David Wise of New Road who shared the cuttings on the next page with the DPVN.

From the Daily Mail in 1978, they feature news about Drayton Parslow villagers rallying to save the school which was under threat of closure.

David’s son Simon is in the picture with the Headteacher and the classroom of children unfortunately he couldn’t remember any other children’s names! Please let us know if you can.

Had this campaign not been a success many of our readers and their children would not have had the benefit of this excellent school.

Sorry for the poor quality of the images but whilst we appreciate you can't read it word for word there will hopefully be a few in the village who can remember this actually happening!

Your Garden in June Gardening Advice from Gill Gallon, Potash Nursery www.potashplants.co.uk

June 21 is the longest day of the year, and the extra light and warmth encourages the garden to put on an extra burst of growth. It can be a variable month, with chilly nights and rain, but the chances of frost are slim and the garden may never look better; regular upkeep will ensure a long summer of interest. Jobs for the garden • Hoe borders regularly to keep down the weeds • Position summer hanging baskets and containers outside. Make sure they are well watered

preferably using collected rainwater or recycled grey water whenever possible. • Mow the lawn weekly and apply a selective weed-killer which kill weeds but not the lawn. Be

careful if you have wild flowers growing in it as it may mistake them for weeds. • Plant out summer bedding and fill gaps in borders with annuals • Stake tall or floppy plants. Sweet peas can be trained onto their support to create a good display • Prune spring-flowering shrubs and cut back/clean and divide spring flowering perennials • Check roses for mildew, aphid, black-spot or other insect or disease problems and if they

appear, take steps to control them straight away • Harvest lettuce, radish, other salads and early potatoes. Earth up the rest and promptly plant

any potatoes still remaining. • Pinch out side shoots on tomatoes and tie in as required • Shade greenhouses to keep them cool and prevent scorch

Topical Tips – Annuals

These are the plants that give masses of colour to your garden for just one season. You can grow them each year from seed, usually starting in a greenhouse or coldframe or get them ready to plant straight into the garden.

The professional growers have then take care of the sowing, pricking out and feeding for you with a result of a nicely branched plant,

blooming and ready to put in the garden.

Annuals are very versatile, they can be planted in containers and hanging baskets, mixed with your shrubs and perennials to fill gaps and give extra colour or can even be used to change the look of your garden from year to year.

Cosmos, antirrhinum and sun flowers all add height, sweet peas and morning glory love to climb while geraniums, petunias, impatiens and pinks give colour at the front.

Most annuals will flower all season long, until cold temperatures or frost put an end to their display.

CRICKET REPORT

The cricket season had yet to get underway at the end of April as the high rainfall/snow meant that the ground was still not fit to play on but hopefully the month of May will see some home games. The Saturday side remains in division 5 of the Morrant Four Counties League and the fixtures together with the Sunday friendlies are shown. For the league fixtures we have a number of games against other local villages namely Great Horwood, Great Brickhill and Wing. The highlights of the Sunday fixtures are the twenty-twenty tournaments on July 22 at Mursley and the second one at Stoke Hammond on August 26. The sports and social club bar will normally be open during home games and certainly by the evening. So please come up for a drink and watch. If you are interested in playing please introduce yourself to one of our players or contact myself or Barrie by e-mail. The league cricket is inevitably more serious and if you are interested in playing you might prefer the more relaxed atmosphere of Sunday cricket. Special thanks are due to the sports and social club which is sponsoring our cricket balls for this season. And a big thank you is also due to the strenuous efforts of Roger Willis and his team in preparing the wicket and mowing the outfield under difficult conditions. Thank you to everyone that has been dropping off their cardboard boxes @ 52 Main Road. They are

proving very useful for posting items so please keep them coming.

The majority of what we send are small parcels so

the boxes need to be no bigger than; Length 45cm x Width 35cm x Depth 16cm, however the larger

boxes are also good for posting the occasional funny shaped items we sell!

Church Mousefest 2018

We are delighted to say that our Mousefest (probably the first ever to be held) has been a huge success! It was over two years ago that the idea of a Mousefest was dreamt up. After much planning, knitting and stitching by a group of ladies in the village we were finally ready for weekend of April 14th and 15th.

There were a few complications with the staging; some mice had ‘attitude’ and played up! As the circus mice were being staged, one clown in particular threw himself off the pulpit and fell down a small hole in the floorboards. Although visible, he could not be reached. In the end outside help arrived in the form of a mobility aid grabber which hauled him to safety. After a good dusting down from centuries of dust and cobwebs, he was able to perform for us.

We had a lot of interest by local media, which started on the first day of the Festival with an early morning interview on BBC 3 Counties radio. Photographers also came on the Saturday and seemed to take hundreds of pictures, some of which were prominently displayed in the Bucks Herald (please click on the link in the electronic version of the VN) At times we were quite overwhelmed by the numbers who came to view, and even more so by the fact that so many people wanted to buy the mice. Furthermore, our mice are going far; we can confirm that two choir boys have gone to Scotland, Elvis mouse has already relocated to Egypt and some school mice and their teacher are getting ready to emigrate to Australia! To date we have raised approximately £1800 some of which will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Society. We continue to receive fresh orders for mice and we are also planning to produce a ‘Church Mouse Calendar’ for 2019. So many people said they loved the displays and it was a pleasure to hold an event which made so many people smile.

Thank you to

everyone who helped with the Festival and for all who came and gave their support.
